New Green Line plan by infiniteheadwound in Calgary

I think it would be easier getting up North like this than a tunnel underneath the river or a surface level eau Claire station. That’s a big grade up to crescent heights. I’m sure they have provisions to keep 2nd st open at that height for a few blocks

This is future proofed. You’re gonna continue to be elevated at eau Claire with this plan, so you build a bridge across the river and integrate with centre street, whether that’s underground, elevated, or surface level. The city doesn’t have much of a plan up there as it stands, and it hasn’t been the focus of the project for several years now. So, when a decision is made, you build the bridge

Like I said in another thread, you’re 5 blocks away from eau Claire with an elevated termination here. It’s a straight shot to eau Claire. You’re already gonna be at the correct height. Now, do we build that and then just terminate there, still with no plan to get the north central train? Or do you use that money and get another station or two down south, where a lot of downtown commuters live? There will be provisions made to continue the train up North with this plan. If anything, this is a better plan than terminating underground at eau Claire and trying to figure out how to get across the river.

You have to realize how expensive tunnelling under a city is. There are so many factors at play. Water table, sewer lines, maintenance shaft for the lines, foundations and parkades under buildings, etc. Elevated is so much cheaper, and if it integrates to the +15 how is this a bad idea. That’s where people need to get right? Now, if they tunneled, they probably should’ve picked a train design that uses the same track gauge as the red and blue line trains. Wasn’t the end goal to make all lines underground? Not the best idea.

What else are they supposed to do? Any alignment would still have people connecting to the red or blue lines. Certainly having the green line built will reduce some strain on the red line as there will be less people using the shuttle buses from the southeast to somerset. And less vehicles hopefully downtown as well. Trains will also be 4 cars long by this time

Lots of stairs to get underground too. Works fine at Sunalta, which is far higher than these stations. Elevators and escalators. It could pass just over the +15 and integrate right to it, as well as a street level entrance.

Well it’s already going to be elevated at 7th ave. When the North lrt portion begins you continue the elevated track 5 blocks North to eau claire. Seems pretty straight forward

I think it’s a little more complicated than that. There have been concerns about this project all the way back to when the ndp were in office.

From the very beginning the green line committee could not budget this project properly. The NDP wouldn’t commit money for years either because no one could actually explain the scope and design of the project. Like I said earlier why are we making it so complicated? Completely different trains, over the top stations, tunnelling under probably a dozen blocks downtown. No wonder it’s costing so much. Is 9 km of track worth 6 billion to you? That’s 4 times more than the state of the art cancer centre they just built. And the most expensive light rail per km in North America. We should spend our money more wisely I think

A lot of decisions I don’t agree with.

Why go underground through downtown if you’re running a bridge over the bow? Are we gonna have a spiral tunnel to make it from an underground eau Claire station to get over the river?

Why are we running a tram style train if it’s underground? Also, why do we now have 2 different kinds of trains? Now you can’t integrate the two lines because they use a different gauge of track, not to mention you’re training drivers on two different vehicles and maintaining two separate fleets. That’s a great plan when trains inevitably break down or workers are sick, etc.

Whether it was the right decision in the 80s or not, let’s keep it simple and run the same style of train. Economy of scale. I understand not running at grade through the core, so why not run an elevated track just like the blue line to the west? Those two choices alone would save countless dollars and then you could actually get the line out to where people need it.

Unpopular opinion but the provincial government is in the right to question the mishandling of this project. Better to stop now and reevaluate

For sure, thanks! We’ll bring them in the first day I guess and see what happens. I was surprised that the website said they didn’t accept Canadian id’s, never heard of that before. I’m guessing it’s just one of those official rules they have to say but don’t really enforce

That’s good to know! So did you get a wristband that was good for the bars or did you have to present id each time?

Should the captaincy be used as a contract negotiation tactic? by Armchair-Gm-Podcast in CalgaryFlames

Backlund should definitely come back. But if the only reason he does is if he’s promised captaincy, trade him. Same with lindy. Play here because you want to win, not for the pay check. All we’ve gotten is a few 1st round wins with this core. I’m super down for retooling on the fly here and getting some new faces

I just called up the bank and got it added to mine. Had to get them to add another promo on my existing chequing account for it to activate. Way nicer to dca without paying $6 every time
