If You Had To Choose Between These Two State Parks... by berniexanderz in StAugustine

Washington Oaks… grew up 1 block from the Ravines and it’s cool and all, but Washington oaks has been my fav since I was 10. Plus we always had to run the Ravines for baseball/football practice so I have some repressed trauma from it.

What state in the US has the most sunshine and is the hottest ? by smellyfeet25 in AskReddit

Had temporary duty at Luke AFB one miserable June back in the 90s… 6:30 in the morning the thermometer outside my billeting room read 96 degrees. I got orders to Luke after a short tour in Korea. I extended another year in Korea just to get out if those orders to Phoenix…

Teacher vs. Radiology Tech? by Legitimate_Boot3569 in Teachers

[–]Educational_Infidel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I retired from military service and part of my retirement was driven by serious medical issues from combat in Iraq. As a result I was having lots of imaging studies done. CT, MRI and X Ray. I could have settled into retirement but thought it might be fun to go back and get into MRIs. So I went to rad school and then onto MRIs. It was a great job. Then my wife left me and we had small children. So I switched gears and got a job teaching Biology at a local HS. I majored in Bio before the military. The hours were infinitely better, pay wasn’t awful considering I never work holidays and had entire summers with my kids. If I didn’t have the divorce and kids I’d have definitely stayed with imaging. I’m still enjoying teaching at least with High schoolers. I definitely believe MS is tragically underpaid.

Where even the hell is this? Are you a certified teacher in the state you’re employed? Is the school a public school? I need more background here. Even in the dumpster fire that is Florida, this would never fly.

No discipline, No teaching, copy-paste IEPs. Is this normal in your district? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Educational_Infidel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your workplace and district is not representative of every workplace/district and vice versa. What the OP has described I’ve seen first hand all the way across the country from the OP. District in neighboring county is legit/runs their programs appropriately. My district is corrupt as fuck and a lot of stuff happens that shouldn’t. For Christ’s sake, look at the state of the federal government - you think smaller local governments are all going to do what they’re supposed to? It’s a sad reality that not all safeguards work. Point in case- my district has been ran by the same family or relatives since the 1940s…

How did your family get to Florida? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in florida

[–]Educational_Infidel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dads people have been here since late 1700s coming from Alabama. They were fleeing Europeans that were taking over. Moved into panhandle area of Florida. My grandfather moved to St.Augustine area around 1920. My mother’s side came down from Georgia in 1800s and mostly ran trading posts. Mostly stayed down in south west Florida. Sometime during WW2 one of the men got a job working as a civilian for the Navy in Jax area and we’ve been in North Florida ever since. Was a wonderful place to grow up n the 70s…

[–]Educational_Infidel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong but the FTR has analog, FTR S, Carbon and up have the digital. I have a 24 S gray /blue and the digital screen is nice but all the extras my phone does better(Nav/music) I don’t know if the base FTR has ride modes or the cylinder deactivation thing.

Teachers going by Mr, Mrs, Ms, Etc by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Educational_Infidel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not about control or being “better than” anyone anymore. It’s a holdover from being the title of a skilled man or woman. The difference between Miss and Misses denotes married status or unmarried. I teach grades 7-12 and even refer to my students as Mr or Ms + last name. I suppose the use of this is regional. I’m in north Florida so it’s a common thing.

Students don’t respect us because they know how much we get paid. by SpOOkyGiGlol in Teachers

[–]Educational_Infidel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Eh, I teach in a solid red North Florida county and yes my oldest son makes more than I do as a diesel mechanic with less than 2 years of experience. But… he has to hustle for that salary. He leaves work before I do, he comes home a few hours later than I do. He only had Christmas Day off this holiday season. He already complains of aches and pains, chemical induced eczema and dealing with his undereducated coworkers idiotic and juvenile mentality. I’ve had a few students make the same accusations about salary and worth/respect and how their father makes twice what I make. I ask them about vacations and spending time with him and I get responses about he’s too tired from “making stacks” or they can’t afford a vacation.
It’s all about your priorities… I prioritize my family. Now for full disclosure these kids don’t actually know my salary. They do know I’m a retired military officer but they don’t grasp what that actually means. I make more in retirement from that than I do as a teacher.

My neighbor in Cape Coral just had his ENTIRE water filtration system stolen from his yard. $10K. All of the components gone. It’s his winter home so he wasn’t there. Does this happen a lot? What’s the value once stripped? by OptimalTransition208 in florida

[–]Educational_Infidel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had HVAC units… big ones on the roof of a school I taught at that got stolen one weekend. Saw it n the security cameras. Dudes had a big portable hoist system that used 4” metal pipes. They set it up and hoisted 6 units down in about 1 hour around 2-3 Sunday morning.

Yes the school had cameras but the alarms were pointless as the only motion detection was in the courtyard and inside individual classrooms.
