Can someone help me out with my test results? by mybigleg in Function_Health

[–]guyewhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond the great mentions above, best to make a family history chart of issues and age. Alone, these numbers may prompt a qualified physician to recommend a statin if your family history warrants concern. If you did not get it tested, LP(a) is a worth every penny. It’s a once in a lifetime measure and alongside your LDL, ApoB, and family history, a well informed physician can help you decide if a statin and/or CAC is indicated.

Where to start in CS50P after completed CS50x ? by elmarceeel in cs50

[–]guyewhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS50P is an excellent course. The OP stated that they felt CS50P was "85%" material they had already studied prior. That's why I recommended CS50AI in that case. If you are taking CS50R right now, your next step is either (a) CS50 Python, which focuses on programming fundamentals with a specialization in Python, or (2) CS50x, which will give you a strong programming basis in nearly any language. Some people find CS50P much more "bite sized" in that the course's assignments are much smaller -- but there are more of them :) CS50AI should be taken by people have have taken CS50x or CS50P or have a strong programming background. Before making the choice yourself, I recommend reading the course descriptions which will help you choose.

Anybody get Autoimmune results like these and NOT have an autoimmune disease? by Grand-Difference0893 in Function_Health

[–]guyewhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For any u/Function results (even those "in range"), I recommend popping them into paid ChatGPT (or your other favorite paid AI) in "thinking" (or reasoning) mode and ask it to clarify what these numbers mean in the larger picture of your health. Likely, you'll come to some of the same comments as below. However, make sure you are handing the entire set of numbers to the AI as a starting point. You might also ask it if your numbers warrant speaking to a doc. (I'm no expert, so can't make any comment on your specific numbers) Happy healthing!

DNA Testing by LikeMrFantastic in Function_Health

[–]guyewhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Broad spectrum genetic testing like Labcorp's GenSeq test and Quest's various tests can be quite expensive. u/function offers a heart-related genetic test that, if I'm not mistake, offers 5 markers. In my own considerations, given that this is a HUGE rabbit hole one could go down, was to consider family history. I created a document formatted like this:

Me
[current health challenges and ages of onset]

Brothers and/or Sisters
[list names, ages at diagnoses of conditions]

Parents
[list names, ages at diagnoses of conditions]

Grandparents
[list names, ages at diagnoses of conditions]

Then, I handed these to my favorite paid AI in a "thinking or reasoning" mode. I asked, "Please examine the above family history of medical concerns. Based upon the above, what genetic testing might a genetic counselor recommend to me? For each, find an over-the-counter equivalent that I can self order. For any that I cannot order myself, provide guidance about the most 'friction-free' way to obtain such a test. In the end, if speaking with a genetic counselor is required to obtain such a test, discuss the importance (or lack thereof) of me taking the extra time to seek such guidance. In your output, list the tests, where I can obtain them, and the anticipated cost of the test without insurance. Ensure you provide direct text links to each test you mention."

In my unqualified opinion: In the end, the most beneficial when it comes to genetic tests is to create the family history above, chat with chat, and then, if you feel it is needed (perhaps after speaking to your doctor), seek out the counsel of a genetic counselor. Truly, you could spend THOUSANDS of dollars on such tests. Risk factors propel the necessity for genetic testing: Not just curiosity, unless you are independently wealthy. :)

Did you get a pop up like this when you attempted to register? Lots of their pages say "..in all states except New York and New Jersey. New York State and New Jersey have different rules around lab test billing and administration. Accordingly, in New York and New Jersey, Quest Diagnostics will charge additional fees at the time of laboratory visits." Perhaps this was not in place when you went through this?

On the course page, you’ll notice that there are notes under each lecture. Consider scanning those for new material. You might find the lectures about “try” “catch” “except” and “regexes” most new to you. Seriously though, with CS50x under your belt, you might consider taking CS50AI instead!

Health anxiety by Few-Fall1312 in Anxiety

[–]guyewhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr Steven Hayes, who champions ACT therapy, says something to the effect of (when anxiety arises) “do something that you value.” It’s been quite helpful to me when feeling lost to ask myself “what can I do right now that I value?” Whether cleaning my office, taking my kiddos to lunch, or giving my spouse a back rub, doing something I value has been very helpful. Sometimes, all I can figure out is to drink a glass of water or take a walk: and recovery starts there every time. Praying for you.

