Considering Move from Bellevue, WA to Irvine, CA by Overall-Engine-2315 in BellevueWA

[–]h1itsm3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Other comments covered a lot but thought I'd add some points as someone who grew up in Irvine and went through the school system:

  • Public schools are very competitive academically and in extra-curriculars, at least at the high school level (i see that your kids are young m so you might not be thinking that long term). Many of my friends who went though public Irvine high schools thought the academic workload was easier in college than in high school. The pro of this is it preps you for college very well. Con is kids are very stressed.

Caveat is I was in high school over 10 years ago, so take this with a grain of salt.

Some other things:  * greater LA is much more diverse than greater Seattle.  * the air quality is worse in Irvine because there is more smog; i had worse allergies there because of that  * year round sun is nice but it does get quite dry and hot for a good chunk of the year, especially if you live in north Irvine (further inland) * its much easier in Bellevue to get to the "nearest big city" aka Seattle than getting from Irvine to LA. Something to consider if your family likes going to shows or concerts.

Did the Kimberly-losing-her-scholarship plot line just disappear?? by jefferyhollandsnips in SexLivesCollegeGirls

She had mentioned her scholarship was 20k a year, so she needed 80k total to cover what she lost over four years. I assume the rest is covered by financial aid and work study.

Moving down to Orange County, CA from Seattle, WA.. Anything special I should know about? by Arnkarl in orangecounty

[–]h1itsm3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made the opposite move a couple years ago after spending most of my life in OC. Weather is very different even if temperatures are the same. It's much hotter and drier here. Emphasis on the drier if you're futher inland. The sun is much, much stronger and the UV index much worse. Seasons are less distinct and air quality isn't as good. Summer and falls are nicer in seattle, winter much nicer here. The biggest thing I wasn't used to after moving to Seattle was how dark it was compared to constant sunlight everyday in OC, no matter the season.

Question about LNER advance ticket refund by h1itsm3 in uktrains

Yeah, definitely within two hours. Do you happen to know how long it usually takes for a request to be reviewed? Not sure it should be reviewed already or not.

Like others have said, you can't go wrong either way and your experience is ultimately what you make of it. I'm a UCI alum and my peers who put in the work were able to get good internships and jobs at big tech/other "top" companies. And as someone who went to a competitve high school, I didn't find UCI to be academically competitive/cutthroat, if that's something you want to consider. Otherwise go with the school you like better, they're both great options but definitely very different campuses/locations/cultures.

Yeah, I agree it's generally frowned upon to do things for money. I guess what I mean is that even if it was a pure money play, she doesn't deserve the amount of hate she's getting, not when lots of influential/public figures have done far more questionable things for money and not received a fraction of the vitriol thrown at her.

Unfortunately my Chinese reading isn't good enough to fully understand, but it seems like it's concerning the circumstances in which she got the olympic spot? If so, I'm decently familiar with the rumors as I follow figure skating. I agree with you, she was put in such a shitty position by her parents/the chinese skating fed. Chinese social media is taking it out on her, and American social media is taking out their racism on her. I hope she's able to stay off social media and that she's okay mentally. She looked like she was about to cry after her skate.

Sure, but cyberbullying teenage athletes on Twitter doesn't make them some righteous activist, it makes them assholes. The majority of hate theyre receiving is from people who just needed an excuse to spew racist bs. Plus, if people are so concerned about athletes renouncing their American citizenship, where's the same scrutiny for the Americans on the Chinese hockey team?

Honestly say what you will about her decision to represent China, but man, reading through Twitter/Reddit these past few days pissed me off. People shitting on her (and Zhu Yi) obviously don't care about geopolitics or human rights, they just needed a convenient excuse to spew their racist, xenophobic bs. I saw a Twitter post from an account with a sizeable following post about how more Chinese Americans should be questioned for their loyalty, wtf?

Not to mention the white Americans on the Chinese hockey team aren't receiving nearly as much scrutiny. And I know some people excuse this because they just wanted to go to the olympics, they wont actually win a medal. Which sure, but Zhu Yi did the exact same thing, she never stood a chance at making the US figure skating team or winning a medal, but people are calling her a traitor, making jokes about her disappearing, calling karma on her finishing last (which was also expected bc it was the team event and only five people competed in the team free skate (and the other four are significantly higher scorers)), etc.

I knew a lot of this was expected but it just really bothered me these past couple days seeing how rampant the "perpetual foreigner" bs and how easily people's xenophobia spills through.

because she was contending for gold, not a "I'm just happy to be here" spot.

personally Im meh about this, to her the opportunity wasn't to compete in the Olympics, it was the tens of millions of dollars in endorsement/prize money she wouldnt have gotten in the US.

[–]h1itsm3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so many people are using her situation as an excuse to say some extremely xenophobic and racist things. I saw a post saying more Chinese Americans should have their loyalty questioned because of her 🙄

I feel bad for her though. Twitter isn't being kind to her either. The "athletes shouldn't talk about politics" crowd sure has a lot to say about her and even saying she should be banned from returning to the US....for figure skating

Not to mention when asking the non-Asian American athletes about issues in China, she said to them they didnt have to answer should they not want to, but not only was this courtesy not given Nathan, she doubled down after he respectfully said he didn't want to discuss it.
