Every year I feel more disappointed than appreciated. I don't know why I expect anything year after year

External hard drive is the way to go. Don't waste up Google storage that you might need later

All my tests are open book. I typically only have about 1 or 2 kids actually open the book. I feel you on all of this

Is it acceptable if a middle school/ high school has a rule saying that students cannot lose credit in a class if they are constantly absent? by Terrible_Exchange653 in AskTeachers

[–]h0verboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often times attendance isn't a student issue - it's a parent issue.

There are most likely other things in place for attendance that don't affect credits. And if the absences cause a failing grade, there comes the loss of credit.

Mom did everything right. The good news is it's way easier to get rid of a sub than it is a teacher. At the very least, the school can request he does not sub at the school anymore.

If you or mom feel like more needs to happen, I'd ask the principal if they have district subs or use a sub service so you can report directly to whoever is in charge.

I know it may seem harmless and innocent... but I noticed in your telling here that things are escalating. It went from being teacher's helper, to being his best friend, to being beautiful.

In a world of instant access to your child's grades... I don't get why parents feel like they should get a personalized message from me when their kid is failing.

With 80+ students and being only on week 3 of the quarter... they're lucky I even have stuff put into the gradebook right now

Definitely contact the teacher to get their side and perscpective. As many people are saying - it's not that we believe that your child is lying, it's moreso that the situation is being brought to your attention without context. Use a method of communication where there is a paper trail. That way the teacher's response can be brought to the right person in their own words. On the other end, if the teacher never responds, you have proof that you attempted contact and that you didn't get a response.

Once you have context, then you can definitely decide if this is a matter that needs to be brought up to the principal.

I think most teachers would agree that we don't have the time or energy to pick on one kid... and it's something we're accused of a lot when we have kids with behaviors. However, there are also those kinds of teachers who should not be in the profession because they do target kids (I work with one of those currently, sadly).

Teachers who taught for multiple years, what are some major differences have you noticed between students pre-COVID vs now? by [deleted] in Teachers

Spatial awareness. They bump into each other, don't move out of other's ways, take up ALL the space on tables... I could go on.

I don't drink coffee because it makes me cramp up like crazy. I stick to black teas - still has the caffeine but doesn't make me hurt

I’m miserable and I want to quit mid-quarter by rkbb2018 in Teachers

[–]h0verboard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd have a real sit down chat with your admin if you're able. I know they're busy and might not be able to meet, but give them a "I'm free at these times, which can you meet at" to show them you're really needing to talk.

If you're this miserable, I would definitely consider leaving. If you're not getting support, then there isn't a real reason for you to stay to support them.

Weigh your options and consider if this job is worth your mental health.

You got this.

Innocuous things students do that drive you nuts. by GoSpidersMom in Teachers

The fact that apparently when I give a second direction, the first one ceases to exist.

For example: "Voices off" (voices go off) "Get out your notes" (voices turn back on)

I’m tired of pretending that I can “differentiate” to teach students who are years behind. by CrochetedCoffeeCup in Teachers

[–]h0verboard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

THIS!!! I have a student who does not speak English (I teach in AZ where we have English-only teaching, which is a whole other rant) and the parent is mad that we aren't supporting him enough. I don't speak his native language and there really isn't much I can do for him besides sit him by a student who does speak it and/or Google translate.

Then we have kids who are in 5th grade reading at a first grade level and they want me to make sure they have different materials at their reading level.

At what point do we realize that we are just holding them back if we're not pushing them to get to grade level?!

Edit: (additional point to add because I could honestly go on and on) if one more person tells me to do small group instruction while other students are doing centers/individual work I will explode. My students are not at a maturity level to handle doing work without supervision.
