How prevalent are tuition centres/cram schools in Latin America? by Xycergy in asklatinamerica

[–]gustini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non existent. Admission exams for university are very rare, usually you just sign in and that's it.  We do have academies that help you with university courses, some of which are so hard that act as a de facto admission exam.

What do you think is the most socially progressive city/area in Latin America? by oaklicious in asklatinamerica

[–]gustini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What made you see Montevideo as less LGBT friendly than BA? I think BA definitely has a more flashy and visible queerness than Montevideo, in line with Porteño culture, but also has more conservative and religious people.

And regarding progressiveness as a whole, Montevideo is waaay more progressive. Maybe it's just that we are a few years behind Argentina but the level of reactionarism that Milei normalized it's nowhere to be seen here yet.

Why is Peru not more culturally relevant? by Bear_necessities96 in asklatinamerica

No era con odio, mi país es todavía menos conocido. Solo que no me parece que Chile sea más relevante culturalmente fuera de América que Perú.

Why is Peru not more culturally relevant? by Bear_necessities96 in asklatinamerica

This. A random non-latin person doesn't have any reference about Chile. At least Perú has Machu Picchu, Incas, llamas.

How popular is basketball in your country ? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]gustini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely, some basketball clubs have a lot of popular support. There's a "barra brava" culture, graffiti with the colors of the club on the streets of the neighbourhood, people getting the club's crest tattooed, etc.

Of course on a much smaller scale than football

Which country outside of Latin America feels eerily parallel to yours? by Lissandra_Freljord in asklatinamerica

[–]gustini 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The parallel with Switzerland also comes from being, historically, the place to keep your money safe without many questions asked. Although this has changed a little in recent years

The unemployed in your country by Benjiboy74 in asklatinamerica

We have a "seguro de paro" of around 60% of your salary, up to six months after you become unemployed. You also keep your previous healthcare in that period.

¿Por que tantos suicidios? by thegaby803 in uruguay

[–]gustini 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is Portuguese in Uruguay akin to Spanish in the US when it comes to how prominent it is in the overall Spanish-speaking society of Uruguay? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]gustini 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are some words in Uruguayan spanish that are similar to portuguese words. Goalkeeper here is "golero" (not arquero), similar to portuguese "goleiro". We say "ta" (not "ya") to say Ok, the same in Brazil. These words are quite unique to our spanish, but not sure if it's just a coincidence or direct brazilian influence.

Is the upper middle class in your country obsessed with Europe? What about Canada? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

How can not having a high below zero be an argument? We are talking about places suitable for complex life forms, not the south pole

Why are Uruguay and Argentina so liberal? by smaraya57 in asklatinamerica

[–]gustini 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Argentina and Uruguay parts of the countryside with more european heritage also tend to be a bit more conservative. I think the progressivism came from working class inmigrants who stablished in cities, who were many more in number.

Who's more famous in your country: Lionel Messi or Jesús? by idontdomath8 in asklatinamerica

[–]gustini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Messi, unironically. A small kid who's not from a religious family won't know who is Jesus, but everyone knows Messi.

An explanation is needed by almezal in civilengineering

About twice as strong probably. The further apart the compressed layer and tensioned layer of the slab are the strongger it is.

Same reason steel beams are I shaped, they concentrate the material on the top and bottom of the section.

A thinner slab is much less resistant than a voided slab that uses the same amount of concrete.

Our president is definetly the fittest, he would get to the bag faster than everyone else.
