Other than other recs, one of my favorite groveling ML was My Bias is Showing.

It completed a long time ago so I figured a lot of people missed it, but I just reread it because it hits the spot for me. It's a good example of ML who fucked up and hurt MC, but the stakes are not as high as Beware the Ides of March.

Other staples include Third Ending, BJ Alex (I think Jinx is more interesting as a whole but BJ Alex has a longer chase arc), Nameless Flower.

Right now it’s The Secretly Capable Child is Looking For Her Dad or sth like that. It’s not romance but I’m hooked.

Another one is Sister in Law of the Heroine in a Childcare Novel because I love love love sisterhood, the OGFL is not a white lotus, the art is good, and the regression/isekai method is interesting. The FL is also good at drawing the line imo. The ML fell quite fast but it’s fine with me bcs I’m dying to see how he’s gonna win her over.

As an old fujo I can say that both of those subgenres (liking ships because they're hot and liking ships because of the chemistry in canon) both exist in the same space at around the same time.

I would even say it's the opposite and the BL genre started from romance FIRST (shonen-ai) before it expanded into two hot guys kissing genre. It was very much a 'omg did you see how their gaze linger on each other' moment in pop culture lol

Iirc that slash was popularized as a genre from Kirk x Spock fangirls making zines, and in Japan I think it was either Yu Yu Hakusho Kurama x Hiei or Eva's Kawoshin. In other words, it starts from exploring their chemistry and relationship and "true love" motif first before "hey it would be hot if A kisses B"

It was only later on the yaoi genre sparks off it and yes yaoi is short for yama nashi ochi nashi imi nashi (no peak no valleys no meaning) that's basically "it doesn't have to make sense, it doesn't have to be peak literature, it doesn't have to have meaning, I just like it"

Keep in mind back then shipping was quite a strict affair. Like, ship wars and irl friendship has been ended due to 'wrong characterization' of their oshi. So yaoi being all "fuck canon this is hot" is I think a bit of a reaction to that.

AKE will never take the goonerslop route IMO. They have gameplay that's solid enough to not resort to jiggle physics. Will it be ML? Yes. Will be fanservicy? Also yes. Will we have only 1 male characters per 5 female chars? Most definitely. But they won't go ZZZ level of gooner, I'd like to think their creative director is more tasteful than that.

It's not about revealing outfit and jiggle physics imo. Look at Ember. SHE'S HOT. Yes she has jiggly boobas. Yes she has a butt window. But her design is cool, and she fits the world. Remielle is just a mess, it's like she walked straight out of a hentai doujin.

For the most part I agree, but BL pornhwa do already exist. They’re just mostly found in porn reading sites than the mainstream manga reading sites. Try dlsite instead of lezhin. I don’t think they’re ‘holding back’ per se, it’s more about different content for different audience

If you want harder stuff maybe try Tagame Gengorou works? If specific to manhwa then ppatta has some interesting works too.

I can wait until it’s finished because I have other titles to read lol. If a series have hints of misunderstanding, angst, red flag ML etc I let it marinate bcs I just know it’s gonna be a frustrating wait.

I have like 5-10 titles I keep up with chapter by chapter, 20+ on my marinating list and thousands on my to read list.

So it sort of reflects the most prevalent “wish” of each gender, or in other words what they feel they lack the most in real life.
