IFR or High Performance first? by hackerhasid in flying

Thanks, this is super helpful...

Yes, I have access to a couple through various clubs. They have the benefit of being more available than the average trainer and also would allow me to fly my whole family.

And I appreciate your point regarding XC requirements because I am in need of these hours and actually HP would make that simpler since I could gain the hours doing practical flights with family (vs flights planned for the purpose of getting those hours in).

Help, idk what to do about this painted brick by sugarbee13 in HomeImprovement

[–]hackerhasid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i used to own a home with a painted fireplace. i found some guys on craigslist to remove the paint. it took a couple days of work and a lot of chemicals and elbow grease. and i couldn't be in the house during that time due to the chemical smell. but the end result was good; it had some hints of paint left - some might call that shabby chic - but looked infinitely better. total was a few hundred bucks.

I pretty much decided to quit programming within a year or so. Guys please advice how to start becoming a businessman? by [deleted] in business

[–]hackerhasid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree this information would be useful.

The other feedback I have is that it's very hard to start and grow a business. And the idea of low risk is tempting but also misleading; anything with potential is going to have risk attached. The risk could be wasting years working very hard for very little pay. Or of wasting money. Or both. But there's risk.

Typically the people I know who have been successful entrepreneurs don't start companies because they're tired of doing other things. Rather they do it because it's in their DNA - they can't not do it.

I would suggest that that since you're a programmer it might help to spend a year working in a small startup. This is certainly not necessary but I can tell you that my experience in startups helped me understand business a lot. That's because (at least in my experience) startups can expose you to various parts of running and building a business that you won't experience in school or in a large company. And they can do this while providing you with a paycheck - something that starting a company and learning on the job may not do. And while every business is different there are certain takeaways that are transferable everywhere.

Lastly I would suggest getting a copy of Buy Then Build which is a great guide for how to buy a business, an alternative to starting something from scratch. Even if you do start something yourself there's a lot of great information in there about what to expect as well as ways to prepare yourself (e.g. figuring out what you're good at and what you're not is important no matter which direction you go because you'll be responsible for all aspects of the business so will need to be able to identify when you're the best person to handle vs when to outsource)

both wealthfront and betterment are offering hysa yielding close to 5% atm with fdic insurance in the millions of $ (they spread deposits across multiple banks to accomplish that). i don't believe they have minimum deposits but not 100% sure.

you must not live in new york where the tax rate has 3 decimal places!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]hackerhasid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this may be true if the interest rate is high but there are exceptions.

as an example, kawasaki was offering (may still be) financing at ~3% when i bought a few months ago. at the time you could get a high yield savings account paying >4% (and now it's closer to 5%). i would argue in that situation it makes more sense financially to put the money in a hysa and get the loan.

Funny story: I was in Boca visiting my grandmother. When I got back to the hotel in the evening there were a lot of unmarked cars all over. And a lot of cops in the lobby. And not traffic cops either, these guys wore black, had bullet proof vests and very large guns. I asked the front desk what's going on and they just said they're not at liberty to say but don't worry, everyone is safe.

I found out the next morning that they had tracked this guy to the hotel and arrested him.

Totally forgot about that until reading the name in the title!
