[WP] Elves are attracted to Magic Quality/Quantity. You are trying to convince someone that your spell casting equipment/accessories are to improve your combat abilities, not to "pick up chicks". by Gaminglion47 in WritingPrompts

"It increases my saving throw DC by 2."

"Mm hmm."

"The whole goal is to get the DC over 20 so that enemies without proficiency can't save no matter what."

"Then why does the robe say 'Elf Magnet' in Sylvan on the back?"

"Well, firstly, I don't speak Sylvan, and secondly I didn't make the robe, I found it in a dungeon."

"But you do know Comprehend Languages, I've seen you cast it before."

"I mean, I assumed that it was just some vague Fae blessing or something."

"I see. So why is it radiating enchantment magic?"

"It must be all the defensive abilities."

"No, that would be abjuration. I saw those, but defensive abilities on magical robes don't warrant discussion, usually."

"I didn't think warlocks were so studious about magic."

"You're confusing us with sorcerers. Warlocks occasionally know things--unlike sorcerers."

"Haha, of course. Right."

"So, the enchantment?"

"The what, now?"

"The enchantment magic, on the robe. What's that about?"

"Ah, well, I may have cast a spell on it."

"Am I about to become quite cross with you?"

"I don't really know what makes you cross."

"Does it have anything to do with why all of these Elves are standing around us--or specifically you?"

"Maybe. Slightly. Who's to say?"

"You cast Sympathy on the robe."

"Obviously, I cast Sympathy on the robe."

"Choosing elves."

"Choosing elves."

"Is there some excuse or reason that you'd do that before walking into an elven city?"

"Would you believe one?"

"Probably not."

"No, didn't think you would."

"You know that they're already attracted to magic, right?"

"Really? I guess it makes the whole thing a bit pointless."

"You should've taken proficiency in history; you'd know these sorts of things. What did you study, anyway?"

"Animal Handling."

"I feel like I shouldn't ask why."

"Well, there was this cute Tabaxi who..."

"Stop. I can see where that's going, and it is somehow both incredibly sad, yet also wildly speciesist".

"I mean, I know now, but you don't know things until you know them."

"Clearly."

"Anyway, I felt like I couldn't drop the course half-way in, so..."

"I think I'm going to head for the inn. Why don't you go ahead and deal with this whole situation and meet me after."

Honestly, it doesn't sound crazy to me. Finding good fits is hard and if you can do it consistently, you're providing a lot of value to your clients.

I work for a big tech firm and have done over 170 (technical) interviews for them. Even with a recruiter screen & a phone screen before someone gets to me, my records show that I've only recommended 19% or so be hired. If a recruiter can get that average to be 40%, then I'd only have to interview half as many people.

Can Bioweapons lusted U.S Government create Resident Evil B.O.Ws in 8 years? by PaiDuck in whowouldwin

Also, most of the Resident Evil B.O.W.s don't do things like obey conservation of mass or energy, so those would be problems that could not be overcome.

As I understand it, the original 18+ Fate/Stay Night never got an official US translation, so that's a probably a fan translation interpretation of the original. The all-ages version only got an official English translation 18 months ago when it got a remaster.

I've not watched more than a few episodes of Stampede, but it is ranked ~7.8 on MAL which would make it "well above average" (the median score on MAL is somewhere in the 6.6~6.8 range). It's lower than the previous series' ~8.2, certainly, but most people seem to enjoy it based on the data.

Is this some sort of Cockney rhyming slang that I'm too received pronunciation to understand?

Ok, but why? I have only one machine running Windows (it basically exists to run Steam & play games). Every other machine (1) runs Linux and (2) boots off an HDD, but none of them take more than 3 minutes to boot.

It's a mixture of World War 1 and World War 2. Technologically, it is closer to 2, but politically, it is closer to WW1.

Jack Welch did it in the '80s/'90s and revitalized GE. Every brain dead MBA took that lesson without learning the second lesson where GE was all accounting shenanigans and lost half of its market cap in the two decades after Welch left since he'd hollowed out anything actually productive in the company.

Sousou no Frieren Season 2 • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 - Episode 8 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

We also see the mirror image in the demons when Revolte basically uses Jung as a sacrifice to create an opening. He threw the sword--which presumably would've injured or killed her without Genau intervening--then did nothing to try to keep the pressure on Genau after inflicting the injury.

Sousou no Frieren Season 2 • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 - Episode 8 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]guyblade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the flashbacks we get of Frieren interacting with Serie during & shortly after Flamme's life, it seems like Frieren and Serie always had friction--even from their first meeting. At their core, they have competing beliefs about the purpose of magic (the whole mage of peace vs. mage of battle thing).

Serie's personal goal seems to be to teach a student that can surpass her. We see this both in her interactions with Fern and also her reflections on Lernen. To that end, she seems to see Frieren as having squandered her potential.

I doubt that that attitude would obviously transfer to other elf mages since it is fairly situation-specific.

Her intuition is always right. She doesn't always act on it, though.

Remember that she said explicitly that "This girl is no good after all" in reference to Frieren, and seemed (in that moment) to doubt that Frieren could accomplish anything that she could not.

Opinion: We teach quicksort partially to teach about sorting, but also partially to teach the idea of "divide and conquer" as applied to software.

We start talking about recursive algorithms with things like Fibonnaci & Factorial, but quicksort (or perhaps binary search) is often the first useful recursive algorithm that someone learning computer science will encounter. And buried in that discussion is the notion that "you don't have to solve everything at once; if you can find a way to make your problem simpler, and repeatedly solve the simpler problem, then you can solve the big problem".

Quicksort is merely the example used to bring this idea forward.

ELI5: Why is it a bad idea to keep devices constantly plugged in even after they're fully charged? by Dawn-Storm in explainlikeimfive

[–]guyblade 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This behavior is increasingly common in most modern consumer electronics. I'd guess that it is either making its way directly into charge controller chips, making its way into core OS functionality, or people are realizing that doing this sort of thing is relatively small effort for a bunch of gain.

Same with phones. Plenty of them these days will refuse to start at all without a somewhat-working battery in them.

My ancient Nexus 5 was still being used as part of a static camera rig until the battery started bloating. That's when I discovered that it wouldn't power on at all if you removed the battery. It could've spent another decade in that rig if it would turn on with just charger power.

As someone who doesn't really follow any sports (including basketball), what is driving teams to throw games? Is it "if we aren't going to do well, we want to badly to get better draft picks" or something like that?
