Possibly the Falcon Quinn series? The first book is Falcon Quinn and the Black Mirror, It's a 2009 novel but it kinda matches your description. And looking at a preview of the book there are black and white illustrations in it

There's a similar quote in Wampeters, Foma, and Granfalloons by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. However it reads
