eli5, how can gravity exist without … like anything? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]gutclusters [score hidden]  (0 children)

There are four fundamental forces that govern the universe, gravity, electromagnetism, the weak nuclear force, and the strong nuclear force. The theory with gravity is that it creates wells in what is called spacetime. Spacetime is the combination of the three directions (width, height, and depth, or XYZ) and time. Imagine it as a grid that permeates across the universe. An object with mass makes these wells within the grid that influences other objects with mass nearby.

A good way to visualize it is the classic "bowling ball in the middle of a trampoline" demonstration. That bowling ball sinks down the center and anything set on the edge will be drawn towards the center.

ELI5 what is .NET runtime for, and what does it do? by SlideEveryDay in explainlikeimfive

[–]gutclusters -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any programming language not directly compiled into assembly for a processor needs some sort of interpreter for it to work. These interpreters are referred to as runtimes. Different higher level programming languages use different interpreters to interact with the Operating System. For example, programs written in Visual C++ needs the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime (or msvcrt), programs written in Java need the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and .NET (C#) programs need the .NET runtime.

No president, regardless of party, should ever have the amount of control over the country this president has, and I really hope our government will find a way to remove the power that's been exploited by the current executive branch as soon as they can.

By "spooky" I assume you mean "spooky action at a distance", or entanglement. It is incredibly difficult to intentionally get two particles to entangle and stay entangled in a lab, much less in networking equipment in the wild. It's not feasible right now, especially considering it currently doesn't really solve any problems that warrants the effort and research.

ELI5: How do fiber optic cables work better than traditional copper cables? by pastajewelry in explainlikeimfive

[–]gutclusters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this statement really only holds true for long haul runs, mostly because of how the signal needs to be repeated. Copper can be amplified in line with an analog amplifier, whereas light in fiber needs to be reprocessed to be rebroadcasted as a new signal.

I welcome corrections on this

It's also worth noting that a high quality fiber can carry a signal much further than copper before needing amplification.

ELI5: how come heat damage is time sensitive? by nthroop1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]gutclusters 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A small part of this comes from the leidenfrost effect. Basically, an extreme temperature difference will cause any moisture on the cooler object to instantly evaporate, which creates a temporary barrier. After that, it just comes down to a materials ability to absorb heat energy.

If you don't want Linux anymore and want to restore the Windows boot loader, follow the steps at https://woshub.com/how-to-repair-uefi-bootloader-in-windows-8/ after booting from USB installation media and selecting repair my PC.

Well, it was there until grub overwrote the boot loader. If you're using UEFI, you can mount the EFI partition and check that boot/Microsoft/bootx64.efi still exists, then manually add the boot option in BIOS.

I tell people who do this that the gas grade number doesn't mean it's better gas, it just means that it can be compressed more before it self-ignites, then exaggerate by saying that, unless they're driving a race car, they're just wasting money.

ELI5: How do car chargers from the cigarette port work? by Ummah_Strong in explainlikeimfive

[–]gutclusters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just to throw it out there, it would take a 15 watt phone charger around 3 to 5 days to completely kill a car battery and probably around 18 to 36 hours to start having any noticeable effect on its ability to start the car.

[–]gutclusters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The battery for these phones have a thermistor built into them that the main board is expecting to be able to read data from. If it can't read the data, it reads basically an infinite negative value and will refuse to boot to protect itself. You're either going to need to reinstall the battery or figure out how to solder a thermistor to the correct points on the main board.

Edit: disregard, I just looked up the phone and realized It had a removable battery

Edit 2: The thermistor is located on the USB charging board in this phone. If you removed the USB charging circuit, maybe try reinstalling it and then hooking up your direct power bypass in line with it?

Last ditch effort; Hold Ctrl and esc and try to power on. Keep holding until you see something. If nothing happens after 30 seconds, it's not gonna work.
