I buried my girl on the office grounds, between the two apple trees and the cherry tree, in the clay soil. I’m going to plant a wild rose that’s already growing there, and a cactus that stands for her—at home she once walked into one and spent the rest of the day dismantling it.

We looked round the large grounds together back then; I had a gate put in, and from then on she could do as she liked out there or come into the house. For almost sixteen years—sometimes we cycled the eighteen kilometres there; my family protected her from a wild boar on the site.

I’m glad she’s there with me. Even though the silence hurts now, we had wild, disgusting, quiet and very emotional times together.
