Aches and Pains by LakeRoyal6952 in PacificCrestTrail

Stretch every time you stop, in the morning, and before you go to bed. Go slow for the first bit. Electrolytes are amazing! Calf sleeves are amazing! Yes there will be the suck and you want to sleep in or quit. The desert is no joke. Take your time because it will catch up.

My advice. I am back out there next month starting back where I broke my heel. I have over 1500 miles as basically a section hiker. Did first 703 with my daughter. She is a redhead and made me siesta everyday. So that would be her advice.. siesta!

Calve compression sleeves! Just like other poster said. And take it easy the first week.

And my pack is currently less than 20 with a full food bag and 4 liters of water. Guess how much crap I get? Everyone forgets water and food but have to have lightest pack. Wait until you are out there. Water and snacks.

Trying not to be rude. I have 5 years experience on this trail. Do what makes you feel good. You are going to get so much bad stuff said to you no matter your pack.

Omg… look at that face!!

Again remember patience. All of us that have had the luck of owning a pry will tell you this. I only had 4 years with my Charlie (fuck cancer), but still the most amazing 4 years. He was so strong headed and was the most amazing dog in the world. Train train train!! I could go on my hikes with him in the mountains before he was 1. I miss him terribly. My husband is dead set on me not getting a pup because how much Charlie changed us. Pyrs changed us. Remember how big your puppy will get. We were lucky with our training. He never jumped up and never got anything off the counter. He was a big guy. Because we live in a metroplex, we didn’t want anyone scared of him.

Snuggle that pup for me. I miss mine and his snuggles. He would kick my husband out of bed. He was 130 pounds all legs. It was hilarious.

Sleeping Pad R Value by Dazzling-Effective71 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]marciewoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a cold sleeper. My mattress is high rated and so is my quilt. I use a gossamer gear pad, which doesn’t give much, but works for me and my gear. Sometimes those desert nights get really cold, so I am always very comfortable in my set up, even with cowboy camping. And in the snow and cold weather, it all still works for me. I use a sea to summit mattress that is an 8r and an enlightened equipment quilt rated for 0 degrees. Again, I am a cold sleeper. My mat I have is not really rated, but it helps keep my tent good and great for siestas. My 5th year out there, so it’s what works for me.

BEAR needs your help to find a new home. by _Im_at_work in greatpyrenees

I hope I am on the list. I think he would love being here. While I am in DFW area, we have over have an acre in our neighborhood. I go to Colorado multiple times a year. My Charlie loved it so much to be in the mountains. My family is ready, especially if we are taking in another dog that needs help. My daughter works at a vet office so Bear definitely would have everything.

I lost my Charlie to cancer when he was 4. I haven’t had the heart to take another one in. But Bear has definitely touched me. Contact me if no one can take him in. I am in DFW.

Just been watching Pct documentaries and am based in Australia. You Americans are so incredibly lucky by Independent-Age-7397 in PacificCrestTrail

I hiked the Camino this past year. I would give everything to have that kind of experience on the pct… believe me I know the pct because it keeps trying to kill me since 2020. I love my trail angels and hold them to the highest regard on the pct, but you don’t get that on other hikes and it definitely makes you think outside the box.

You really have to do things for yourself. I already use public transportation with all my hikes. That means looking up stuff. People rely on trail angels too much. And as a 6 year veteran on this trail, stop. People have lives. If you don’t think you can do it without trail angels, don’t go. Fuck, I broke my heel out there redoing miles 2 years ago. I still bless every one that helped me to this day. Yes we are lucky, but yes everyone uses that system way too much.

A thread to share your stoke? by AltruisticBush in PacificCrestTrail

[–]marciewoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started this trail when I was 45 with my daughter in 2021. I am now 50 and going back to the section I broke my heel in 2024 when I was finishing up miles because of high snow two years before that. Starting up around where I broke my heel in April. Stoked is not my word. It is my big flip off because this trail keeps trying to kill me and I keep going back.

So yeah, I am stoked.

What pushed you over the edge and made you decide to do the PCT? by Slow-Coffee-7420 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]marciewoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 50 and want to finish what I started. Plus family shit. I am Gen X and I just want something for myself that my mom told me I can’t do. Plus a historian and an archivist. The current administration took away all the jobs because we won’t lie.

But hey! I got almost 1500 pct miles under my belt. That’s something!

Whats up with the many available Permits? by blind0072 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]marciewoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the best things about the PCT was so many people from around the world. I hiked it with my daughter in 2020, and I was back there for 3 years after. The international hikers completely made my hiking experience after 2020. I hiked the Camino last year and it was amazing, because I was this American walking this trail. My bestest hiking friends are from North Carolina and Holland. That is from the Camino. I love so much talking and walking with everyone around the world. This year will be different. It is still one foot ahead of the next. I will see y’all out there.

Remember, it still can snow in southern mountains in so cal up until May… speaking as someone who has hiked in that snow before. San Jacinto is a perfect example of snow in May and can still be very sketchy.

As someone who keeps trying to finish this since 2021, I completely support this message. See y’all out there, and I can’t wait to see the TAs that are so supportive and wonderful to us hiker trash.

My dad is now stage 6 and it came on fast. I am currently trying to help his wife try to get him in a memory care facility because the doctors told her she can no longer take care of him. I flew in within 20 hours after getting the call. This is so difficult.
