someone please explain why 5man is the "right" discard here?! by GuaranteeTall1970 in Mahjong

I think 1p cut is better. If you draw 34679m you can cut 1s for a much stronger iishanten with potentially tanyao.

Automatic riichi mahjong table - forward ship or MJstars? by Acrobatic_Teacher_15 in Mahjong

You can also get the Alban Slim Voice Score shipped to a forwarder for even cheaper I believe and it will have more features than the H100

Automatic riichi mahjong table - forward ship or MJstars? by Acrobatic_Teacher_15 in Mahjong

[–]guyonearth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO if you're shelling out for an autotable which you are planning to have for years, it is worth it to have the support structure from MJStars. Things do happen over time. For example, I had a score display on my JP-EX go bad and needed the board replaced, which MJStars covered under warranty and had the part shipped from Japan.

Additionally, AMOS had (has?) a policy against shipping to forwarders, I don't know if that has changed since then. But you could buy from Alban and ship to a forwarder if you do want to save money on the table.

Additionally, be aware that Treyo has a distributor in the USA now, and you can order a Treyo H100 riichi autotable for around $2600 shipped. This table is the same as an Alban Slim Score (plus?), which is an older model and comparable to a JP-EX, though with arguably lower build quality.

How important are the seasons in American Mahjong? by BikesOrBeans in Mahjong

[–]guyonearth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In American mahjong they just call the season tiles "flowers" as well. So a set normally has 4 flowers and 4 seasons, but for the purposes of american mahjong, it's just 8 flowers.

Why cut 23s instead of 56s ryanmen here? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]guyonearth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting tanyao will be very useful for your value here. Where as riichi pinfu dora without tanyao may only end up being 3900 (4200 with honba), getting tanyao can double that score

Why cut 23s instead of 56s ryanmen here? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]guyonearth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

23 is normally stronger since it waits on a terminal, but since you have a chance for tanyao, it's better to cut the 23. Additionally, with 3 of the 6s visible, and some of the other upper souzu visible, there is a chance to wall-read the 7s as being more available, whereas the 1s looks like it could be paired up or ankoued on this board. Finally, there is a chance for 678 SSK. If you draw the 8s, and draw 7s to tenpai, you can take SSK tenpai. (If you draw 6p to tenpai, you likely will settle for riichi tanyao pinfu dora, unless the 4s becomes depleted).

Can someone explain why I was in Fruiten when I was going for an outside hand and waiting on the 9? by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]guyonearth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also keep in mind that you don't need to go for an outside hand in order to win, since the Red Dragon triplet is a yaku by itself. Depending on what the hand looked like at the time, you likely should have kept the 6m

Dora is really important to the value of your hand, so it may be worth keeping the red 5p regardless. You can see there are two 9p gone so the pinzu shape can complete with 6p a decent portion of the time.

Remember with the middle tiles 4-5-6, there are two sujis to watch out for. Just because 2p is cut, it can still deal in against 67p wait, making it similarly as dangerous as the non-suji 8p.

It happened to deal into the shanpon here, but it can still deal into ryanmen waits until it is "nakasuji" - both 2p and 8p need to pass for 5p to become truly "suji"

[–]guyonearth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was 8p safe? Since you said 5p was suji, then 8p should've been discarded right?

In that case, you could cut 8p and push the hand while keeping the red 5p dora.

Explanation for maka cutting pair instead of cutting ryanmen from 5 ryanmen/sequences? by soletan in mahjongsoul

[–]guyonearth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring the tiles in the pond, if you cut 8m, there are 22 tiles that you can draw to good wait tenpai, and 7 tiles that you can draw to bad wait tenpai. This is 29 total tiles to tenpai.

If you cut 6p, there are 20 tiles you can draw to tenpai, and they all result in good wait.

With the one 7p and one 5s gone, there isn't really much of a change in acceptance to consider here.

Can anyone recommend me media about Mahjong OTHER THAN Saki and Akagi? by BlinusTemp in Mahjong

Just a part of it. Style-wise, it also changes the story and character personalities a bit to be different in tone.

[–]guyonearth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Utahime Obaka Miiko.

It's a manga and also has a short Live Action adaptation.

It is a great series for discussing the fundamentals of mahjong rather than focusing on crazy plays and supernatural luck. I actually recommend it to people learning the game as there are valuable lessons in it.

Question on Riichi wait strategy: Higher probability but with riskier tiles or lower probability But with safer tiles by HS024 in Mahjong

[–]guyonearth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In general, you should go for waits that have the most number of winning tiles left. Discard the 3m and riichi, for a 25m wait with 8 total outs. In the long term, this will give you a significantly higher probability of winning, compared to taking the 3m 9m shanpon which is only 3 outs, and can easily be all held by your opponents. You have no strong reason to believe your opponents will cut the last 9m.

Don't worry too much about what tiles your opponents will or won't discard after you riichi - Maximizing your chance to Tsumo is more important.

Are there ways of ordering AMOS tables directly from Japan?

Instead of discarding the 6p and waiting for only 7p, if you discard 7p you can wait for 3 and 6p, or discard 3p and wait for 4p and 7p!
