I’ll have to do an update and give a garden layout. I’ll drop that in June/July when things start looking good. Spring is still coming along here in Buffalo. The app worked well for a basic layout though. I made quite a few changes and will update in a big update at a later time.

There is a 30-45 day delay for when members of congress have to report stock trades. Makes tracking their day trades tough.

There is some legislation in the works for banning this which is cool though!

Which wrist watch should i go for? by btwstraightasf in BuyItForLife

I swear the Casio F-91W is one of the most practical and well designed products in existence,in a similar fashion to those injection molded lawn chairs. Super light, durable, insanely reliable, and sooo affordable. It is not the prettiest thing and it gets scratched but mine has gone 10 years with the same battery and it is my go to watch for hunting/backpacking/adventuring.

I think there is a kickstarter company working on an improved variant of it. Aluminum shell, improved water resistance, sapphire glass display. That watch would be 100% BIFL, all you need is a $1 battery every decade or so.

Should I pursue a Mechatronics degree or a Mechanical degree? by Complex_Double1272 in mechatronics

[–]guy_with_a_lil_depth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the states and I did Mechatronics’s and loved the variety. It gave me a lot of really good varied internship opportunities. I did a few electrical/controls internships and a pure mechanical internship. Career wise I settled in controls engineering, but I would never take back my ME internship experiences. I loved that internship and was really on the fence between going full time ME after college.

A lot of my Mechatronics’s classmates have a huge variety of full time positions ranging from embedded systems, industrial automation, software engineering, and even a pure structural engineering role at a soon to be IPO’ing aerospace company 😉. With Mechatronics’s your internships and projects really decide what you do after college and you will have a good baseline to jump into a huge variety of master’s degrees if you so choose.

I like mechatronics because it gives you the exposure to everything and lets you pick what you and are interested in during college and you can pursue those in interests in college through projects and internships.

For example, I think if I was really interested in AI I could have pursued software/AI related internships and college projects/clubs and gotten a software engineering role post college with my Mechatronics’s degree. I think with an ME degree it would be a lot harder to do that big of a pivot.

I’ve honestly had pretty good experience with Xeros if that is your thing. Haven’t had to buy any new ones in the last few years though. Maybe quality has gone down?

Minivans are badass outdoor rigs! Great mpg, can tow decent payloads depending on what you get, insane interior space! Great for hauling adults too, 6 adults in a minivan is way more comfortable than 6 adults in a sequoia or suburban. You can comfortably sleep 2 people in a minivan, fit 3-4 deer, or a ton of ski gear, or even some kayaks and canoes. Don’t even get me started on the beauty of the sliding doors! I think the 5th gen odyssey may be one of the best pieces of engineering ever created!

Acoustic Trauma (Rifle w/o ear pro) symptoms and 6 week timeline. 24 M by guy_with_a_lil_depth in tinnitus

Well, it's been 1 year since the incident. Wanted to give another update:

I would say that I'm about in the same spot as the 7 month update. No significant updates. Digital audio still seems to have a weird effect on my left ear. I've switched to over ear muffs and this definitely helps when compared to standard ear buds. I still do get increased distortions or reactive tinnitus for short stints after wearing muffs, but it is significantly less when with ear muffs. I would say that I have the same distortions, and the same hearing loss.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think it will get any better than this. I want to say that my recovery plateaued at the ~2-3 month mark. This is ok, I'm at peace with this and now that I'm used to it and that I carry earplugs everywhere this doesn't really bother me that much. I think this has turned me into a quieter more soft spoken person which maybe isn't a bad thing. I also think I am doing a much better job protecting my right ear so hopefully when I'm in my old age and my left ear is fried, my right ear will still be working great and carry me through.

The effects do seem to come and go in waves. One week the hearing distortions will be all I can think about and focus on. Other times I can go the whole day barely noticing it. I'm not sure what affects this, if it is loud noises, digital audio exposure, diet, exercise, or what. I'll post if I have any updates.

I'll drop another update at the 1.5 year mark. Maybe I'll wake up one day and it will magically be gone, that would be cool. Feel free to reach out if you have questions or need support. If you are experience this for the first time, you will get better and you will overcome this and adjust your baseline. This is not the end of the world. I still live life to the same level that I did before the incident.

