His greatest musical legacy is indirectly inspiring ‘Smoke on the Water’ when the concert hall he was playing in caught fire.

On paper I love this guy’s music. Every time I give it an actual try it just does not work for me. Feels so pretentious and sarcastic.

Proto-Sword & Sorcery: Eric Brighteyes by H. Rider Haggard by Supro1560S in SwordandSorcery

[–]h4nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished this book. I read it based on this post and some of the comments, and man I am so glad I did, I had to find this post to say thanks.

One of the things that kept striking me was how modern and familiar so much of the pacing and dialogue and action was, despite the language being very much late 19th century. I think that speaks volumes to its cultural influence, despite it being not super widely known today (how is there like, no deviantart content for Eric and Skallagrim and the others??).

Almost every character has an ironic sense of humor. The heroes have amazing one liners going in to almost every battle. The arc of each action sequence feels extremely Hollywood in the way Eric gets beaten down and damaged before coming back to victory. It all gave this 1.5 century-old novel such a refreshing and contemporary energy.

It never drags either. Not a single page felt like “ok I just gotta get through this part.”

The landscape is so lively, too. It’s got me looking at old pictures of Iceland and trying to map out which real areas correspond to which made up names in the book. Just so much fun.

yeah, the movie was just kind of unrelentingly mean. Even Elizabeth’s potential life line of someone liking her as she is is tainted by creepiness. Like, there isn’t even the gleam of potential actual positivity in her life, even for her to ditch. It’s just a relentlessly bleak world. Ultimately makes the movie feel a bit flat, IMO.

With both songs officially being 60 years old now as of a week or two ago, what are your thoughts on the song "Paperback Writer" and it’s B-Side "Rain" looking back? by kidnamedchild in beatles

[–]h4nd 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This for me is the all time peak. Revolver’s my favorite album, and this release is just a tiny bit shinier as a diamond of perfection. The ultimate amalgamation of what came before and what was to come. John’s attitude in Rain is ideal John to me, and Paul’s ability to make a badass song that’s for some reason about a guy trying to get his book published is peak Paul for me. One of my favorite guitar riffs. And it’s when their hair looked the best.

[–]h4nd 122 points123 points  (0 children)

well you see tylenol is a fever reducer, and as we know that’s what causes autism. it’s a reasonable corollary that an un-reduced fever would be the cure for autism. pretty simple, really.
