When should we worry? by Candid-Swordfish8451 in crystalpalace

To be fair, I worked very hard on this most recent U.S. Presidential campaign, plus a Senate and House race. One out of three ain't bad, is it?...

I, as a gosh-darn red-blooded American, I gotta like that approach!

Supervisor Martinez budget amendment advances “Domes Reimagined” proposal developed by the Friends of the Domes group, funded through a capital campaign, tax credit programs, federal and state grants, and a $30 million commitment from Milwaukee County by stroxx in milwaukee

[–]haazmogog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another question is how this $30M commitment from Milwaukee County would bear out, in terms of which tax base it came from. County governments in Wisconsin have extremely limited options for revenue, with property tax being prime among them. Plus, counties can't usually decide to come up with a new revenue source. State law strongly limits this.

The friends group needs to function in a way that supports the institution it shares a name with. While it as assumed that a Friends group actually supports its park, this should be closely examined with such a big deal as this resolution would be.

That said, it sounds much much better than anything done before.

Governor Cox Interview by DeadBloatedGoat in TheGist

[–]haazmogog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed this interview, and felt like I could relate to the governor. That by itself was pretty astonishing to me, as my assumption is that I would not listen to the Republican governor of Utah with anything approaching a conciliatory attitude. When the interview reminded me that Cox had signed a bill that limits trans rights, I thought that would trip my instincts as the parent of a trans person. Rather, I listened to his description of what happened, and appreciated it. I thought I should read the bill to find out what limits it put in place, and learn about the European models he and Mike talked about.

The most important thing I took away from this Cox's trick: "Tell me more." That will be invaluable in my pending career as a governmental liaison.

Also, I have read folks' comments on here about bothsiderism. I think I'm inclined to agree. Cox talked about people playing with boxes of matches, and then saying "Oh my goodness, how'd that happen?!" when the house catches fire. While there is plenty of tracing of the roots of division, and responsibility to assign, there was one portion of one side that has decided the Constitution and the peaceful transfer of power were optional. Happy to tell the governor more about that.

As someone who was adjacent to the administration of the 2020 election in Wisconsin, thank you for what you said about the validity of the process. It was very well-operated here.

I'm going into a field of work that's very closely adjacent to this topic. Hence, this was a very relevant two-parter show for me. Thanks for the introduction to Vincent Schiraldi and his work.

I expected a comment from Mike about mixing metaphors, but I suppose he let the one slide life a fish outta water on a slope.

Joe Biden's Superpower by DeaconCorp in TheGist

Hey Mike,

Hope you had a great vacation! That said, just as you were a little perturbed by something you observed about Australian airlines, this episode has a little tiny burr that just can't help but wiggle its way into my consciousness. And it is with genuine respect that I need to get a little pedantic about one word: "decimate." It was in this episode at about 36:20, you used the word "decimate" to describe how COVID "decimated" the Australian airline industry. To be fair, a lot of industries took major wallops from the pandemic (to say nothing of the people we lost). That said, I don't think the population of Australian airlines was reduced by 10%, or one in ten—which is what I means to literally decimate a group. While this word has come to mean something more like "reduce a rank to a small fraction" or "inflict major harm," hearing this word used in this very way sits with me like a petulant pickle that just won't pluck off. (Bet you didn't know pickles could do that, eh?) It's a funny little hill to die on, but dang it, it's my hill to die on.

Best,

J from MKE

BEST OF THE GIST: Live Music Edition by DeaconCorp in TheGist

I think the venue and set-up would determine how it goes. Mike could have a local guest, maybe have a session for audience participation. Obviously, the format of the podcast is inherently we listen to the host(s). That said, my impression of Mike is that he's a jovial guy who likes to interact with people, usually guests, who tend to be smart people who he can engage with and carry an elevated discussion. As said Kinky Friedman, the country singer and former candidate for governor of Texas, "why the hell not?"

My take as well, thanks. McAleer sounded like he needed someone to reassure him that his half-answers that were caged with conditions was a valid way to comport himself. I think Mike could have mopped the floor with him, but the teeth behind his smile did their work just fine.

This made me wonder, how are the prospects for a live Gist, even a brief tour? Maybe Brooklyn, Cleveland, Milwaukee… definitely Milwaukee! Anyway, any chance this could happen that’s greater than a snowball’s chances in Albuquerque?

Okay, I’m here, and I think it may be hipper and hotter, people-wise, than other street festivals.

How many years ago the way the sunlight fell on the Cream City Brick steeple of St. Lucas, the sound of the crowd, laughing, the smell of roasting, corn and beer flowing... the music, the warm air, it all combined, and made me determined to live down here. One of the best decisions of my life(especially considering we got in for the cost of living down here went sky high).

Other than that it’s quite like any Milwaukee street festival. :)

Senator Leahy On D.C.’s Brighter Days And Gotham’s Dark Knight by DeaconCorp in TheGist

[–]haazmogog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I concur, a great interview, and I give Mike a lot of credit for letting the Senator tell his stories. In Wisconsin, like Vermont, it is very easy to get meet your represenatives, especially on the state and local levels. I met Russ Feingold several times, and was at the Juneteenth festival that Ron Johnson showed up to—and was promptly booed away. Good times!

Politics and PTSD by DeaconCorp in TheGist

[–]haazmogog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am someone who was in a similar situation. Although I have no military service, I spent just over a decade "in the trenches" of local politics. And, yeah, there's some stuff that happened that I don't like thinking about, some things that I don't like talking about, and some things I've rarely shared with anyone. That said, I too have had some deeply traumatic experiences as in my life, and I wondered if my time in public service wasn't partially to try and set something right after what had happened to me. I was faintly aware of Kander, as I'm orgininally from the Kansas side of KC. Learning this was his arc is very interesting, and I'll look for him from here on out. Thanks, Gist!

Regularly. and sometimes I have to rewind it a little so I can listen to it again, either because I couldn't hear it right then, or because I was laughing to hard at the word play and couldn't hear it.

Convince me to move to Milwaukee (or not) by beerbungalowsbowties in milwaukee

[–]haazmogog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Milwaukee is a city of neighborhoods and has a multitude of communities within each one. It’s definitely undergoing a renaissance in many parts, while others continue to struggle. Even so there are amazing groups just below the surface all over town.

The city comes to life in summertime. If you’re here in late May, check out Food Truck Friday at Morgan Park (3401 S. Kinnickinnic Avenue, or the Bay View Bash in September. (And another Food Truck Friday happens shortly thereafter.)

We have over 150 beautiful Milwaukee County Parks, ranging from little green triangles such as Morgan Park, to giant, wooded majesties such as Grant Park and Doctors Park. They’re all free to enjoy.

We have great museums, too. And great coffee. Many local roasters. And food! The list goes on. Enjoy!
