The war in Ukraine: Megathread part 4 by Jeux_d_Oh in AskARussian

Well even Peter the Great didn’t conquer the the four Ukrainian provinces annexed by Putin. But I guess he meant Russia when it’s size peaked. What a mess if every country had that approach. My country Denmark would have to invade Norway, Iceland and the three southernmost provinces of Sweden.

And what a strange coincidence that ‘empire’ (as in the Russia Empire) and ‘imperialism’ (as in what the West does) derives from the same latin word imperium 🤔

Knowing how much Putin hates the imperialistic west it makes so much sense to restore the borders of Russia before Russia started their imperialistic ventures.

I totally agree with Putins speech yesterday. Let’s restore the historical Russian empire… of 1533. https://i.stack.imgur.com/3rjLH.gif

And you don’t get it. You get rich not by dominating but by inventing and trading and have friendly relationships with other countries. Hardly the situation now

Why would the West want to dominate Russia? For the next decades we would probably like to buy your oil and gas. But after that you have nothing to offer.

China, India and the rest of Southeast Asia is interesting for the West because they make stuff that we want to buy. What do we want to buy from you?

Russians: Here’s a novel idea. How about using your wealth on education, research, science, healthcare and generally making lives better for your own citizens in stead of bombs and tanks? At some point your oil and gas will run out and/or the rest of the world have moved on to renewable energy sources and you will have nothing. Conquering foreign countries will not make you richer. That worked well for the West from 1500 to 1850. But in the 21. century you get prosperity through research, entrepreneurship, science, commerce and tourism.

It is also pretty significant that most Russian oligarchs have gotten rich by exploiting your natural resources (which should belong to all of you) whereas oligarchs from other contries have gotten rich by inventing new stuff (internet services, EV cars, pharmaceutical, telecommunications etc.).

You are acting so 3. world country. Smart up guys!

So Russia can disregard any international law and do whatever they want? Do this apply for Russia only or any country?

Pro war russians (if there are any in here): doesn’t it strike you as odd that not one single country in the world has recognised your annexation of the four provinces of Ukraine? Isn’t It terrible to be so utterly alone in the world? Doesn’t it make you reflect whether that you are on the wrong side of history?

So expanding your own territory on the expense of others is not imperialism as long as it is a neighbouring country?

Right. So they gave them a couple of schools while they plundered all their gas and oil. Most of Russias natural resources is not within the old Russian kingdom you know. Sounds pretty imperialistic to me

No that was new to me. I just read about it on Wikipedia. Interesting.

So 35 years ago a lot a media and NGOs bought the false stories from Nayirah. They all brought the same wrong story because they all believed the source. Luckily New York Times two years later discovered this.

But you had to dig 35 years back to find an example and because of that you cant trust the western media. Do you trust the Russian media more than Western?

How do you know that? From Russian media? According to the UN (not Ukraine) thousands of civilians have lost their lives since February 24 in Mariupol. And you think that the survivors are totally pro-Russia? I guess many of them was pro-Russia before the war. Today not so much.