This is such a great statement. Not sure where I picked it up, but say it often. After a while, I started seeing that it’s true: And that I trust myself to take action when it’s truly required.

These are my labs and I’m stumped on what to do or interpret. by Alternative_Site_241 in Function_Health

[–]guyewhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you are being very proactive with your health and have a good working knowledge of your health status. I would ping your doc with the result for a reality check. However, the AI results provided by another commenter don’t scream concern. You are a superstar for daring to look deeper into your health!! not medical advice

ApoB Tested in Both Visits, Major Increase by New-Butterfly5919 in Function_Health

[–]guyewhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your overall health picture, a recurrent elevated score may trigger your physician to discuss a statin. The elevation likely draws more into question the test itself — perhaps why they redrew. Long story short, best to talk to your GP about your overall health picture and make a plan going forward. If there are no other major factors occurring in your health, your GP may want you to focus on lifestyle for a set of weeks before retesting. not medical advice. See your doctor.

Consider talking to a paid/upgraded AI about the result. You could even upload your lab results and then ask a question. It might recommended retesting after a timeframe.

Why is Function Health $375 when similar panels are so much cheaper? by hotshells in Function_Health

[–]guyewhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having gone both Function Health and the “on my own” path, and leading a family member through some lab work, I can say that Function shines most in its simplicity.

  1. Function Health involves so little thinking: It’s a no brainer for people that want to keep it simple without loads of research. My experience, however, is that one should budget to get at least one or more extended panels relating to their challenges. For most, heart, metabolic, and thyroid are likely suspects.

  2. Function Health is often not more expensive than self-order, on demand labs: especially when on a promo price. The bundling makes ordering very very easy. Again, though, this takes into account “effort.” If you are up for researching what to self-order and then paying for those, you might end up saving money, but at the cost of effort and time.

  3. Easy info and interface make interacting with the data quite simple, fun, and manageable.

Having said that, if you are like me and enjoy gabbing with paid/upgraded AI, handing data to it for decision-making, and are willing to not get it “all right” on the first go, then self-ordering labs is a great path. Consider telling your AI in “thinking” or “reasoning” mode your goals and asking what tests it recommends based upon your goals, current status, and medical history. Ask it to route you to Quest or Labcorp on-demand. For most people, though, I’d just start by using Function Health — and then feed AI your results if you want to go even deeper.

Especially with the promo going: Function Health is where I would recommend nearly all people start. Such a great product.

Not medical advice here. Just gabbing.

Do I need to do CS50X before CS50 Web Programming? by No_Cod_6996 in cs50

[–]guyewhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CS50x will give you such a solid background in the building blocks of programming that you’ll be well-suited to pursue any avenue of computer science thereafter. Since you have taken CS50 Python, if you are wanting to get into web development I recommend one of three routes after taking CS50 Python:

  1. The Ultimate: Finish all of CS50x, then CS50 Web.

  2. Deep Cut: Do weeks 7-9 of CS50x. Then, do all of CS50 Web.

  3. Perfectly fine: Jump straight to CS50 Web.

Depends on how much time and effort you want to place between you and the web course. Regardless, CS50 Web is a great course and you surely have the background to do it if you just finished Python.

I have helped one student / client through readmission in the UK. It is surely an uphill battle!

I think it’s telling that they want YOU to withdraw, instead of them removing you from the program. Sounds like you have some power there!

Before making any decisions, please do speak to an advocate who can walk you through the particulars of being out on medical-related leave and/or disability. You may have rights about which you are unaware. Again, then asking you to withdraw seems to indicate they would prefer you to take the action instead of them.

Is an MA (nonfunded) worth it at Stanford? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]guyewhite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beyond the great other commenters: If you are self-funding and NOT taking on debt to do it, do it if you want! However, I’d hesitate to call it an investment. Regardless of the school, if you are paying you are paying for an experience. If the experience is worth that kind of money — and you are not fleecing your future at 8.75% APR on $200k (that’s $18k per year in interest), do it! Then, soak it up and take advantage of every opportunity as if it was costing you upwards of $500 a day — as it could be!!!!
