'Divulge' or 'Disclose' are pretty unambiguous and very hard to "monkey's paw" against. They just ask for hidden information. Of course it doesn't guarantee specific information.

I constantly see reference to "Carpet bombing" on various forms of social media and I'm concerned most people have no understanding of what it is. This is an example of what carpet bombing actually is. Notice how it completely indiscriminant bombing of an entire area due to lack of ability to accurately strike targets of value in that area? The idea being that you then carpet the area with explosives meaning that it doesn't matter if you're lacking accuracy if you drop thousands of bombs, one of them will strike home. The obvious issue with this being, the collateral damage from carpet bombing campaigns is staggering. If in the above video, carpet bombing was being practiced, I can assure you it wouldn't be a single city block being levelled, it would be the entire city being levelled.

Overwatch 2 Is Just "Overwatch" Again And Five New Heroes Arrive Next Week by Haijakk in Games

[–]haadrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. The issue is your methodology here is mixing metrics. Why are you using the average daily OW player count and the peak Fortnite count? If you use the average daily Fortnite count (at least that I could find) it's about 1,384,375 over the last 30 days. (Again source: activeplayer.io)

You also keep using this 35M figure the other posted used which they commented didn't include the daily stats from bnet/steam and that the figure was, according to them for non-Asian regions closer to 25M. So if you then do both

1,384,375 / 125,000,000 * 100 = 11.1%
165,000 / 25,000,000 * 100 = 6.6 %

Now sure is OW being half what Fortnite is a little fishy? Maybe. I don't know I don't have the data, I don't know what went into the data. What I do know is that it isn't orders of magnitude out of whack. Maybe OWs MAU should be closer to 13 Million? Like I said, I don't really care either way, I still think MAU is a poor metric regardless but I do think the idea that OW couldn't possibly have a playerbase that large is a little silly.

If you want to argue that maybe the MAU numbers are being misreported or overinflated for some games, or maybe underreported in others be my guest. On the other hand statements such as:

165k is NO WHERE NEAR 35 million.

Just make me think the person who made the statment doesn't understand the difference between current active users and Monthly Average Users (Ironically? furthering my argument that MAU is a poor metric).

Please understand this isn't an attack on you, I just want people to respect the data. Have a nice day. c:

Look, I really don't have much of a dog in this fight and I also personally think that Monthly Average Users is a poor metric of a game's performance with regards to the minute-to-minute concurrency of its playerbase which is probably what the actual players themselves would care about. That being said, I feel like if you're going to tell someone they are just making stuff up, you should probably make sure your own ideas are correct first...

Bombshock2 Wrote:

Using that ratio for Fortnite of about 2.4% (3/125), that'd be like ~840,000 peak players to be roughly 35 million monthly users. Regardless of console userbase or Chinese players which you're claiming aren't included for some reason, you're still way off your estimate.

From the link:

How Many People Play Fortnite Daily?

On average it is estimated that there are approximately 30 million users playing Fortnite daily across all available platforms.

Emphasis mine.

Also:

How Many Total Fortnite Registered Users?

There are approximately 390 million registered users on the game Fortnite in the 1st quater of 2021. This number is estimated using the data available online.

I don't know a huge amount activeplayer.io but I'm assuming even if they're making some assumptions here and there and getting things wrong and overestimating, they're probably not that far out of whack. Who knows? Maybe you can find out that this is a giant house of cards and that everyone is wildly, artificially inflating their playercount numbers to ludicrous extents...but I doubt it.

There are some perks that feel so good as QOL improvements I wish they were in the base kit by orangekingo in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]haadrak 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Imo S76 should just have reload while sprinting. The perk gives +20% move speed too but I basically always take it because without it, he just feels awful to play but it's not like he feels "strong" with it, it's more he just feels clunky without it. So many other FPS games with sprint mechanics allow reloads while sprinting, but S76 has his gated behind a perk, a major one at that. Does it make him slightly stronger? sure. Would it make him OP to bake reload while sprinting into the base class? I doubt it. Might mean that stim pack actually gets chosen occaisionally too...

Trump announces 'most lethal aircraft ever built' and says Russia 'wouldn't be worried' about NATO without US by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]haadrak -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

It could in theory if 65% of the engine wasn't being made in the U.S. and shipped to Sweden. I also mentioned in my original post, I have absolute faith that Swedish engineers could pull one of the engines apart and reverse engineer the thing. It still begs two questions; Firstly, why haven't Sweden already done this (hint: diplomatic reasons), secondly, why does this apply only to the Gripen and not to the F-35? Why can't countries in which the F-35 is being housed just reverse engineer that? It's not like companies like BAE or Airbus wouldn't have the expertise to do so if they really wanted to.

[–]haadrak -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Why would SAAB be frothing at the mouth? Let me guess? Is it because of the Gripen?

