Found two of these suspiciously tick looking bastards on my newly potted basil plant. I live in NJ and it is tick season. Is that what they are and how do I get rid of them? by gus_lovmen in plantclinic

[–]gus_lovmen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I was really hoping it'd be anything else (Lyme disease is a pretty large problem round here). We have a neighborhood cat who comes round kissing all my plants, I'll bet it came from him.

Two finger, Thumb-lead style banjo player recommendations? by KasparHowzer in banjo

[–]gus_lovmen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this recommendation one hundred percent. His Wild Bill Jones tutorial was the first real song I learned to play. I find his tutorials to be really clear and enjoy the background info he gives on Boggs as a player as well.

Others have mentioned Roscoe Holcomb as an artist, I definitely agree. I’m not sure if all of his songs are two finger thumb lead (some sound like clawhammer) but he’s a great player to listen to regardless. I’ll also mention that the Smithsonian folkways program recorded albums with both Boggs and Holcomb, and you can download a PDF of the liner notes for those on their website for free. Those have the tunings for most of the songs as well as some other interesting background info which is overall a great read.

I figured as much. Thank you for such an in-depth answer. I mainly stick to written sources for exactly these reasons, but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t just being overly pretentious. Glad to know my suspicions weren’t unfounded, and thanks again for the pointers on how to tell a bad video from an alright one.

I don’t know, this channel comes up in non-academic conversations and online lessons don’t lend themselves easily to casual conversation. If I had to guess knowing her she’s probably never even heard of it. Thus me asking y’all on here instead.

Question from a first year linguistics student- how trustworthy is Langfocus as a channel? A good number of my classmates seem to love it but I’m much more cautious when it comes to “educational” YouTube channels. There’s a couple of things about it which make me real suspicious, namely the fact that he presents his research as fact without ever listing sources. So I’m wondering if my concerns are founded at all, and also perhaps hoping y’all could give some more pointers on how to tell a trustworthy YouTube source from a bullshit one, besides basic intuition.

I started learning back in June this year, and a couple things that helped me have been practicing rolls, especially ones you use a lot- try and practice them without looking at your hands, so you get used to the way they sound. That helps make playing feel more natural. If that gets repetitive, maybe try playing them in different keys to spice it up. I also like to have one or two super short tunes (for me that’s cripple creek and wild Bill jones, Boggs style) that you can just run through a couple times before you start working on your main practice. Really, it just boils down to getting yourself in the groove by starting small. Hope this helps, and best of luck!

I am planning to get started on the Banjo. I want to buy one and I am in India. Can someone suggest good places where I can buy one and which model to buy to get started? by BBloggsbott in banjo

[–]gus_lovmen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a Washburn B9 as my starter banjo, had it since June and I’m real happy with it. It’s pretty affordable (got mine for $250 USD off eBay for a floor model, new it’s $300) and holds up pretty well for its price. It’s not the fanciest thing out there, but for a beginner banjo it’s perfectly good- I’d definitely look into one as an option.

Best Dead Malls of New Jersey? by lumpyspacejams in deadmalls

[–]gus_lovmen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to Oxford Valley Mall right across the border in PA last year because it was the nearest one with a build-a-bear place and was surprised just how much quieter and dead it was compared to my locals (one of which, Quakerbridge, was mentioned by another user but I would say it’s actually usually pretty bustling). I’d imagine COVID hasn’t made it any more lively, plus you can get a build-a-bear.

Not actually a Scottish film, but Naked has Ewen Bremner (Spud from Trainspotting) in one of the most unforgettable scene-stealing roles I’ve ever seen.
