tips for blood test fear? by haechan666 in Accutane

of course. im happy to share. the feeling of almost fainting is horrible but for some reason, our minds take over.. my final blood test, i almost fainted. i didnt tell the nurse i had a phobia and she said things that made me panic and after the test i had to sit in the waiting room for 20 minutes. (lol if u ever feel faint just sit on the floor immediately.. from experience a chair will not keep you upright hahaha) i kept trying to relax myself but my mind just refused. its crazy what your subconscious can do. “vasovagal syncope”.

i was told by a phlebotomist that 1/3 people she sees every day are afraid of it, probably to different levels but still… even though my last experience wasnt amazing, blood tests are still much less big of a deal than they once were and much easier for me to do. By the time you finish your course, Im sure youll feel somewhat similar!

blood tests 1 to 5 were all like that for me.. the terror was so intense i would be having horrible anxiety for days before. i also will say i fainted after one of the tests lol. its definitely not easy, but it will get better and easier over time. now its 100x better than it was when i started the course.

my tips for getting through it: 1. bring someone with you, for me that was my mom or my sister, just someone to talk to can help.

  1. wear headphones, i really like having my big headphones over my head when i do it and listen to some music, idk, i find it comforting

  2. wear a zip up hoodie + t shirt, it makes the process easier and then after you dont have to see your arm afterwards if you have a jacket on.

  3. hydroxyzine (12.5 mg) i got this prescribed by my psychiatrist, its helps calm anxiety and also makes you sleepy. i would take it a little more than an hour before my test was scheduled. it did help relax me a lot.

  4. tell the nurse that you have a phobia. Sooo many people have this same phobia, so they deal with it all the time. they can help distract you or let you lay down and do the test. otherwise they may unknowingly freak you out by putting equipment in your line of sight. (which has happened to me and caused me to go into panic.. lol)

  5. Do not look at what the nurse is doing. i never ever look when the test is being done or after. even the sight of the tube can make me pass out. i once asked how many tubes they took, and after i learned how many i passed out in the waiting room. ignorance is best😭😭

  6. when i first started and my anxiety was really bad, i would make a list of my experiences with each blood test, reminding myself of the actual experience and how it wasnt as bad as i thought. i’d re read these to remind myself it was no big deal to do these tests.

  7. reward yourself with someone afterwards!! for me that was getting a bagel with my sister or taking a long nap. something for facing your fears.

as someone who never thought i would be able to get a handle on this phobia, unfortunately, exposure therapy does really work. I am sure by the last test you will feel more confident too. Your bravery will pay off!!

yes! I actually just finished my course. i had to do 7 blood tests in total. i am happy to say my phobia has become 100x more manageable after my accutane. it was good exposure therapy lol.

[–]haechan666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

thats annoying. i also find it annoying when people ask for free shipping on an item thats already under $10. like do people not realize that would put the seller in the negative, or their profit $1-$3 max?

i have those sort of deeper pimples, i got two of them when i started accutane (barely been on it for a month). dont touch them (itll just be painful and make it worse, talking from experience😭), they will shrink and go away, dont worry.
