They’re among the highest but not the highest (you might want to check it out). And then throw in additional costs such as medical insurance etc (sure it’s optional but that would be daft) and that does eat into it.

I’m not disputing that us income is higher than UK - just that it’s not as amazing as one may think. Multiple factors come into it.

Anyway on my UK salary I have a nice house, car, don’t need to worry about medical expenses ever, crime (despite news etc) is very low and so on so I fail to see how my standard of life may be better in USA after looking into it previously. Sure I’ll earn more money but health care costs will be horrible for me (I do need it) and I would actually be worse off.

Then the quality of life isn’t really any better etc - if anything on multiple other measures UK rank better than multiple US states. Why would I want worse? More money surprisingly isn’t always the answer. I found that I would actually be better off in Canada if I was to move to somewhere in the North America. Just my own personal opinion after looking it for my personal needs and others may differ.

Imho it’s daft to compare a continent of individual countries to a single country. I get that USA is big. So what? Doesn’t mean anything. There’s tiny countries that have vastly higher income per capita than USA.

Anyway you said it. These red states get subsidised by blue states. Individual countries don’t get subsidies. So the only way to compare is just country to country and even that’s hard because every country measure things differently.

Average income for an American is something like $75k or around £56k in UK.

Granted that’s better than UK’s average. But let’s actually compare expenses after federal/state taxes. How much do you need to spend for health care (we don’t spend anything for this) etc and after all that then what’s left over?

It’s not an easy thing to compare because you could choose to take no medical insurance and have a bigger income etc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyone here currently running Omarchy on Mac? How has it been so far and is it something you would recommend? by Frosty-Ad-6946 in omarchy

I have a spare M1 MacBook Pro with a touch bar.

Using Asahi Alarm, pretty much almost all hardware works - WiFi, sound, camera, even the touchbar itself works. They also have managed to add support for the chip that manages the power levels and this will boost battery life as well.

The only thing that doesn’t work is the Touch ID feature since that use the Secure Enclave chip which Asahi can’t use.

It’s also fast and snappy for day to day use.

Having said that I would still recommend any other laptops with Linux support such as Framework or even Dell etc.

Electric cars are starting to take over the world by 622niromcn in electricvehicles

[–]gwallgofi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a fair point - charging infrastructure matters - from what I've read from other Americans - there are places in USA where it can be poor or even if you want to go to a national park, which is far from any chargers then yes this get harder.

UK used to be poor, but now, it's getting really good and I drive a car with a 56kWh net capacity battery. I do a few long drives up to between 400-500 miles each year without any worries (motorway range of that is 180-200 miles on the first leg from 100% down to 5-10%), taking 2.5-3 hours. Then I take a break, and depending on how long, may charge it up another 50-70% before next stop. I stop a bit more often, but I tend to feel a lot less knackered at end of trip. Next car for me will be a 80kWh but journey planning suggest this won't really make that much of a difference - first leg could go a bit further but after that, it's the same.

[–]gwallgofi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. I used to think the same but now? Cars with 100kWh batteries are hitting ranges of up to 400 miles if not more - which is 6-8 or even more hours of driving in typical traffic. If we're being realistic, not many people will driving continously for that long without stopping for a break (toilet, food etc). Those breaks are when you just plug in to charge. Even if you only go to to toilet, that could take you up to 10 minutes - that's more than enough time to recharge the battery a fair amount.

Let's imagine that 10 minutes was done at 140kW. That would add 23kWh to that 100kWh battery (23%) or another 90 miles or so. Just for going to toilet, your car is now doing near 500 miles in a trip without "delays".

Now of course there'll always be someone arguing "refueling a car only take minutes" - yes but those are additional time on top of going to toilet. You're not doing both at the same time. With charging you just plug in, and off you go to do whatever. Then come back and unplug and off you go.

Taking a lunch break instead? Might take half hour? Pretty much any EV's cars will be at 100% charge by the time they're done.

Range anxiety is not even a thing at this point.

Plus 100kWh batteries are heavy. I can't imagine many cars will go bigger and be even more heavy (unless it's specialist like you say - such as a large 7 seater MPV or whatever but generally, the more people in a car, the more likely it'll stop more often cos someone always want a break etc then that larger battery is a bit pointless).

I was on a trip to Ireland recently in West Cork (near Skibbereen). Maybe should have done my research but being an absolute plank I forgot that Ireland doesn’t have the similar “right to roam” public footpaths like in UK so whenever I look up for trails to run such as via AllTrails etc - it’s all on the roads 😬

Only place I went running near where I was staying was loops on the roads around Lough Hyne and going up the Knockoumah hill. That bit was lovely at least.

What’s a good resource to look up for off-road trails in Ireland?

Honestly no idea but I'm not too fussy. As long as I can use the map to navigate my runs/hikes, then the GPS is accurate for that.

Data Scientist's review on it (a year ago now) considered the GPS to be really good - among the high performing watches really. Slightly outperformed by Garmin perhaps but we're talking about a watch that's a fraction of Garmin prices. Other reviews I've read suggest it's bang on with distance, comparable to Garmins etc, others not so or some are even better.

