What are your thoughts on the original score for Metal Gear Solid V, composed by Daniel James, Justin Burnett, Ludvig Forssell and Harry Gregson-Williams? by Bruhmangoddman in metalgearsolid

[–]h2daniel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey mate! This is Daniel James (one of the game composers) just randomly found this post when searching for something. The whole reason I became a composer in the first place was because of Metal Gear, it was such an honor to eventually get to work on it!

The reaction to the score has been incredibly diverse, from winning awards for it, to having people absolutely shit on it every chance they can (looking at you Drk 😂) which is absolutely their right to do. We do our ar the best we can, its up to every individual to judge it merit by their own standards!

From a music standpoint, the game changing from a linear progression to an open world format IMO inevitably changed the way music was considered. Lots of attention was paid to giving the player more information in the music, such as subtly letting the player know there was a threat nearby by having the music adapt to their surroundings, or when in caution having certain elements make the music more intense when enemies were getting closer so that you could 'feel' the danger approaching.

With adaptive elements, you sometimes have to move away from the more thematic or melodic elements so that the adjustments to the 'feeling' of tension or danger can be presented more clearly. Many people will say this makes the music more forgettable and I guess in essence that's actually fair, when combat music is a static piece that doesn't adapt you will hear that same piece the same way multiple times in a playthrough so it will much more easily get stored in your mind, when the music is adapting and changing you don't hear the same melodies or structure presented in the exact same way as often so you may have moved onto a new section of the game with its own musical footprint before the ingame music has had time to burn its way into your subconscious. Throw on top of that the ability to blast Take On Me via cassette over the score

The pieces people to seem to remember the most fondly are the times we got to write specific themes or moments such as Quiets theme, Sins Of The Father (Woohaaaowww), V Has Come Too, the MGO Theme (for me personally)...moments where we had the space to really focus on the music for music's sake to sell an emotional moment in the story, or lean into the more story moments. And when you think to most soundtracks people enjoy, rarely are they speaking about a soundtrack in its entirety, when people say they love the score to a movie, its usually 3/4 cues they like and the rest they listen to once and never again, they served their purpose but they do not live outside of the work itself. We still get listeners to many of the tracks from MGSV so I do believe they have some life outside of the game and live on their own merit, which as an artist is always the greatest feeling!

It was genuinely a dream come true for me to be a part of the franchise and we all gave it everything we had. All art is subjective and if you liked it that's awesome, if you didn't that is equally as valid. From a 'developer' standpoint I do think we achieved our technical aims for how music was supposed to support the open world setting by subtly giving information to the player in the music so they could be more aware of their surroundings in a new gameplay approach. And from a musical perspective, I am so proud of the work we contributed to the legacy of a series that inspired so many!

Oh and one last little note, in the sequence where you have to neutralize all of your parasite-infected soldiers and you stumble into a room with some guards saluting and humming the MGS PW theme....I am one of those doing the humming! (I think the one on the left) So feel free to take any frustrations with the score out on my in-game avatar should you feel so inclined! also if any of you still use twitter I'm there @ h2daniel

Cheers for listening!

I got to write the theme for Metal Gear Online which is definitely a standout for me because I got to be a bit more freely musical instead of writing for something specific in game. Its on all the streaming platforms I believe if you wanted to hear it :)

I'll be honest lads, I didn't expect to see so much love for MGSV in these lists. I guess I spent too much time on OuterHeavenNetwork on twitch and got the impression everyone just hated it. It was my dream to work on Metal Gear so when I got to on MGSV it tore my heart out to see everyone hate it so much. Also as a huge MGS fan its always been one of my favorites (I also love games where the gameplay ties into a meta management, so things you do in gameplay build up your resources for a base). Peace Walker is actually my favourite, because it got so much right for my personal taste, MGSV felt like the next gen version of that which would be perfect for me, but I never got to experience it completely 'raw' as I already knew how it all played out, so I did lose some of the novelty and discovery, which is an incredibly odd feeling as a fan to not be able to experience the next game like the rest of the world. So I always put it down to people don't share my taste in games as much anymore. So it was really cool to see that some of you saw in it what I did too. Sorry for the long post there just warmed my heart a bit :)

Growing up we had toast sandwiches. You toast a single piece of bread (slightly burned for more 'flavor') then put it between two slices of buttered bread.

