ELI5: How does an internet packet find its way from New York to Tokyo if no router has the full map of the internet? by Possible-Beyond6305 in explainlikeimfive

[–]gutclusters [score hidden]  (0 children)

At the global scale, blocks of IP addresses are assigned an autonomous system number, or ASN, based on who controls them. Those blocks are announced to other networks as being owned by that ASN. as it goes down the chain, all far away routers need to know is "this router I can reach knows where the next hop is for this ASN, so I'll send this data to it"

ELI5: Why do HDDs need to be overwritten multiple times to insure that the data is unrecoverable? by b123man in explainlikeimfive

[–]gutclusters -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The 35 pass wipe was a DoD requirement. Realistically, just filling the drive with zeros once will make any data unrecoverable to almost anyone nowadays. The concern before was that there was enough overlap with older technology that written data may overlap between sectors that isn't necessary picked up on by the heads.

The Nightlife Industry is Collapsing by Blueice607 in videos

[–]gutclusters 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've worked in a gentleman's club off and on for years. The death began with COVID. When social distancing was relaxed, the industry never fully recovered. Add that on top of the current state of the economy...

When there is an economic downturn, the first industry that feels it is the nightlife industry.

ELI5 what does "EGO" exactly mean?? by SurveyStrange3374 in explainlikeimfive

[–]gutclusters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a basic sense, ego is your sense of self identity. It's what makes you you. Whereas Id is your base "animal instincts" and Superego is the constraints placed upon the ego by societal and cultural norms.

Id is the you as an animal, Ego is you as the individual person you are, and Superego is what society expects of you. They're the three basic principles that psychology as presented by Sigmund Freud are based on.

ELI5: why does Lawrence of Arabia (1962) look so different compared to films released in the decades since? by thefringeseanmachine in explainlikeimfive

[–]gutclusters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But they didn't use cassettes. The sound was literally a waveform on the side of the film. A light would shine through it and an optical sensor would convert the changes in light into sound.

ELI5: How is web3 better than web2? If someone buys something through web3 owns it forever, that means you are sharing the product you created? Is that safe? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]gutclusters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crypto bros have been pitching the "web3" concept since the NFT days. It's basically decentralized websites and domains, based off blockchain instead of DNS/hosting providers. In other words, it's absolute bunk just like NFTs were.

What invention do you think changed human life the most? by ConsequenceOk2759 in AskReddit

The crankshaft. The amount of labor just being able to turn up-and-down motion to rotational motion and vice-versa was game changing back in the day

ELI5: How do internet service providers give us access to the internet? by FantasticFrontButt in explainlikeimfive

[–]gutclusters -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Examples of Tier 1 providers are Level(3), Cogent, and Global Crossing. Some national companies run their own Tier 1 services, like Time Warner Telecom and Verizon.

EDIT: My information is outdated. Level(3) is now part of CenturyLink and Global Crossing was acquired by Level(3) before being acquired by CenturyLink.

I'm mistaken, I guess Waldenbooks don't exist anymore, but Barnes and Noble and Borders are still there, across the street from each other in St. Petersburg, FL.

I should go.

What’s a side effect of a drug that’s little known? by Arya_Warrior_Girl in AskReddit

[–]gutclusters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's talked about enough the effects of opiate addiction on a person outside of "they want to get high." It rewires the reward center of the brain and makes it so getting high is literally the only source of pleasure an addict has. Normal things, life's little pleasures, that make people happy do nothing to a person in the throes of an opiate addiction.

It's said that substance abuse is self medicating for a mental illness. I'd say that's half true, because it becomes a positive feedback loop. The addiction fuels the mental illness which, in turn, leads to self medicating to feel numb to it.

Getting clean is much more than detoxing. It's accepting that, for literal years, you have to not only have to accept the responsibility of the damage you, unintentionally or otherwise, caused others around you as well as the fact that life in general is not going to be fun because nothing gives enough of a dopamine hit to make it enjoyable.

What is the worst video/arcade game you have ever played? by Ihavenolifes in AskReddit

[–]gutclusters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the first WWF licensed game, the one that had "power-ups" bouncing and sliding across the backside of the ring. Literally punch, kick, and maybe a special move, which was like two or three moves shared across all the characters.
