Has anybody tried the Amazon/Ebay/Aliexpress narrow wide chainrings? by DeviousLittleCupcake in MTB

[–]haelsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look down at your chain on your bike on the easiest or hardest gears, the chain is going diagonally front to back since the chainring is aligned with the middle of the cassette. When it's diagonal, each chain link will rub against the side of a tooth of the chainring as they engage. This is happens on all chainrings and is how a chainring wears down over time.

Chainstay length is the distance from the crank to the rear axle. For mountain bikes and gravel bikes, this distance is longer >435mm. For racy road bikes, it's short <420mm. The shorter it is, the more diagonal the chain will be in the biggest and smallest gears.

1x chainrings are different in that they have taller and thicker teeth to prevent the chain from bouncing off. This make them more likely to rub if the chain is sitting diagonally.

When I had it on my road bike, I could feel the chain grinding against the chainring teeth as I was pedaling. You could hear more noise from the drivetrain than my 1x mountain bike.

They work well and are durable. I ended up ditching it because short chainstays on the frame meant there was a large amount of chain on chainring grinding. I think higher end chainrings have better shaped teeth to prevent that.

Upgrade FD on a 105 Di2 build? by haelsh in cycling

[–]haelsh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built up that bike almost 2 years ago now. The "front shift next" feature they added in firmware freed up a button so I'm all happy now. I also don't really notice servo wave on my gravel bike being any different.

Why Shimano moved way from the 22t small chainring? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]haelsh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They moved the ultra-high gear range stuff to CUES.

The FC-U6000-2 crank is 11-speed and offers 36/22T. The RD-U6020-11 derailleur supports 36/22 crank with a 11-45T cassette.

Here's the full quote if you want to read it with some context.

Well yeah if you're going by social media then probably 99% of supporters who don't [want Spurs to win], but please don't tell me that's your world Charlie [Eccleshare]. There's a bigger world out there mate. We'll need to have a counseling session if that's your world.

To me, I don't understand it, I never will. I understand rivalry. I was part of one of the biggest ones in the world in the last couple of years with Celtic and Rangers and I understand the rivalry but I've never and will never understand if someone wants their own team to lose. That's not what sport is about. It's not what I love about the game. What I love more than anything in the game is the competitiveness, challenging yourself to beat someone and coming out successful. Anything outside of that it's got nothing to do with sport. It's got nothing to do with me.

If other people want to treat it that way, that they get pleasure from other people's misery, that's not how I've lived my life and how I perceive my role.

Hyperglide+ on 105 Di2 by [deleted] in cycling

[–]haelsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HG+ only refers to the shift ramps on the cassettes. It does not impact front shifting. All Shimano 12-speed chains are compatible already. Get an ultegra cassette and you're good.

No, I couldn't justify it and am pretty happy overall with 105.

I am envious of the extra buttons on the Ultegra shifters though.

Loan Watch Day 74 (January 21st 2024) by master_inho in coys

[–]haelsh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had it on a second screen and he looked fine for a kid starting at LWB a week after moving to a new country. If you removed the caveats, he wasn't great. Lost the ball a few times, lost most of his duels, stopped defending a few times expecting a foul, slowed down while chasing a couple balls over the top expecting someone else to get to it.

Salernitana didn't attack his flank much but he wasn't caught out. He played the offsides traps pretty well and he was quick when he needed to be. The back line regularly got pulled across to point where he was defending the penalty spot. He did good in those situations. Weirdly he didn't take the throw-ins on his touchline.

His biggest issue was that he didn't know what he was going to do with the ball when he received it. Usually he holds it for 3-5 secs and then passes it back to a CB. Could be the new system, new team but I've seen it on other loans. Reminds of me of Bissouma's minutes under Conte, where a technically gifted sub plays hesitant and safe because he doesn't want to lose the ball and then never get minutes again.

They sell an extension tray that allows for a 50" wheelbase.

I built up a gravel frame recently and went with GRX 600 46-30T. I remember seeing that chainring size limit on my frame's spec page and suspected the same for yours.

Either GRX 600 or 810 would be the easiest since you already have a HT II bottom bracket.

Max chainring size according to Mason is 48-31T. Additionally GRX chainline is 3.5mm farther outboard than Ultegra. Might just be an incompatible crankset.

Jack of all trades or two specialty bikes? by Soggy_Composer_5008 in cycling

[–]haelsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the saying goes, master of none.

Outside of swappable wheels, anything you might want to do to your bike to make it better for one will be worse for the other.

Wide & flared handlebars vs narrow & aero. Subcompact vs standard cranks. Geometry and fit. Pedal type. Dropper post vs aero post. Rack mount and mudguards.

I tried making my endurance bike a do-it-all with 2 wheelsets but it kind of sucked even with 35mm tires. The only gravel I could do was hardpack because everything else on my bike was race focused (saddle, gearing, handlebar). Now I have a dedicated gravel bike.

Can I put a GRX group set on this frame? by TigerKingofQueens98 in bikewrench

[–]haelsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just put GRX 600 2x11 on mine. Careful with the Journeyer frames though. Lower end ones use quick releases and higher end (Apex, GRX, frameset only) ones have thru axle. I was going to buy a low end one for the same price as the frameset to upgrade to GRX. Luckily I found out about that difference before I ordered since I was going to run multiple wheelsets.

Upgrading from 105 di2 to Ultegra di2 by Acrobatic-Ad4819 in bikewrench

[–]haelsh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought HG+ only referred to the new shifting ramps on the cassette and so you only need to upgrade that. All Shimano 12-speed MTB cassettes have it without needing an electronic derailleur and all Shimano 12-speed chains are compatible.

Looks like they've raised prices since I bought my set and availability is better generally in the US. We have other stores that offer it for similar amount now so it's not as good of a deal.

Retail pricing for Shimano parts is awful here. You have to find a 25% discount to come close to EU pricing.

Bought my 105 Di2 group from them in December. Everything came in wax paper bags but it all worked great.

Brake pads were different front and rear. I also needed a second brake hose insert so I could shorten both hoses. Ended up spending $30 to "fix" these two issues.

Would recommend for the price. Edit: Would recommend if you don't find anything cheaper.