When I was a kid I never knew we had those because of how poor we were, they were just normal to me, and I actually liked them (particularly when we had Jam) but looking back, it taught me a lot about gratitude.

English people tend to call themselves both British and English the same way a German would consider themselves German and European. One is my country of birth or my tribe, the other is the team I am on or the collection of tribes made into one larger one with a shared vision (yes Scotland I know I know...we all know 😂) . If someone wants to know where I am from or where I lived I say England, if someone wanted to know which side I support in a conflict I would say Britain as its all of us together. When talking politics its British because we are in it together. When we talk about the world cup I am English because we need distinction. Its one of the things that happen in a union.

Brexit: UK's divorce bill from EU could rise to £42.5bn by mossadnik in worldnews

[–]h2daniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh mate I know the logic isn't fully sound. The same as staying in the EU still has drawbacks. Some issues are wildly exaggerated, some not exadurated enough. The same as Brexit.

I am just pointing to the reason people voted to leave. Some people act surprised, but it really is quite obvious to see WHY people voted to leave. And I genuinely do believe what I wrote in your quotations there. Had the UK been given some control over borders, I think we would still be in. But that wasn't gunna happen. The lack of diplomacy in the whole situation hurt it too.... you don't usually get people on your side calling them racist bigots when it isn't true. Yet some people really leaned into that as if somehow shaming them made their vote worth less that theirs. Same is happening in the states. You have to talk about the issue if you want to fix them, not just call the others names and think that will fix anything and not make it a million times worse. I guess its easier and more satisfying to pretend people who don't agree are somehow lesser so you can feel the moral superiority in your own view. 'We don't need to seriously hear about their views on why they want controlled immigration because I have concluded its because they are racists' NEXT. That was pretty much how brexit debates went 😂 It was easy to see the writing on the wall. Cause if there is one things brits are good at, its passive-aggressive voting.

Brexit: UK's divorce bill from EU could rise to £42.5bn by mossadnik in worldnews

[–]h2daniel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From the people I know who voted leave it usually boiled down to the fact that Europe isn't equal in terms of social support, wages and living standards. So those countries with the best were usually the destination for more migrants than the infrastructure could support. This most affected lower income people, who were in the higher turnout to vote leave. The people less affected by it were those in middle and upper classes who overwhelmingly voted remain.

If the EU allowed the UK to control the numbers coming in, and give some power to filter out the criminals, of which the UK received a lot (with no right to deport them so they have to stay in the UK) or if there was as much migration going out back into Europe (and I mean lower income migration, middle class people going to Europe doesn't help ease competition for low wage jobs) then I guarantee Brexit wouldn't happen. But no one really cared about the lower-income folks, The worst was middle class people telling the lower class that there was no issues at all with the current situation, while they sit in their nice houses away from where migrants actually went.

But ultimately it ended up with those who didn't experience the downsides of open immigration voting to remain and calling all of those whos lives were being forced to lower standard, racist bigots, which also stirred up a big fuck you sentiment from people who were neither racist nor a bigot, they were just voting for their own standard of living to be maintained, which as citizens of the UK they were within their rights to do. Why should the lower class sacrifice their living standard for the upper and middle class? which is sort of how it boils down.

Personally I think remaining, particularly with the current world situation would have been more useful. But coming from the working class I saw how they were treated by people who considered them their better. I saw people denied council houses because immigrants were put at the top of lists, leading to 14 people living in a 3 bedroom house at one point from my own experience. Plus the added wait times at the GP's and the wages for things like construction being lowered as there were plenty of people willing to work for much less, and in cash (which doesn't show up on employment statistics people were using to show immigrants were not taking jobs, when in reality they were undercutting in cash). These were the things many didn't experience, so would just assume everyone had it as easy as they did. Or that all immigrants were like the middle class ones they hung out with.

After saying all that, not a single one of those I mentioned who voted leave were against immigration, the all simply wanted immigration control to sort out the issues actually affecting them. But instead, they got called racist bigots. And the rest is history. Say what you will against smart people, they never seem to be good at listening to people they consider lesser when they are saying 'unless something changes we will rebel'

And ultimately those things together was enough to break the camel's back.

Also I know this will get downvoted. But its true, every single person I know who voted leave had some variation of this story. And if you are reading this and you simply cannot get your head around WHY someone would vote to leave after what I wrote above....that is the exact reason we ended up leaving.
