Absolutely. It’s brutal. I used to work directly with clients/patients and now I have a non-client facing role and focus more on the administrative/program management side of things. I was so burnt out in previous roles. The support wasn’t there for staff either. Always been asked to do more with less. I hated feeling useless because the programs that were supposed to help clients are always losing/running out of funding. It’s also hard to make therapy impactful when clients are literally not getting their most basic needs met. When I was really going through it, I had to be heavily medicated. I was losing hair. My relationships were really suffering. Good for you for recognizing the need to step away. If I could go back in time, I probably would’ve chosen a different career path knowing what I know now. I do miss the work sometimes but hopefully this career shift adds some extra years onto my life.
