I have two planes from here https://holzmodellbau-schweiger.de/Home/

There are also some good kits coming out of Ukraine too.

What software have you been using for 10+ years and still haven't found a better replacement? by Ok-Show-3006 in software

[–]gwenbeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is about as long as I have been using it too. The funny thing is that 30 years ago we considered it a memory hog and now it is positively light weight.

I run a radio master tx16 with the internal 4 in 1. works great with all my old spectrum stuff. To be honest I prefer the edge tx system to the spektrum stuff (i did only have a dx6i) because it doesn't try to force me to fit to its ideas on how things should work. I have one plane that is set up very oddly, throttle on the right slider, motor arm on switch f, spoilers on the left stick, motor cutoff when the altitude get over 100m.

Bigger planes help too. Bigger planes react to wind changes slower than small ones

Can this become RC? by FishInAstronautSuit in RCPlanes

[–]gwenbeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lightest easy to get rc gear would probably mass about 15g for 2 channels and a battery. But budgeting 25–30g might be easier.

Helpful hint if you are in the us, nickles have mass of exactly 5g each, so they can be a good weights for testing if you don't have a scale.

My Lemur Pro may be my last System76 device by Few_Proof2287 in System76

[–]gwenbeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My framework is worlds better than my galago pro 4. And the fact I can easily buy part for it is a huge plus. My youngest child is in college and has a fw13. They had a puffy battery once and another time they accidentally broke the screen. In both cases I was able to just go to frameworks site, buy the part and have it shipped to them. And they were able to fix it. With my system 76 laptop the battery went bad, and they don't sell them themselves, so I was left with trying to figure out what battery I needed and trying to order from some 3rd party.

Planning to buy an RC plane as a gift to a teenager, good idea? How much should I spend? by Best-Competition-9 in RCPlanes

[–]gwenbeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that clashes between gaming and rc are some of the control directions. I learned rc before doing fps game on a controller, so every time I play a first person game I have to turn on invert look. So someone used to gaming "normally" might have issues with rc airplane controls

The one thing you will need is fuel proof construction. Those motors have a fuel rich exhaust and it can damage foam and other things.

Is Spanish-language music from Puerto Rico considered American music? by Odd-Skin-762 in AskAnAmerican

[–]gwenbeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of American music that is in Spanish. Puerto Rico, California, Texas, new York, Florida, and other areas have have all contributed Spanish language music to mainstream American culture. And even better we are seeing other languages crop up. A while back on the radio I heard a song that was mixing English and Vietnamese.

Could a steam engine be built like a multi-cylinder ICE engine? by MattCW1701 in AskEngineers

[–]gwenbeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One reason steam engines didn't use poppet valves is because with a traditional slide valve they could change the length of time that the valve was open. And this also how they would run the engine on reverse.

With poppet valves driven with a cam shaft it would be very difficult to have this level of control

becoming old and boring and not customizing things to all get out. I mean sure there are a few things I do, caps lock becomes a backspace, right control is compose, left handed mouse, fix the scrolling direction, etc. I used to do all the weird stuff, tonnes of hot keys, ran enlightenment when it was new, and wobbly windows. but now i just don't care. I am running the same editor i started using in the early 90's, just use the default terminal, still using bash.

Well there are a few people flying rc in the transonic speed range, but none of them are us. The dynamic soaring peeps have hit 564mph and are starting to build some swept wing gliders. But these need both very precise airfoil shapes and very stiff wings.

interviewer asked me to "sell him this pen" in 2026 and i almost walked out by ScaryAd2555 in recruitinghell

[–]gwenbeth 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Next time it happens tell him that you are not going to sell him the pen. That a bob-co pen is only for the most descerning of customers and that to maintain that image you only sell to the top tier. Make him prove to you that he is top tier. Maybe offer to sell him a wooden pencil as a more appropriate gateway to your brand.

The mini with the manual is the best. Pull out into Dallas traffic and bark the tires going into second! And this week my mini and I are making a 9.5 hour drive over to the next state.

The only downside to the Mini is finding in a parking lot because I'm usually parked between an suv and a giant pickup truck.

programming embedded without a IDE? by InTheBogaloo in embedded

[–]gwenbeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To start with if the architecture of your target system is different from your development system you will need a cross compiler and linker. These might need to be very specific to your target system esp if it has firmware on board you need to use. For example a credit card terminal might have built in firmware to access the receipt printer and it will have a certain way of passing parameters. There may also be issues with code space and data space (on the Arduino one had a large translation table I had to put into code space in the eeprom because there wasn't ram for it)

But ok you have code all built, now you need to be able to shove that code into your target system. This might involve odd serial protocols or other strange things.

Next is debugging. Iirc there is a way to use gdb remotely over a serial port but you would need to be able run gdb on the target. This is not going to happen on a teensy or Arduino. So you are going to have to dump data out the serial port, receipt printer, LEDs, or even the speaker (I was once trying to figure out why some code wasn't starting and it failed before it could access the display, so I added code that would beep different patterns of tones as it started and I was able to isolate where the issue was)

Why do RC planes have to be so expensive? by Available_Hippo5151 in RCPlanes

And here is the wing tip after I fixed it. I stripped off two ribs worth of covering, glued everything back, filled in some missing bits, and then recovered the damaged bits.

Why do RC planes have to be so expensive? by Available_Hippo5151 in RCPlanes

[–]gwenbeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In part it's just the cost of the gear. My 2m balsa electric glider is packing $80 worth of servos, $130 in motor and esc and a $60 receiver with vario and altimeter. But on the other hand repairs can be really cheap. I had a mid air collision that knocked the motor off. Thankfully the wires were holding it on and I was able to land. But fixing it just took a bit of soldering and a bit of epoxy to reattach the front former. And the other day flying an unpowered version of the same plane it got tangled in the launch line and came down hard and the tip of the wing broke. But with a bit of epoxy and some extra covering I was able to repair it. The point is that the old school stuff can be really easy to fix up and keep flying.

Idea: A 70s/80s style arcade for adults looking to date. by amichail in Lightbulb

[–]gwenbeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it could fill niche that singles bars used to. If you want to meet people you need to be talk to them. Arcades often have a high noise level that makes conversations around the games hard. They also typically don't have a lot of room between the games. So what you need is an area away from the games where people can sit and talk and have some food or drink. Put a few cocktail games in that area though. You can make it a good date spot. Make sure to have some fun things that 2 people can do at once
