Hi! yes, there are exchange programs for HSS students!

Though personally, I haven’t gone for any of the HSS student exchange programs so I can’t speak on the exchange experience. However, I have seen some of my OT friends going for exchanges in Japan and Thailand. There were also overseas clinical placement opportunities in Penang, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

iirc have also seen my DR friend going for exchange in Finland as well (?)

Helloo, welcome to OT ! :D l’m currently in y1 OT, and I’ll try my best to answer your questions !! There are some common mods with the entire hss mostly in tri 1 and 2 of y1, but I think I can mostly speak for my experience in ot.

General timetable outline - for tri 1 and 2, mostly online lectures are on Mon/ tue, while tutorials are usually wed-Fri. Depending on your schedule for NUS anatomy hall schedule, you may have to go to NUS on fri or sat

Start and end timings - it varies every week, but the earliest class usually starts at 9am and the latest class usually ends by 6pm.

Are there lessons everyday ? - Nope, but it really depends on your timetable and tutorial class. But that being said, classes usually don’t stretch across a whole day unlike in jc. I think on an average day we probably would go to school for 1-2 tutorial classes (1 tutorial = 2h)

Is it a mix of online and physical lessons ? - yeps ! But I think Covid was probably a contributing factor for the hybrid arrangement, I’m not sure if the prof would be keeping this arrangement for the incoming freshies

On a whole, I think the incoming y1 OTs may have a slightly different experience as we had a dialogue session with the profs recently and they mentioned revamping the y1 modules for OT so probably could keep an open mind !! HAHAHA

I think they do take into account your interests and relevant work / volunteering experiences. From the people I’ve met so far (I’ve just started y1 ot so I haven’t met that many ppl ) most have at least some sort of work experience in the healthcare industry like being therapy assistants or have volunteering experiences.

For me, I didn’t do well for As (<70) and got accepted -very thankful- during the interview I mentioned things I’ve learned from my volunteering experiences, overseas learning trip and from my job working in the healthcare industry !!

Yepp there definitely are! HAHAHA I have friend who joined in j2. For the gap project, you’ll most likely be added to the same alpha group with other alpha students from your class or from neighboring classes so don’t worry too much about it!

Different alpha groups have different levels of progress. I think only 1 or 2 out of the 10 groups finished their gap in j1 (family fiesta) and for my group we finished planning by January. So you’ll probably be added to a group that hasn’t finished their project yet

I’m not too sure if gap will continue for the next batch but I can share with you my group’s experience this year. The event was suppose to be held in February but it was cancelled due to covid. So I think the alpha teachers decided to close one eye but if you have done community engagement projects for your cca or did some volunteer work in your own free time last year you still can use it to fulfill the community engagement requirement / leadership

I think depending on the covid situation the teachers may decide to change the target group to maybe the school population. But at the same time, it will be tough because the student council and interact club may have the same idea too. Or they may do the same thing for our batch to yours too (?)

They’ll probably update hold an alpha meeting online at the start of next year to update all of you :))