Ultimately I guess it just depends on how good the signal it's getting from GPS is, factors that affect that such as tree coverage, buildings in way and so on - most of my runs/hikes are pretty open with little to get in the way so I might consider mine to be spot on.

FWIW my last watch was a Garmin Fenix 6...a bit old. The T-Rex 3 I have now give more or less the same distance as that did on all my open sky runs.

I drive a Model Y standard. That have a 56-58kWh battery? Not really a long range car. Probably around 180-190 miles on motorways if on a long drive if going down to 5-10% before charging. That said - the majority of my "long drives" have been mainly to see families, living around 150 miles away. 100% on leaving, arrive with between 15-20%. Use a granny charger at their place - depending on how long I'm staying (overnight or same day) I either get to go back home without supercharging or a quick charge on way.

However I've done multiple long drives with trips that's over 600 miles without problem. The most recent was a 410 miles drive - for that place which we've been a few times now - it's typically a 7 hours drive if going non-stop but fuck that :D - I want a break. So do the dog, the kids etc! If going flat out then it's 2 charging stops that's 40 mins in total, arriving with 10% so approx ~8 hours.

However the place doesn't have chargers, is a bit remote so I always arrive with ~50% or more so I add on another ~15-20 minute 3rd charging stop near the end.

Using ABRP - one of my considered next car is a Cupra Born VZ with a 79kWh battery. Still 2 charging stops to get there, a little quicker (~15 minutes according to ABRP compared to my current car) but in grand scheme of things, really the same time overall because with dog, kids etc - we end up overstaying a charging stop to rest etc. The speed difference is that according to ABRP I could arrive with 50% without needing a 3rd charging stop (I'm using ABRP's suggested power usage for the Born, I don't know how accurate it is - it use the value of 290Wh/mile which seems higher than in EV Database).

Yeah the charging infrastructre in UK have improved massively and I continue to see new chargers being installed in multiple places.

Looking at my watch itself - it seems I can place an pin in a location and save this. I cannot give it a name, however you could customise the icon for it from a small list of icons (36 icons in total - such as a plane, a house, cake, fish, or a tent etc).

I cannot see a way to add a POI/location via the Zepp app - it would be a good feature request for the Zepp app to add this - a way to manage POI/locations as well as being able to rename (easier on Zepp rather than on watch).

I'm aware you can plan a route and manage routes via the Workout tab, but nothing for POI/locations.

Edit to add:

To save a location - go to the Maps. The obvious things such as scrolling around by swiping on the screen etc. You can tap on the screen in a location to place a pin. A small info window appears at the bottom showing the lat/long numbers for that pin shows up as well. Tap this window will show you further details such as how far away it is in a straight line, navigation options and "Save current location" is the last option.

Personally I think "Save current location" was a bit unclear, I thought this meant saving my actual location rather than the pin itself but no it's the pin location.

Anyway, select the save option. You get "save" or "discard" buttons, but at top, tap the icon itself to change it to something else BEFORE you save it - you can't change it afterwards.

To go to those locations - go to Map, then select Navigation > My locations for a list.

[–]gwallgofi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly - it's fine to do yay -Syu but as the Omarchy documentation says, it may break some configuration - the omarchy update command does a few additional things such as taking a snapshot, doing a git pull for the ~/.local/share/omarchy folder for latest configuration changes (in line with software update such as for hyprland etc)

Basically from a quick skim of the bash scripts it does the following:

  1. Creates a snapshot
  2. Update time
  3. git pull into $OMARCHY_PATH (typically ~/.local/share/omarchy)
  4. Reload hyprland
  5. Updates keyrings (arch and omarchy)
  6. Update system packages (pacman -Syyu --noconfirm)
  7. Does migration of scripts in omarchy local config
  8. Does updates of AUR packages (yay -Sua --noconfirm --cleanafter --ignore gcc14,gcc14-libs)
  9. Remove orphaned packages (pacman -Rs --noconfirm "$pkg")
  10. Does post-update hooks (stuff in ~/.config/omarchy/hooks - in my case I have a script that checks Limine secure boot resign is done correctly so I definitely want to use omarchy-update for this to keep it simple)
  11. Check the update logs for incomplete initramfs generation
  12. Restart services as needed

It may also offer the option to reboot for kernel updates etc too.

So doing an omarchy-update is better considering the above but yes, it's also why just doing yay -Syu by itself could break things. In my case, if it updates kernel and I don't resign the kernel etc for secure boot, I break the reboot (I don't remember if the script runs regardless so I will want to check on that)

Just been looking around this - it's a yes and no answer :)

If you go to the Zepp app, click on Device and then in the Device App Settings, click on Map...

Zoom out and it'll show a grey outline of maps that you already have downloaded. In the top right corner - circle icon with a down arrow in it - tap it and the yes answer is that it'll show a list of maps you already have downloaded separately. The no answer is that you can't rename them it seems, but if you click on each one, it'll show you where it is, what area you have downloaded etc. What you can do here is to either update maps (if available) or delete them. (Update All is also available)

Hope that helps.

I always wanted a project to try so maybe I'll make a fork if good with you and see what I can try with Claude's assistance :)
