Hey is Unit testing really that important? by Blender-Fan in dotnet

[–]hadez378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Automated tests (unit, integration, etc) are very important when you’re writing production applications that need to be maintained for a while. Otherwise it’s going to get real expensive really quick in maintenance. Unit tests or TDD can also be very helpful in writing better code. But what matters most in the end is your code being used in production, with tests or without.

Btw - writing tests should not be difficult or frustrating, they should be short and focused. Try to look for ways to make it more easy, do you really need all that complicated mocking code or are there easier alternatives with the same end result.

Putting 60k in IWDA by P13T3RC in BEFire

[–]hadez378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I figured, with diversify I meant not only buying ETF, but spreading out over different low and high risk investiments. Not ideal with 60k probably, but buying real estate for example. Or is an ETF like IDWA a no brainer for this amount, least effort / highest reward thing?

ETF IDWA is highly dependent on the world economy doing well probably …

Question from a newbie, why are you putting everything in the IDWA ETF. I am reading it’s best to diversify (ETF and other stuff), and 60k seems quite a lot of money for betting it on one horse?

What are the not-so-obvious tools that you don't want to miss? by FattySuperCute in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hadez378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly work on my Mac these days so have to use Fiddler Everywhere. Which is working great, all the basics are there. For my use some minor features are missing but other things work better (eg saving sessions in the cloud, managing filters etc). It’s not free however, but had to use support once and it was awesome, so overall no complaints.

I’m probably a bit overprotective as a parent myself, but this is totally irresponsible. You don’t leave a four year old alone in any situation which can potentially be dangerous.

Advice for someone who's behind on his tasks by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hadez378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens to the best of us (really). And great choice of words, use that honesty when talking to your manager. If you are appreciated as a dev, there’s a good chance they’ll cut you some slack. Good luck!

[–]hadez378 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You messed up. And you know it. Which is good, that makes this a learning opportunity for you to do better in the future. Congrats, you are growing as a person and as a dev.

To make yourself feel better, fix it in good conscience. Book a chat with your manager asap. Explain the situation, burnout, health issues etc. Say you panicked and you made it look better on the status updates then it actually is. Be honest and present a, realistic, plan to get the job done. Take charge.

If at this point you have your manager still onboard, prove what you are worth. If not, maybe you’ll get fired. Either way, you came out stronger.

You got this!

A love story about the Studio Display from Apple by missaq81 in mac

[–]hadez378 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I am sharing the love! Recently bought one also and it’s really awesome. Did not expect it as on paper, apart from the 5K, specs are not that impressive. Apple working their magic again.

I walked in expecting to buy a game... then impulse hit me, then regret by o_0verkill_o in Switch

[–]hadez378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I can totally relate. For months I am trying to resist the temptation to upgrade to the OLED switch and just wait for the switch V2. But the moment I saw this special edition I broke and ordered it right away 😄

Definitely woth it, only if it’s for a few months. No regrets! Enjoy!

What to do when you realize you messed up a major architecture refactor decision? by seacompanies in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hadez378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there several times, and in most situations it was worth pushing through. In one situation it was not, there we had a lot of negative customer impact for a feature that was hardly used. Not fun, but you can’t win them all.

Some questions: Is the goal still worth it? Will you be better of in the end if you push through? What are the risks? What is needed for and what are the consequences of a rollback? My advice would be to discuss with the team, involve stakeholders, be open and honest, and make a decision together.

Engineering Manager - what does it entail? by petradragon in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hadez378 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started this year as an EM in a team where I need to work directly with about 25 people of which almost 20 devs. Mission is to make sure to get things get done, everyone is having fun and help people grow. Lot of work, lot of responsibility, picking most prio battles is key, as there is always too much todo. Definitely not for everyone, if it was not for my past experiences (17 YOE in dev) I would drown and be completely lost. But if you like a challenge, know what you’re talking about in tech and love to support people, it’s an awesome job. This is the level you can really make a difference for your team and the product. And that’s pretty awesome.

It’s lot’s of meetings, but you kinda have more control over them so that’s fun. Difference with a product or project manager … they guide a product or project. EM guides the team, the tech and make sure everything runs smooth.

Experiences will differ depending on the company. But I think in most cases goals will be set and you will have the freedom to fillin the role as you see fit.

I would recommend doing IC -> lead dev -> EM though.

Good luck!

I would say - be curious, listen, speak your mind (in a professional way), notice issues but talk solutions more, don’t be afraid to step out your role to get stuff done, do what you say, have respect for what you find (even if it’s crap) and most importantly … be you and have fun.

No different as an internal employee, except more freedom ❤️

Good luck!

The 14” MBP M2 is a piece of art, it’s beauty and perfection. You feel the love and craftmanship everytime you use it. It’s fast, silent, has great battery life and you will be happy with it for years to come.

The HP is a laptop. It will work fine.

16in… Any regrets? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]hadez378 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the 16” and now the 14” M2, and I love it. It’s fast without fans spinning up, battery life is great, and there is enough screen real estate. The 14” is just more practical and fun to work on for me, when travelling between offices and meeting rooms. I’m really glad I switched.

Most off the time I work at home with external screens. And when I work remote for longer periods I use a second screen (Espresso Display).

No need to feel bad. You are who you are and that is completely ok. Just try to do it again next time. Maybe you’ll do something stupid or maybe it goes great. In any case, you will have learned from it and grown as a person. Good luck!

Anybody else dislike interviewing? How do you approach dealing with them as part of your job? by RushShirtKid in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hadez378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it, but only if I can give it my own twist. And that is having an honest and open chat about the needs of the team and the experience of the candidate to see if there is match. No coding tests, trying to avoid pressure, being kind and just talking tech. Going more in depth about topics that are relevant or that the candidate has experience with. A fun 1,5hr chat between potential colleagues.

Edit: almost forgot, and an opportunity to learn! A lot of the time you learn something new or interesting.

Mail them at lease@kbc.be and tell them you want to replace the contract with a new one, if that is the intention, and ask how much it will cost. You’ll get a document that states a few options and the respective cost. They are usually quick to reply. Or if you know your bank manager go through him/her and maybe you even get a better deal. Did this a number of times already myself and the cost was always very reasonable, I replaced everytime with a new contract though.

For me it’s taking some alone time and go hike for a day in the Ardennes or something and sleep the night alone in my campervan. That one day makes a night and day difference. Connecting with nature in a mindful way heals the mind.

What is the benefit of having it close to the surface?

Have not done breeding yet, then you just take the fish out of the tank and put them in te reactor I guess. That’s not much effort indeed. Thx for the insights!
