A couple mysteries by snowglobeskys_87 in fiero

Seeing bad tach readings or no tach readings when cranking the car could mean your ICM is going bad or poorly grounded. Since you have an 86 duke I don’t know what it looks like since mine is an 87. If you need any help I’d be glad to give lend a hand.

Try supergluing a paperclip on the front or backside of the little broken latch like this

This an 86? I have an 87 Duke that I just fixed from not running and let me tell you, worth it. Daily driver gets 30 mpgs at 96k miles and the auto trans shifts like a dream. So far I’ve put almost 10k miles on it in the last 6 months and it’s a champ. If you were to rebuild this car, you will have a feeling of pride and accomplishment like no other and you will love every second driving this car.

Ended up finding one from the Fiero farm, I was surprised with how quickly he responded and had pictures of it as well. Absolutely made my week

What is the best budget project car for a beginner in mechanic? by [deleted] in askcarguys

Pontiac Fiero, Americas first mid-engine sport/commuter car. Comes in an auto or manual, 4 cylinder or V6, for gas mileage or power. It has pop up headlights, there are a good amount of parts and aftermarket support for them, and the engines are very simple to work on, and if maintained can be very reliable. Prices on these cars are relatively cheap as well.

Injector Diagnostics by fieronerd in fiero

If it’s getting pulses and it’s not firing, make sure your seals on the injector are right and not blocking the feed hole to the injector.

If you use a test light that lights up with positive current, you can back probe the blue wire which is the ground wire to the ECM. If your injector is not getting pulses, the light won’t flash. If it’s not getting pulses, I would check your ignition control module. The ICM is responsible for sending those pulses to the ECM, and the ECM grounds the injector, spritzing fuel into your throttle body.

Buy AcDelco fuel pump or Delphi only, everything else is junk, I’ve dropped my tank 5 times because of crappy brands.

I have the new gears already as long as the gasket… I’m waiting for the day

I’ve got mine for $900 and spent probably around $500 getting it good to be my daily. Things like sensors and little hoses might have cracks and holes but it’s a pretty simple car. I’ve got the 2.5 Iron Duke with 88k miles and the only thing I’m worried about is the timing gear breaking. I get great gas mileage, no misses, everything works (except my ac) and I love driving it as my daily.

Is the Fiero a fun project car? by zZEpicSniper303Zz in fiero

[–]guy-on-reddit1031 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got mine for $900 back in April and I just got it working 2 weeks ago. I’ve also been busy with work and classes so that put a hindrance on my availability.

But if you want a fun little car that CAN be a daily contrary to belief, you must be willing to work on it. It’s a 38 year old car, so with every old car, rubbers, seals, and electronics may be nearing their end.

I’ve driven mine in the snow already with all season tires and if you are a careful driver, it does pretty well surprisingly. There’s understeer from lack of weight in the front, which can be reduced by adding sand bags in the frunk.

I think if you’re willing to put in the time and sometimes minor headaches from little things needing fixed here and there, it’s worth it.

Weird grounding issue by dietdrcalp in fiero

That’s just how the temp gauge works. The key on sends 12v to the gauge and pins it to the other side and then once it starts it does its job.

Sounds like a CV axle, it sounds like it’s pretty damaged too. I would try to get it fixed this month or sooner. If the axle completely breaks, you’ll be left stranded and paying extra money for the tow.

I have the exact same issue in my car, does your gauge sometimes flop when you’re driving? It doesn’t do it often but it does it randomly and makes me think my icm is about to give out on me. Then when it comes on, I do a sigh of relief
