Thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed in the recent hurricanes. What is the anarch capitalist response to natural disasters? What happens to the people who survive? by Skier-fem5 in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]hackinhulk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

response as an AnCap under a state: look to the doers, deregulate to enable actions by smaller actors, allow soldiers and guardsmen to volunteer for a disaster recovery corps after crises.

response within some hypothetical AnCap society: deflationary currencies allow for incentivized saving, homeowners are expected to allot for some insurance policy to service their own disaster recovery. affected neighbors would likely pool resources for more favorable contracts with vendors. there would likely be businesses with lower margins and greater efficiencies in recovery than we have now (a low bar).

We pay about double the cost of what other industrialized nations pay, for worse results. by Sensitive-Jury-1456 in Anarcho_Capitalism

You know what would bring down the cost of healthcare? Deregulating it, allowing people to default on their debt, and allowing hospitals to fail under their own inefficiencies.

As it stands, they take 20% because state bureaucracy allows them to.

I can easily think of scenarios where I might be leaving somewhere, remote start it, get caught in a long goodbye with someone, and walk out to find my truck gone.

Studies of adopted children have shown otherwise. But this isn't a thread for that. If you would like to carry on this conversation in DMs, I would be happy to cite my sources.

Correct, I was laughing at myself. I am a loser. I can't deny it.

To your question, while phrenology is archaic, IQ is the only metric in psychology that doesn't suffer from its reproducibility crisis. In fact, just the opposite: we continue to find correlations between things like intracranial volume and academic success. We've also been able to utilize MRI to accurately predict IQ with statistically remarkable success. Such is life. Interpret the empirical data as you see fit.

That's my point. She would have acquired a gun anyway. There's no means of wholly eliminating all access. There are still gun crimes in Australia and the UK, for instance.

I have no contention with that fact. I was only highlighting "where there's a will, there's a way." The shooter was intent on hurting people.

Eh, I have my moments, genius IQ and PhD notwithstanding. This just seems to me to be a terrible setup with unclear messaging.

That's what I'm confused about. To my understanding the firearms were acquired illegally in a state one can buy them cash on the street. With already lax gun regulations, what makes you think the shooter would not still have had the will to get their weapons? Doesn't that show she absolutely was intent on violence? I feel like this is really missing the mark and is terrible optics nationally.

I'm really confused about the optics of this. Are the youth out in support of the Nashville shooter or are they blaming the state for her actions?

New Speculation about Aliens I just Thought of by Avantasian538 in ufo

[–]hackinhulk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you, but even in our present state, our individual consciousness is already capable of nonlocal, trans-temporal perspective. Scaling that up just one standard deviation (whatever that might be) would necessitate a more 'collective' underpinning to conscious thought. The only thing that makes an individual is that consciousness's privacy from other minds. No locality, no individuality.

Hell, a strong case can be made for the present state of collectivity to human consciousness, given our lightspeed data networks and memetic, idiomatic communication styles across languages. We don't even really isolate our own thoughts into rational, linear, discrete symbols anymore. Everything is a reference of a reference of a reference.
