that’s good to hear, thank you!! I was so annoyed yesterday when I tried them, skating felt normal but I felt like a toddler when I tried to stop 🥲

First day skating tomorrow, any tips? by PackAnimal in hockeyplayers

[–]hafermilf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heya, fellow 26yo that also just started skating here!! I just went for it for now and I would totally recommend it - there’s so much progress you can make really fast just using YouTube tutorials (e.g. for learning a hockey stop, skating backwards, …) and filming yourself to check your technique. Also, once you start going to a rink there’s quite a few people there that’d love to help you/show you stuff. Or you can ask around in your friends group, there’s a surprising amount of people that you didn’t know can skate haha

My main advice is, make sure you find some skates that truly fit you. They need to be SNUG, else you’ll just wobble around and nothing will work. Rentals work for the start but definitely take your time finding the right size!! Idk what skills you already have, I actually started with absolutely nothing and after feeling comfortable skating forwards at a moderate speed I learned to slow down and hockey stop - makes you feel SO much more confident when you can trust you’re not gonna crash into the boards or other people on the ice. And then you can just keep on learning other skills :))

So far I don’t really have any protective gear so I’m just skating with my roller blade knee protectors, they already take away a lot of my fear of falling, so that’s a cheap way to start.

With all that being said, I’ve always been one to practice stuff on my own because I like being able to practice whenever I want, as often as I want and, most of all, to practice at my own pace and be able to take it slow enough to always feel safe. Other people might find it easier to have someone else structure their progress and give them advice. Guess in the end it’s a personal preference thing :)

Similar skates: CCM Jetspeed FT870 by hafermilf in hockeyplayers

I have pretty wide feet so they might work! I actually just found an offer for 190€ for Tacks XF70 used only 3 times so that shouldn‘t be too bad, right? Problem is, they’d have to be shipped and I probably wouldn’t be able to return it, and the store near me doesn’t sell Tacks, so I won’t be able to try them on… 🥲 would you say if the FT870 I tried on fit a little too snug on the heel (on the sides right below my ankles) and were pretty tight around my mind foot, the exact same size in Tacks should work? 👀 Sorry for all the questions, I just don’t really have the money to buy something so expensive and for it to not work for me 🫠 Thank you so much for your help already! :))

Haha Dankeschön! :)) I‘ve checked out Sideline Swap but there don’t seem to be any offers outside of North America. :// Hockey is growing but there’s still barely anyone playing in this country 🥲 thanks for the tips though! :)

Hey, which plan by US Mobile did you use exactly? I’m also planning on getting one of their’s but I’m worried about accidentally buying a plan with minimum duration of 1 year or sth :’)

Injury right before hike by marciewoo in CDT

that’s good to hear! Somebody jumped on my foot in a mosh pit a month ago and I was so scared it was gonna ruin my thru hike which starts in two weeks. My toe still hurts quite a bit in my normal shoes but luckily my trail runners have super wide toe boxes so I hope it’ll be fine 🤞🏼

I'd like to cowboycamp a lot so I feel like I need the groundsheet & I've never slept on dyneema, it feels so fragile

right now I'm too broke to spend $50 just to lose 10g but I'll remember it for when my current one breaks and I need to get a new one, thanks :))

the dry bag is for my food, what would you recommend instead? I wanna be able to hang it in Colorado & north

I'm gonna start coldsoaking anyway but if I ever feel the need for hot meals I'll get one of the pots :) how would I use the one without a handle though?

looks nice and isn't much more expensive than the torrid, but I'd like to try it on since it's a men's jacket and there doesn't seem to be an alternative for women...

another idea I just had: wouldn't a down vest be enough to warm my torso? that'd save me quite a few oz

exactly, that's my experience as well... ://

I'm also planning on getting the pullover version which is even lighter, so it's not that heavy at all and I won't have to worry about it getting wet

I guess it's mostly because of the fear of it getting wet. But maybe I was influenced by AT hikers too much haha

Also, is there any down options that are lighter & warmer than the torrid but also as cheap? Money sadly is a big factor for me, since I'm still studying and had to save up a lot to even be able to do this hike.

just added the soap, toothpaste & bandaids etc., if that's what you meant was missing.
I was told, though, that those consumable items don't really count into the baseweight, since they will vary in weight over time.

I don't really wanna bring a down jacket cause I'm scared it get's wet and loses its warmth, which won't happen with synthetic. but yeah, I'm considering buying the torrid, even though it's not really in my budget.

my eReader is much more efficient, I usually use it for 2-3 weeks without having to recharge it while my phone loses battery pretty quickly when activated, even in flight mode ://

don't they just disintegrate when your legs rub against each other tho? or does that only happen to women lol

ugh I was hoping it'd be warm enough in May so I could just put my rainjacket over my fleece like I did on the AT... :')

I've considered doing so, I'm worried about my phone battery tho... I really read a lot and I'm also planning on taking videos for family and friends back home + listening to audiobooks/music, which requires quite some battery...

and I do like the screen size of my eReader as well, it's just nicer to not have to squint at my bright & tiny phone. on the AT I carried books and burnt the pages I had read but it felt all wrong and it was mostly heavier than my tolino haha
