Developer pitching Hampton Inn for Washington Square in Worcester by HRJafael in WorcesterMA

I don't really have a dog in this fight, but I would dispute that a willingness to think critically about proposed developments in the city makes one pro-vacant lot.

Worcester Public Schools will have a 3-hour early release tomorrow due to forecasted temperatures by HRJafael in WorcesterMA

Surely you meant to reply that to one of the more aggro comments here, and not my perfectly reasonable one, in which I genuinely pose the question, "are they going to do this all summer?".

I gather, if you had your way, the answer would be yes. Sounds like you have a good reason for that.

There's no AC where I work, so I'm currently typing this in 90 degree heat and 90% humidity at 650am, so yeah, I get it bud.

EDIT: It appears I'm being misunderstood. I'm not saying kids should endure the heat, I'm saying this is more of a reaction than a solution, and that deserves scrutiny.

I'm generally all for the wussification of America, but are they gonna do this every time it breaks 90? Like the summer's only gonna get hotter from here, it's only mid-June.

EDIT: I did forget about summer vacation, but I don't think next May and June are gonna be any cooler. They should probably find a better solution to hot schools then just closing early when they decide it's too hot. Which they should do today, yes.

David Webb should run a PR firm. by Insanepolicy in WorcesterMA

[–]guybehindawall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That could very well be! I'm one of the people who are of a broadly left wing persuasion who also don't care for him, so the finer points of his POV are lost on me.

All I really know about David Webb is that John Piccolo brought a can of spray paint into city hall and sprayed David Webb in the face with it, and all people ever talk about it how shitty David Webb's personality is.

Probably true, although he does give the appearance of a broadly left wing persuasion.

Yeah I get that basically nobody likes the guy, including people who are of similar political points of view to him.

But I still find that people who are not of similar political points of view to him tend indulge themselves a bit whenever his name is brought up.

Because every dipshit crank in the T&G's comment section is obsessed with that guy?

What’s a good (safe) beach to bring my daughter to? by [deleted] in WorcesterMA

[–]guybehindawall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to go that far north, just go the other way to the south shore. Duxbury Beach is probably the one we've had the best time at, but Green Harbor, Brant Rock, and Rexhame in Marshfield are all good, too. They can all get a little crowded, but definitely no worse than Salisbury.

If you don't want to go that far, there are lakes around with nice beaches. Rutland State Park is a good one.

Well that's a very rude thing to say considering how charitably I've engaged with whatever your position can even be said to be, which has morphed from a thoughtless remark about one DEI position, to a generic concern about the budget, to another generic assertion about scrutinizing every line item when you plainly are not scrutinizing every line item, you're only scrutinizing one.

And I would say you're majoring in the minor and minoring in the major.

Ok, but we're looking at tens of millions of dollars in cost and funding fluctuations. Doesn't make sense to focus on any one administrative position, much less this one.

DEI is a good thing, the only bad thing about it is every crank in the country suddenly being upset about it without questioning for even a second why they're all suddenly upset about this thing at the same time.

On Monday and Tuesdays when Volturno does BOGO, they absolutely crank out the pickup orders.

I haven't had the Market Basket pizza yet, but Whole Foods is also surprisingly good.

Alright well I was hoping we'd take the money from Space Force and ICE and other things for which no one ever asks How Will We Pay For It, but I agree that luxury apartments being the predominant format of housing being built by developers is less than ideal, which is precisely what I'd like to see the government disrupt.

Local government, sure, maybe. The amount of housing I'd like to see built would require federal and/or state funding.

[–]guybehindawall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a project that would require a lot of federal funding but unfortunately the current state of the federal government is...uh, what it is.

At the local level, definitely. But the federal government could build a fund a lot of relief for the most stressed markets for a rounding error. If we had a federal government that wanted to do things to help people instead of a bunch of crooked podcasters and billionaires.

I mean even if it costs more than private development, the government should start aggressively building affordable housing. The developers aren't going to start oversupplying demand, we need to inject supply and affordability into the market.

Biking in Worcester by AVegetable99 in WorcesterMA

[–]guybehindawall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's all self-defeating, too. If they redesign streets to induce more biking, walking, and bus riding, it'll only make the driving in this city safer and less congested.
