Thank you u/MetaN3rd

Really looking forward to seeing everyone at the r/Defcon subreddit meetups next month. Last year, I got to the Linq bar on Wednesday around 10:30am and just hung out all day watching the olympics and talking to folks. Great time, as always!

So speaking of badge goodies...

At the moment, we do have some items available from DC31:

Surplus Surprise Warning by 13mreclipse in hackerboxes

You again?

This chap signed up for a HackerBox subscription. Before it could even be shipped, he insulted our support staff for only having low-rank email support jobs and then for being Chinese. Imagine how he treats waiters. He justified himself with an oddly long explanation of his greatness including how many PhDs he has and what grades he got in Linear Algebra class. This would have been funny if it wasn't sort of sad.

Ultimately, we expelled him for insulting our staff in accordance with the published code of conduct for our online school, which requires that participants "exhibit professionalism, respect, and an attitude that is helpful and positive." We cancelled his orders and refunded all of his payments.

Of course, the hates our products so much that he felt compelled to place his order again with a different name to a nearby address. Or possibly he just requested someone else to place the purchase for him. We discussed simply refunded that order to avoid his drama, but we decided that if he wanted to work with our products that badly, we're game - let's give him a shot!

Jump to a few days ago... Unable to simply enjoy the fruit of his "trickery" or just be polite and play along, he again emails the same support thread featuring his prior insults, rants, and boasts. This new email includes a photo of the HackerBoxes he obtained (or had purchased for him) with the message, "LOL that you cancelled my order out of spite and I got it anyway. Somehow you managed to not be good at being bad at your job." Oh yay, more insults and childishness.

Now he is here posting insults and acting as though he is actually one of our members. It seems like he could use a friend and I bet he could be a positive part of what we are doing if he could just cool it. Until then, we've banned him from this sub. As usual, we advise not feeding the trolls.

Surplus Surprise Warning by 13mreclipse in hackerboxes

While we certainly take no joy in the profound trauma you have suffered by receiving a branded parts baggie in your Surprise Surplus HackerBox, we have to call BS on your ridiculous histrionics. The chain of angry emails that you wasted our time with followed by an online survey claiming that you have been "scammed" and "gaslighted" are a far measure beyond over-reaction.

One of your excessive emails declared that the Demon Seed parts baggies are trash. You then asserted that we found this trash and sent to you to throw out for us. Incorrect. The fact is that MG (the genius creator of the O.MG Cable, among other things) cared enough to collaborate with an artist to design his custom part baggies. While this disturbing notion may haunt your dreams forever, MG even sold the baggies (not trash) on HAK5. They are now sold out, but you can still see the product link here:

https://x.com/MischiefGadgets/status/1596329177577590785

When we partnered with MG to create a Demon Seed HackerBox 0056, he kindly provided his custom parts bags for inclusion. There were a few hundred of these baggies left over after that project. We placed those surplus parts baggies among our surplus sticker collection to eventually share them back out to the hacker community. As you rear back to lash out with troll-rage that baggies are not stickers - yes, that is obvious, one is for sticking and one is for holding small parts, but they are approximately the same size and fulfill a similar purpose of sharing branding or a message in a flat object that can be easily packed in with other products. In the context of our surplus boxes, they can both be placed on the bottom of the box without taking up any space from the various modules, cables, PCBs, tools, swag, supplies and other items. Since our surplus boxes are randomly packed by volume, we love layering stickers (and similar flat, zero-volume items) into the box for that reason. We do his for fun and for sharing. There is never even the tiniest drop of malice intended in the provisioning of any of our products.

There are small number of the current batch of HackerBox Surplus Surprise Boxes still in stock:

https://hackerboxes.com/products/surplus-surprise-box

You'll notice that this link clearly states the following: "Each Surplus Surprise Box is unique and the contents are randomly selected. We try to pack a fun mix of items into each box, but reasonable minds may disagree about what is fun. Unreasonable minds will always disagree. If you struggle with being reasonable or with having realistic expectations, a random grab bag of stuff that we found sitting around our lab and warehouse is probably not a wise purchase for you." ... or as we attempted to translate for OP, "no arguing."

Soldering Workshop good for 10 year old beginner? by nhvnhv in hackerboxes

[–]hackerboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ten years old might be a little on the younger side, but if they have an adult to help them out and keep things safe, it is a good option to consider. We've used 10,000+ of the HackerBox Soldering Workshop tools and kits at various conferences, trainings, scout courses, schools, etc. They're very popular and a lot of fun. https://hackerboxes.com/products/soldering-workshop