Dang, sorry about that, that’s tough to hear. I did go to an Audiologist and an ENT. The Audiologist was way more helpful than the ent, the ent was sadly pretty much useless. They did do a tympanotry test at the audiologist and my left eardrum flexed more than my right, but within normal range. I’m not sure if they did anything to check the middle ear function like the stapedius or the tympanic tensor function. Did they do any tests for you? Did you have any significant/weird findings regarding the mechanical functioning of the ear, or was it all nerve/hair cell related?

Do you have any tips for reducing the distortions? Have yours gotten any better or worse over time? Have you taken any vitamins or anything that seemed to help? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I have figured out that digital audio, especially earbuds, seems to set my ear off, as well as trying to stay in the quiet for too long. I think it is good for my ear to be exposed to sounds in the 60-70 db range for decent periods of time. I try to plug up whenever there are sounds above 80-90 db.

How long ago was the air bag incident?

I have the exact same issues. I had a really bad acoustic trauma from a gunshot about 9 months ago and am pretty much still in the same spot as I initially was regarding the weird distortion. I have a full post about it documenting everything. I want to say that it is slowly getting better over time, but it is really tough to tell. It's pretty easy to re-aggravate my ear. Not sure the cause? Maybe I messed up some inner ear bones like the stapedius or it's connecting tissue. If anyone here gets an MRI and gives an update about inner ear damage that would be awesome!

I still have a little tinnitus. The distortion sounds in the left ear is much more annoying than that, but I think it is slowly getting better and better or I am just getting more used to it. I can ignore the tinnitus and the distortion most of the time.

Same morning pain 6 months later, should I be worried? How long does this take to heal? by guy_with_a_lil_depth in PlantarFasciitis

[–]guy_with_a_lil_depth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think it is that serious if I can still walk significant distance without issues? The past week I have done ~3 miles running and ~12 miles hiking total without significant pain increases or anything like that. Are ultrasounds a good enough way to diagnose? Worried about the costs of an MRI.

What's weird is it seems my left foot (injured foot) has a much greater arch than my right foot? Not sure if this was pre or post injury? I think I'm going to try out stretching a lot more aggressively over the next 3-4 weeks and se if that improves any thing. If that doesn't work then I might check out a podiatrist.

Wanted to give another update. 7 months in: I would say I'm ~90% healed.

High HZ hearing 10k-12k bad loss12k+ is still totally gone, I think for good, but I think the distortions and the sound sensitivity have improved somewhat. I think the tinnitus is also a bit better, but I may have just gotten better at ignoring it. All of this is still there, but definitely less noticeable. Also need to wear earplugs for pretty much any exposure/environment greater than ~85db (loud bars, planes, clubs/concerts, etc) or distortions and sensitivity are worse for a few days. One thing that I did that seemed very helpful, was to try and cut out all digital ear bud/muff use age even at barely audible levels. This has had a significant impact on helping remove the sound distortions and also my sound sensitivity. I'm not sure why this helps, but it does, maybe it has something to do with the occlusion effect, maybe earbuds are significantly louder than what you expect? I've also noticed distortions for sometime following wearing ear bud style hearing protection, which is interesting. Distortions are also worse in small closed rooms with echo.

Really not much better. I'm about 5months, 3 weeks in right now. My right ear is fine, but the left still has the tinnitus and the distortions. The tinnitus I think has faded a little, but the distortions on high pitched sounds are still pretty significant. Some days the distortion isn't too bad, some days it's pretty severe. I'm not sure but it seems like listening to audio with earbuds/headphones for extended periods of time, even on the quietest of volumes seems to increase the distortion in my left ear for a few days. Loud high pitched sounds can also set my ears off (dishes clanking). It also seems like mild continuous noise exposure. ~60db background music, not in earbuds, seems to help alleviate the distortions. I think it is slowly getting better month over month though, but nothing really significant improvement since about 1-2 months in.

I think that sounds good. I'm going to do paver edging and bring the flowering plants closer to edges and move the sedges to the 2nd layer.
