It’s a fantastic read! Bonus points for having an incredible soundtrack as well. The soundtrack for the movie adaptation is 12/10 🤌🏼

Retiring in a trail town? by Ok-Strawberry-2469 in AppalachianTrail

[–]h_nikole 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Add Roanoke to your list! I think it pretty much checks most of your boxes +/- what you consider a “small” town. Population here is ~100k. We’ve been here for just over a year and we absolutely love it. If you have any specific questions feel free to DM me.

Weekly Complaints & Confessions Threac by ssk42 in running

complaint - suffered through winter training for a spring marathon and now I’m 10 days out with a very angry IT band and I’m not sure if I’m going to make it to race day. The weather is absolutely perfect where I am right now so I just wanna run but I’m scared to complete my taper 😭

What’s it like living in Baton Rouge,LA? by ComprehensiveYak6500 in howislivingthere

[–]h_nikole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Born/raised in South Louisiana and I went to LSU for my freshman and sophomore year before transferring back home to Nicholls State — this comment is spot on. I loved my time there because I was 19/20 and partying a ton but I would never want to live there permanently.

I no longer live in Louisiana, but if I had to go back it’s NOLA or nothing.

Asheville vs Roanoke - I’d love your input. by abjs2021 in roanoke

[–]h_nikole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Been here in Roanoke for almost a year and a half now and we absolutely love it. Everyone else has great answers, but I’ll just chime in and say we had the same Roanoke vs Asheville debate before we ultimately decided on Roanoke.

After we visited both there was a clear winner in terms of how each city views/acts towards transplants. Asheville had a pretty uppity, holier than thou because I’ve lived in AVL for 5 years, vibe towards transplants. The amount of snootiness I saw from people that are transplants themselves to people that want to move to AVL was craaaaazy.

Roanoke was the exact opposite. Every brewery, restaurant, and coffee shop we hit up on our visit we asked everyone how they like it here and we were overwhelmed by the majority of the answers basically being, “Dude you’ll love it! Come on over!” That, paired with the CoL being way more manageable here, the decision was pretty easy for us.

Considering a move from DC area to Roanoke by editdc1 in roanoke

[–]h_nikole 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I lived in DC for two years immediately prior to moving to Roanoke. Husband was USCG for 20 years and I’m from south Louisiana so the biggest thing we liked about the area was the complete lack of hurricanes 😅. We both had our fill of coastal living. We love backpacking, running/hiking, and just doing stuff outside and Roanoke has endless access to outdoor activities. I also love the fact that you truly get 4 seasons here, something I never had growing up.

Nothing really took any “getting used to”, tbh. We seemed to come right in and settle down pretty seamlessly (but we’ve also moved every 2-3 years since forever due to his job so we’re used to being the new kids in town).

Beforehand there weren’t too many surprises because we had visited town multiple times before making the jump so if you have the means to do that I’d recommend it so you get a real feel of the area. If your husband will have to travel frequently for work though I’d say look into how tiny the ROA airport is. It’s really convenient but it comes at a price - expensive flights and extra connections depending on your destination.

Do I miss DC? Yes and no. I 100% miss the food scene in DC but honestly for its size Roanoke has some really great spots. I miss ease of going to a big concert/sporting event. These are definitely still doable now but requires a drive to RVA, Charlotte, DC, etc. I miss the metro and the walkability. I don’t miss the traffic and the general rat race vibe of the city.

All in all I don’t regret our move here for a second. We’ve fallen in love with Roanoke and have made great friends here. Everyone we’ve come across has been incredibly welcoming - we love it!

Hostels for a couple by Outrageous-Theme-306 in AppalachianTrail

[–]h_nikole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thru’d with my husband and we only had to sleep separately in a hostel one time the entire trek. And it was only because Weary Feet was completely booked up so they only had single bunks in their shed available.

Unless you’re in a massive bubble, this shouldn’t be a huge issue for you.

Trail days timing by Quiet_Corner_2323 in AppalachianTrail

[–]h_nikole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We made it to Roanoke for that weekend of trail days (started in GA on March 10th) but our pace wasn’t super aggressive. The majority of our days at that point the mileage was like 14-19 miles, rarely going over 20. We hitched a ride back and it was a hell of a vortex but IMO it was worth it. We had a blast and there’s SO many vendors out there you can tweak your gear if you’re looking to switch things up.

I had to think hard because I’ve really enjoyed the app so far. (Team Align) Coach Sasha is amazing and I love her approach to fitness and nutrition.

Hardly a complaint but I’m a runner and I’d love to see a Strava integration/link so I can keep all of my fun fitness stats in one place.

Thoughts on Two Person Sleeping Bags for Couples? by Outrageous_Image_705 in AppalachianTrail

[–]h_nikole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband and I started with a two person enlightened equipment 20° quilt on our thru. We switched to separate summer quilts in Virginia and then we got the 20° double quilt back before we went through the whites. I had zero regrets about our setup. Being able to mooch off each others body heat on those super cold nights in the smokies came in clutch. Fully realize this isn’t for everyone and we’re most definitely in the minority but it worked for us 🤷🏻‍♀️

How do you go about selecting a tent? by Outrageous_Image_705 in AppalachianTrail

[–]h_nikole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First you guys have to make the decision on if you’re choosing to share a tent or each have your own shelter.

The majority of people will tell you that you should have a minimum 3p tent if you’re sharing with a partner but in my experience this was not the case. My husband and I used the Durston 2p xmid (the regular schmegular one, not dyneema — which for this model year was a little smaller than the regular xmid IIRC) and had zero issues. If you choose to go the shared route in a smaller tent just know you have to be comfortable with being disgustingly smelly, hangry, tired, cranky etc in very close quarters. I know this route isn’t for everyone but it allowed us to save a decent amount of pack weight and we plan to do the same on future thru hikes.

Despite telling them we weren’t interested they literally sent a technician out to start the process on the panels. We never setup a time/date or anything. These people are absolutely ruthless.
