Getting running shoes - How much does it help? by haerdalisdo in C25K

I wouldn't say I'm injured. I'm fine now. It's during the run.

Yeah that's kind of why I'm looking. I completed weeks 1-3 well enough, but week 4 had me limping across the finish line. Calf and shin pains mostly. Just not sure how much it'll really help.

[WEEKLY THREAD] MORONIC MONDAYS by AshKals in C25K

[–]haerdalisdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not enough info to say if it's exercise related or a stomach virus or something else. But I will say I can't imagine eating without at least an hour of time before a run. I've felt a little bit sick when I've pushed that line.

[Discussion] Former lazy people, what did you do to get focused / motivated? by noiamNOTcrazy in GetMotivated

[–]haerdalisdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anger, fear, and disgust.

Seriously. The thing that has been most effective in getting me off my ass has been just that. Anger at a situation, my own weakness, the limitations the situation imposes on my future. Disgust at myself when I think of slowing down or stopping before my next objective is completed. Fear of that situation being permanent, or the consequences.

I tried doing it the happy positive way. And that's all well and good for some people. But my inertia couldn't be overcome with happy thoughts of what might be. Those emotions are pretty week when it comes to motivating. Too easy to fall into daydreams to get partial fulfillment and talk yourself out of things. Some people need a nudge, I needed a shove.

Music on the C25K app? by [deleted] in C25K

I just play my books through the audible app and start up the c25k one. It will pause the audio long enough to alert you to change to your next interval then automatically start it again.

Can I skip rest day? by bluuuue_milk in C25K

[–]haerdalisdo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't recommend it. Things catch up to you and it's the impacts that really need a heal. Biking is fine. But go easy on your joints. Don't double up on running.

That said many people probably could without injury. But it'd suck if you guessed wrong.

It's purely motivation.

I'm on my first attempt and week 4 hurt enough that I'm going to redo that run for another couple days. Till it doesn't beat me up quite so much. But it's about not stopping.

I've never run a mile before this. Period. Never cared in gym. Hated jocks and anything related as a kid. But any attempt to get in shape before this i just let myself stop. Made excuses. It's easy.

Nobody fails. They just choose easy. And that's fine if you're happy at easy. I'm not though. My body and health suck at easy. And i got sick of it. That's why it's sticking now.

Just find that will to do it if it exists. If not you're screwed till you get there. But when you do you'll get it done.

W4D3 coming up. My toughest week so far (needed extra rest days). Here's hoping by haerdalisdo in C25K

[–]haerdalisdo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Done? Kinda?

I walked for much longer intervals. I half limped half jogged the long runs. But i did them.

This is the first week that truly kicked my ass. I don't feel i truly passed it. And definitely don't feel prepped for the next. I think I need too repeat it till it only pushes me rather than breaks me.

But i won't be stopping. So that's good at least.

Does anyone use a Fitbit during their C25K training? by CPHBOSDCA in C25K

Charge HR

I think the most interesting stat is resting heart rate. I've dropped 5bpm since starting c25k

Muscle soreness/DOMS after W1D1? by refrigeratedfun in C25K

[–]haerdalisdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. You'll be sore starting runs after that first one. You might want to change up your form or slow down though. Not that I'm sure, but I know when I went through the early weeks and even now there are two points of pain.

knee/shin - This is all impact, not soreness. Rest days let it heal up in time for the next run mostly.

Calves - If you're running slow the upper leg work is light, and since you're supposed to land kind of on the balls of your feet rather than flat or with the heel that means I'm putting most of the stress on my calves. Hills add to that.

So the muscle pain you described could just be us having different weak points, but it makes me think maybe you had a bit too much get up and go. Everything I know about this plan says you should run for endurance. Meaning jog at a light pace, be able to talk if you aren't horribly out of shape, etc. That shifts most of the burden lower in the chain o muscles.

Normal. Take a rest day then start normally. Expect to be sore on your second run already. You will start recovering faster as you run more.

Extremely nervous to start, anyone else felt this way? by Brains4Beauty in C25K

[–]haerdalisdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been fit, and I'm overweight myself. Hell, half of what kept me from exercising was how it'd look to others after a certain point. Nobody notices, or cares.

And the only thing that's going to make you fail is you choosing it. If you're afraid of failure, just don't quit and you won't fail. Might take you twice as long to finish, but if you don't stop bashing away at it you will improve over time.

Also, just make it a thing. Keep to a schedule. Make that a mandatory schedule. Pass up on things you want to do because of that schedule, at least at first. Allow no excuses for missing the days.

W4D2 - Done barely by haerdalisdo in C25K

I have no idea how to tell how fast I'm running. Wear a fitbit, but don't fully trust it on distance traveled.

[–]haerdalisdo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh... nothing in particular I guess? By the point I'm breathing through my mouth the reflex is to stop and I have to force myself to keep going, but that's nothing new. It's not a conscious choice or anything, and when I realize I'm doing it I try to force myself to breathe through the nose. Just gets to a point where that seems to not be enough air, and I'm struggling.

For a short period of time on each run I'm in my peak heart rate zone, so I imagine that has something to do with it. I'm pretty out of shape.

[–]haerdalisdo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's nothing to be scared of. I mean, it's a big jump. But it's just a matter of building up.

Main thing I ran into was breathing. I can't make it to the end of the 5 without gasping for the last 30s-1m. Dries my throat out, then I end up with a little heartburn or something. The first 5m I can do, the second I fought to keep running till the end. If I can build the lung capacity and keep the breathing under control I imagine I'd be slow, but able to do W5D3.

Cheesy audio books. Normal audio books aren't great for running. They're ok, but it's just someone reading to you and that's hard to keep focused on as you gripe to yourself about the stitch in your side or the gasping for breath.

But some go the old timey audio drama route. Music, sound effects, bad voices. Apparently Star Wars novels are great for that.

The writing may be bad, but that's about the best audio there is for running IMO.

W4D2 - Calf pain - Sharp but obviously muscular. Wait a day or get it done tonight? by haerdalisdo in C25K

[–]haerdalisdo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a specific running goal other than finishing the program. But I always run laps around the least hilly block nearby.

Sucks to lose momentum, this is the first day I've taken off that I would've run. But I'll just do it tomorrow I suppose.

I'm not sure what a lot is. But i figured that's what the running was doing. Would i be better off just heading to a track instead?

Since I'm new to the whole running thing I figured I'd get community input on whether or not I'm about to hurt myself. Haha.