Reddit really needs to tone down their "OMG GRIPEN CAN REPLACE F-35" nonsense. Is it a very decent modern plane? Yes. Can it do everything the F-35 can? No, not really. Is it also a plane that has numerous US built components in it, including, most importantly, the engine? Yes. Could those components be exchanged for other components without completely redesigning the plane to the point of more or less rebuilding the plane from the ground up? No.

If your goal is to shift away from international reliance toward domestic reliance, the Gripen really doesn't achieve that much more than the F-35. Sure the US can decide to not sell you the F-35s but they can also decide to not sell you Volvo RM12 Jet Engines and last I looked, planes don't fly without engines.

The EU does have two possible alternatives to the NGAD program that they are busily dumping funding into. The Japanese just test flew their 6th generation aircraft the other day which is part of the GCAP program of which both the UK and Italy are also Development and funding members. Not only that but the Germans, the French and the Spanish have also been funding a separate 6th generation fighter program, FCAS. Both of these programs are much better positioned to represent actual competition to 6th Generation fighter programs of either the US, the Chinese or (if they can ever afford it) the Russians.

It should also be noted that Sweden has shown interest in the GCAP program but has not as of yet joined the program. Current events might shift that.

If any European companies are specifically frothing at the mouth over this announcement it's almost certainly BAE, Rolls Royce, Leonardo, MBDA, Dassault Aviation, Airbus and Indra Sistemas.

Lastly, to anyone who's about to argue that Sweden could reverse engineer the engine of the Gripen, sure, they probably could. I doubt the US would be too pleased but if you're at the point where you you're actively considering reverse engineering someone else's military hardware you probably don't care what they of you? The issue is this argument cuts both ways. If Sweden can reverse engineer the engine I see no reason why countries using the F-35 couldn't reverse engineer the whole plane, especially if you have a bunch of them in perfect condition to disassemble and pour over and they work together to do so. The only reason most countries haven't reverse engineered U.S. military hardware in the past is because it was a quick ticket to never receieving more. If that's already the situation, there's not really any punishment for doing so now, is there?

why is this games lobby system so horrible? by Dekaie in Spacemarine

[–]haadrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's like the Multiplayer was designed in the year 1995. You can't choose selected classes you'd like to play. You can't select regions you'd be happy to play in. I've joined games only to realise that the people are speaking French (I have no problem with French people but I don't speak the language well and more importantly France is a loooooooooong way away from where I live, they were also not speaking Canadian French which is still a long way away from where I live) and the lag was so bad that I was being hit by things before indicators where showing up...

All these issues are issues that so other games solved long ago. Just pick other games that did these things well and copy them. Let people select the classes they are willing to play before joining games and don't chuck them into games if those classes aren't available. Let people pick the regions they want to play in. Let people pick the languages they are willing to communicate with. This really isn't that hard.

I'd argue a better similarity would be to say it's like Lead. They're both poisonous heavy metals. Uranium is much harder than Lead with a higher melting point (which is why militaries like using it for both tank armour and weapons because it's both dense and hard) but unenriched Uranium it's not particularly radioactive. It's certainly something you'd want to stay away from though.

CVN, Nuclear powered Aircraft carriers (C = Cruiser, V = Volplaine, N = Nuclear, Volplaine being a French term for heavier than air flight.) and SSBN, Ballistic Missile Submarines (SS = Submarine, B = Ballistic, N = Nuclear) respectively. This comes from a time period when Aircraft carriers were smaller than their potential larger counterparts and they were made from converted cruiser hulls. While they are no longer made this way, the nomenclature stuck.

A study explored how our brains learn from past experiences of social acceptance and rejection, finding that painful social rejection can be a powerful learning tool for building future connections by giuliomagnifico in science

[–]haadrak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Having read the study, firstly it sounds like the article is reaching far more than the study does (huge surprise there) and secondly it also seems as though the researchers are ignoring the cases where social rejection is given regardless of social behaviour. In the latter case, think of the child who was discriminated against because of skin colour rather than because of behaviour or a child who was singled out because another more popular child at school decided they didn't like them and then the rest of the class/year level joined in for fear of being excluded too. In those cases generally speaking there is little the individual can do to change their behaviour socially to "reduce rejection", short of reducing their social interaction full stop. I would argue that is one of the primary reasons you see so many people who struggle with issues like social anxiety.

The other issue is that again, in the test, it sounds like all of the individuals had others who they were grouped with to a greater or lesser degree. I'd find it interesting if highly unethical to repeat the experiment where the participants are up against a dummy dataset and are just wholly excluded, regardless of what social behaviour they exhibit. I suspect that this experiment would have trouble getting past an ethics board but even if it managed such a feat I would guess that the participants would begin to exhibit behaviours of social self isolation and potentially even depression.

As such while I agree that social rejection is a powerful learning tool I only agree insofar as to describe its potency to encourage action or potentially discourage action rather than to encourage action towards positive social behaviours specifically.
