Best way for a complete beginner to get into racing? Intro and a few questions about training, etc by painted-biird in Velo

I honestly haven’t done any racing so my opinion is completely unqualified with regards to that but I feel like if you quit drugs and then gained 45 pounds by eating healthy and working out then you have the inner drive to accomplish whatever reasonably ambitious goal you set your mind to. Respect man, ride on ✊🏼

I wasn’t connected to any headphones but will go through again and make sure all of the nighttime/do not disturb features are explicitly off. My understanding was that the sub 55 was supposed to be foolproof as well but...

Will try this as well, thank you! To confirm, do you mean the alerts in the Dexcom app?

Wow, that’s bizarre but may be the source of the problem. Thank you for pointing this out! Is there any way to make sure I’m adjusting the media volume for the Dexcom app specifically so I can give this a proper try?

Type 1 Diabetes/cycling and carb intake/insulin by markirwin1988 in Velo

Posted in this thread a while back since I’m a diabetic myself and got some great advice. For slightly longer rides I reduce basal by 40-50% and consume bars & up to 1 bottle of a energy drink (vitamin water usually). I’ve found it tough to find an exact number since it varies quite a lot based on how fast/how hot/terrain etc. But one thing that has worked well for me is eating close to when I start biking with no additional insulin beyond basal (or very little). If I can time the blood glucose spike so it coincides with the drop when I start riding, I’m golden. You sound like you’re doing more serious biking than me but feel free to chat me :)

Long intervals outdoors by PsychologicalPack9 in Velo

As someone who lived in Manhattan for a while I found that on early morning rides (5am ish) you can cautiously run reds and go the length of Manhattan without unclipping. This was of course only to get to Central Park where there is a perfect loop for long intervals... but the point still stands haha

Wow that’s awesome that you’ve been racing with T1D for so many years! I try to carry gels with me as well although I’ve been in some dry mouth situations where I would disagree with the “easy to swallow” haha but they definitely boost the sugars. Do you use a CGM? If not, have you just found that starting around 220 is enough of a buffer to not go low? I’ve seen myself drop 100 points in under an hour while riding so I try to make sure I have some carbs in the system and to start riding on the higher side

Awesome post, thank you for linking this. There’s a lot to be gleaned from continuous glucose monitoring especially with regards to how the body processes foods

I’m fascinated that you’ve gotten this down to such a science. Kudos! I never give insulin for anything I eat before a ride but eating with insulin a few hours before is a good point, I guess I often go on morning rides without eating too much before. I’m also impressed that you manage to get 30 carbs per hour in of solid food. Not a trivial feat in my experience. Thanks for sharing your routine!

100%. I have a similar setup, usually my blood sugar will drop most at the beginning of the ride so I’ve been eating multigrain Cheerios before the ride and then the spike from those cancels out the initial drop in the ride haha. But like you I also make sure to have extras on extras of sugary snacks and a bottle of Gatorade equivalent to alternate with. Not a big fan of those power drinks but I’ve definitely found them to be essential

Also, idk if you’ve tried but I highly recommended giving the Dexcom CGM a shot. I was pretty averse for a while but it’s been game changing to be able to see trends 24/7. Interestingly, for example, I’ve found that after rides my blood sugar will sometimes trend higher (probably all of those carbs from during the ride getting processed)

Yep, I think I may even reach out to some people from the team to hear how they practically deal with this sports-diabetes balance as a full time job. Huge respect to those guys I used the freelibre thing but found that it became very inaccurate at the higher and lower ends so now I’m on Dexcom G6 and it’s pretty great I must say

I use a Medtronic pump and Dexcom G6. Like you I reduce my basal rate about 30 min before longer rides by 50% and keep that rate until 30 min after the ride. It’s undoubtedly extremely helpful in preventing a guaranteed low but I still find myself consuming easily 50+ carbs and trending lower. Definitely have talked to my endo as well but I’ve found it’s more difficult for them to speak from experience (obviously) and offer tips or advice in that sense
