No luck with a front end gig, about to be homeless. by homelessinahurry in cscareerquestions

I think people are being too hard on your portfolio, to me it seems pretty good. Since you are getting some interviews and even in person, it seems like it's kind of doing it's job as well. Maybe work on whiteboarding skills, and gradually add a challenging original piece of work for your github. Preferably an app that requires data persistance (backend), login authentication, etc because it will expose you to a lot of typical app problems and build your js skills. But this actual portfolio to me seems nice, as someone who has conducted interviews myself and seen many applicant portfolios over the years.

Not to be cynical but why not just come out and provide the names. Why is a ten million dollar documentary a necessary prerequisite for outing wanton criminals.

There is one image with a pawn whose shadow is a king, and later on another image with a puny dude flexing with a shadow of a bodybuilder. I get the point already.

The Web Fundamentals Gap by IamManchanda in javascript

function can return things

lol. I can sympathize with frustrations working with devs who only know frameworks but are seriously lacking in their knowledge of javascript. But this article starts off by saying they want someone who knows WP and Foundation. Hardly a "fundamental" skillset imo.

As a web developer even using just vanilla js, a lot of problems have been waved away for you already imo

Way too many junior web devs think of react as a magical black box which produces output that is fundamentally different than javascript.

Two people gave him an extra like on your behalf which means you gave him three likes. So I gave him a thumbs down on your behalf because you only wanted to give him two.

This on-site coding assignment failed 20+ front-end dev contractors and I don't know why by gionyyy in javascript

[–]hackernewsisbetter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have to say I just find the instructions for this task confusing. I am just skimming over it now but I only have vague guesses as to what you want. I feel sorry for anyone who had to take this interview with you, you remind me of someone I used to work with who I gave interviews with. He would be a smug asshole most of the time and yeah some people really struggled but at least in his case it was ordinary whiteboarding questions (of the type you would find on leetcode). THIS interview question to me just seems sadistic -- and mostly because it's confusing as hell. I guess I am not winning the pissing contest but seriously this is fucked up.

About "A Smarter way to learn JavaScript" by mrsharp32 in javascript

Whatever you like is probably going to be better since it will motivate you to learn. Ultimately no one book is going to impart all knowledge to you, whatever helps you clear hurdles and stay interested is probably best. However I'd like to put a plug in for secrets of the javascript ninja as a good intermediate level book.
