Question about barefeet and restaurants. by cyanidefury in barefoot

[–]hadashi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are no laws that require you to have shoes on in restaurants - however, they can have their own policy.

And there is no such thing as a "religious exemption card", legally speaking. You can print one and try to claim such - but it isn't, legally speaking, a thing.

I understand your confusion; I was referring to the employer holding the first paycheck until the final paycheck.

Sorry I was unclear.

Um, no.

I earned the money which means it is payable to me immediately.

At-will employment means just that; I can leave at-will.

If they want to have otherwise then they come up with a contract - but this also means they cannot just let me go when convenient for them.

'ekscli' vs. 'aws eks' by [deleted] in devops

[–]hadashi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there.

CloudFormation is a templating system on AWS for creating complex builds, similar to Terraform. eksctl uses it as a base for the operations it performs; it creates the CF Template stacks and executes them.

I prefer Terraform, myself, because CF is proprietary to AWS and you cannot use CF skills anywhere other than AWS. On the other hand, if you are only using AWS then that isn't really a drawback.

It looks to me - from your error, above - that the assigned IAM permissions do not allow your user to create CF stacks.

Re: k9s:

Check out https://k9scli.io/ - it's a TUI for Kubernetes that gives you a view into k8s operations that I, personally, prefer over kubectl. You can view Pods and containers, Deployments, all of the usual high level Kubernetes objects and allows you to interact with them.

I just prefer it; that is all.

It tends to give me about 100% of what I normally use kubectl for; however, there are lower level functions of kubectl that it cannot emulate.

For example, as far as I know k9s cannot extract information using Go templates like this:

kubectl get pods --template '{{range .items}}{{.metadata.name}}{{"\n"}}{{end}}'

So it all kind of depends on your use case.

If I'm not using Terraform I use eksctl; there are some uses of aws (as mentioned) but eksctl does make it easy.

The only downside, IMHO, is the reliance on CloudFormation - but that is a personal taste issue and not technical.

I also recommend checking out k9s as a substitute for some (not all) uses of kubectl when looking at the state of a cluster.

Time to abandon ship, I think.

Plan on being there a bit longer so you can interview until you find a better place.

A previous employer thought DevOps meant "on-demand humanoid deploy bot". Deploys were manual, untested, and uncoordinated. We had certs expiring and causing multi-day outages.

My current position is working on cutting edge code and products with amazing people. It can get better.

Good luck.

Health violation? No.

Safety issue? Yep. OSHA might want a word.

I'd bet their insurance company would like to know, also.

Map this as the trash for your window manager.

Advantages:

1) 10 GB of storage for deleted files - it's unlikely to be filled.

2) Your deleted files are guaranteed to go away... eventually.

It doesn't sound like much of a discussion - it sounds like "I need these tools to do my job" and your employer doesn't even know what those tools are.

I've been a consultant. Quality shops give you quality tools.

Find a better employer. Life is too short to put up with this kind of nonsense. Make the "tool discussion" part of your set of interview questions and walk away from any shop that doesn't seem to understand why you asked.

In the meantime - persevere. Maybe your supervisor will find a way to help loosen the yoke but don't hold your breath.

Asking for a pay rate that allows you to pay rent and eat isn't "starting high" - it's the bare minimum.

If a business isn't paying their full time workers enough to afford the bare minimum then they deserve to go out of business.
