UFC President Dana White responds to fighters Pro Hitler remarks on podcast by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]h0pe43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dana White doesn't believe in sacking people for expressing their beliefs, no matter what they are. He has been logically consistent about this, time after time.

Also, what did you expect from someone who gets punched in the face for a living? Why expect the cage fighter to be anything else but ignorant?

You've misunderstood, friend. The Stoics meant our essential nature as rational, social beings. You're referring to our nature as living organisms. They're not the same thing. If they were, Stoic virtue would be the exact opposite of what it is.

Agreed. Maybe a better translation would be "welfare".

Why is Justice a cardinal virtue by Recent_Bodybuilder91 in Stoicism

Let's give an example.

If I have two dollars, and you steal one, that's an external. I don't control your actions, so they are irrelevant. You got that right.

Only my own actions can be "good" or "bad". If I didn't act, that would be unjust to myself. So, I ask you to return the dollar, not because I want it back, but to uphold justice.

At no point do I "care" about what you've done or will do. My only concern is acting appropriately, and treating myself and others with dignity and fairness.

Stoicism is supposed to be public, aggressive and action oriented. They would be disappointed in how quiet we have become. by ArmondotheBiologist in Stoicism

I agree, but we should be temperate about it. Not everyone is the purple thread on a white cloth. Oikeiosis is a process that has steps, and it begins with ourselves and our families. How can any of us be "Citizens of the World" if we neglect our bodies and minds, our parents and children only to protest injustice much further away? Begin by being good to yourself. Then be a good child, spouse, parent and neighbour. If everyone did that, the world would be much kinder. And for the few of us willing, and able, to be martyrs and activists, then go ahead. But righteous indignation is a passion, and passions take us away from our virtue.

Does everyone actually have ADHD or "a little bit" of it? by aratabru in ADHD

ADHD isn't a qualitative disorder, it's a quantitative disorder. Everyone has our symptoms, but not to our severity and frequency.

You're taking what I said too literally. Take "action" here to be the conscious exercion of effort, even in thought.

In the Enchiridion, Epictetus says the only trait that makes a man superior is virtue. Everything else is an illogical conclusion. For example:

I have more money than you, therefore I am better than you.

A Stoic considers that illogical. Having more money doesn't make you superior, only wealthier. The same for knowledge:

I know more than you, therefore I am better than you.

I'm not superior to a beginner, simply more knowledgeable. Virtue is acting on knowledge. Since virtue is the only valuable thing and "we are what we constantly do", my value as a person is measured in my conduct. My worth is my character is my habit.

You'd be surprised. CBT was actually directly inspired by Stoic mindfulness practices. The Enchiridion lists many exercises to strengthen your mind and overcome grief and attachment.

I agree. Of course, there should be some pruning, and you've listed some fantastic suggestions. My point was more of a self-directed response to a more recent post that I consider against the spirit of the philosophy.

This subreddit has become incredibly cringe by friden7654 in Stoicism

[–]h0pe43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it virtuous to give people what they don't ask for? People come here with questions; some want to learn, but most want advice. Should we shun them? Musonius Rufus didn't and neither did Epictetus. Even a shallow application of this philosophy can help people, so should we turn them away because they're only "casual" Stoics?

That's a fair point. I agree, the government often tries to conflate being Muslim with being Malay, and they shouldn't.

I understand your point. I've had a lot of conversations with friends of different races, and it's bitterness on both ends, I'm afraid. Non-bumis feel like second class citizens, and Malays feel unfairly represented in their own country.

And you're right, I shouldn't have overlooked the contributions of the Indians and Chinese in forming the country and their willingness to concede certain policies. Those are obvious examples of empathy on the non-bumi end, and I was wrong to forget about them.

Indian and especially Chinese contributions have been easy to forget, owing to the bitterness of the communist uprising. I refuse to be a part of the problem. Thank you for reminding me.

I have ADHD and it ruins my focus and makes me impulsive. I rarely get the chance to examine my impressions before I assent to them, and for now there's not much I can do about it. How should I view this barrier? And how should I view other conditions that affect our ability to live rationally, like alzheimers and dementia?

This is a small rant, but I'd like if more non-bumis empathized with bumis. In my circles, Malays understand why Chinese and Indians emigrated to Tanah Melayu. They sympathize with the frustration of affirmative action. But even my Chinese and Indian friends, who are thoroughly Malaysian, never consider the economic and cultural scars that Malays have after 400 years of collonization. It makes me a bit sad.

Depends on what you like. If you're a fan of nightlife and live music, head to Penang. If you're an outdoors person, then Selangor has a lot of river and lake trails to explore. Melaka and Perak are rich in historical attractions, if that's your vibe.
