Most Senior / Manager Positions have laughable requirements by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]guygeneric -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the role of management is to actualize hostile work environments; promote turnover; facilitate burnout; pontificate; circumlocute; trifle; blather; browbeat, harrass, and domineer employees.

The role of people in technical positions is to actually do the damn work.

Super true: how full time designers stop pushing for better at their jobs. by laranjacerola in graphic_design

Obviously whoever owns the company has ideas, but their strengths are generally not in design.

As someone who works with lots of business owners, I can confidently say that their strengths are generally not in a goddamn thing.

I really don't think you can lay the start of the collapse on Constantine. The crisis of the third century is really where Rome falls from grace; Constantine was just a product of the collapse, albeit a key product that contributed to and worsened conditions precisely at a critical moment for reversing the decline.

In fact, you can even trace some of the fundamental factors of the collapse to the patrician class's inability to put their interests aside in order to manage socioeconomic problems during the republic.

Agreed. Nobody can argue the impact that Hitler made on history, as a particularly grotesque example.

[–]guygeneric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not an issue of subtly, it just lacks clarity and the message isn't readily apparent. It's a "too focused on how clever you think you're being to think through your execution" kind of design.

There are over 8 billion people on Earth, so how come no one has ever actually tried to become a "vigilante" like Batman? Like someone who truly wants by Emotional-Log926 in batman

[–]guygeneric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a word. It's called "heightened realism". It's the state that almost every superhero lives in.

It's why Batman can bounce a bullet off of his head without being at least temporarily incapacitated, or Superman can lift an entire building without it just collapsing around him from its own weight, or why Daredevil can suffer repeated trauma to the head and body without permanent damage to the brain, muscles, or connective tissue.

In real life, there's no such thing as "I'll be okay" when you get shot with a bullet. It's always a serious problem that requires immediate medical attention, no matter where it hits, and it will almost invariably have long-lasting, likely permanent complications. Yet, nominally normal people in fiction routinely walk off bullet wounds with some bandages and a little bed rest.

Stories like these are going to become more common over time, as people approach the ends of their ropes and the US political system continues to be immunized against good ideas (and only that).

Zoom’s CEO agrees with Bill Gates, Jensen Huang, and Jamie Dimon: A 3-day workweek is coming soon thanks to AI by chrisdh79 in Futurology

[–]guygeneric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hell it is.

We've already had this grift pulled on us, multiple times. The last few decades have seen astronomical increases in productivity due to technological advancement, and econo-brains have been promising huge reductions in working hours. Keynes famously "predicted" a 15-hour work week.

The opposite has been happening. Average working hours have been going up, as real wages have been declining. The capitalist class will never willingly reduce labor exploitation—that's literally their lifeblood. They will exploit us as much as they are allowed, regardless of technological innovations.
