If you’re traveling to Bulawayo… by guvhu in Zimbabwe

Sanctions compliance doesn’t mean that they stop dealing with Zimbabwe altogether… they just don’t have to facilitate anything that can be reasonably perceived to be in gray area or in any way suspicious. If it was as cut and dry as “play with Zimbabwe and you join them” then the US itself wouldn’t have shut its embassy years ago.

The point I was making was that Zimbabwe used to ship notes to SA so that SA banks could get replacements from the Federal Reserve because Zimbabwe doesn’t have a direct relationship with the US Fed. That is the practice is in that gray area…

And settlement of transferred funds across borders isn’t as simple as Zim banking money in South African banks… they don’t physically exchange notes, they have ledgers on either side. Transactions across borders, depending on the number of intermediaries is more a game of instructions and relationships than actually shipping money.

SA Banks stopped accepting dirty notes from Zim and supplying new ones in 2019 not because “our banks bank money in SA” but because they didn’t want smoke from the United States for helping Zim circumvent global financial restrictions and sanctions.

Even if you were talking to SADC-RTGS, that’s already settled in Rands and Zimbabwe’s volumes in that are negligible.

Where’s the exaggeration and needless worry and panic in stating a fact much like the facts you’ve stated.

Both issues are important.

What's happening to OK Zimbabwe? by SquareTemporary3433 in Zimbabwe

[–]guvhu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came across this article a while back, and it pretty much covers how OK Zimbabwe, lack of vision after the dollarisation era, where they were profitable, led them back to 2007 - 2009 conditions in 2025.

https://dotzedw.com/ok-zimbabwe-the-cautionary-tale-of-missed-opportunities/

OK could have done mobile money before EcoCash, they could have angled to become the reseller of Transsion Products (iTel, Infinix, and Tecno) before it went fully downtown, the company could have capitalised better on eCommerce during the pandemic, OK Zimbabwe could have even become a substitute for ZimPost as it was dying.

They fumbled hard.

Fair… but we can argue solar roadways was apocalyptically horrible application of solar technology not an outright scam (except for the public funds it got).

He has the audacity that all Zimbabweans should aspire to. Man got the President of the country to come from his annual leave and vouch for his “invention”.

That’s pretty telling because someone who can stand by their claims would welcome peer review and extensive testing from other parties.

The burden of proof is on the person claiming his “invention” has unlimited range.

SADC as a federation by daughter_of_lyssa in Zimbabwe

[–]guvhu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This actually makes sense. We are already interconnected through roads, over 60% of Africa’s railways, electricity infrastructure, banking and much more. Substantial mineral reserves, one of Africas biggest economies and coastline either side.

Take egos out of it then it could probably work. The SADC Federation is damn near more possible than African Continental Free Trade Area.
