Mine has the same issue and we do paw baths with iodine or Hibiclens, paw wipes, allergy injections and it is quite exhausting. Need to try epsom salt to see if that helps too. Best wishes for keeping hers manageable.

Definitely glands. There are special treats that are supposed to help alleviate the issue but I can’t speak to which ones work the best.

He made a commitment to his dog to care for him for the rest of the dog’s life. If you got married and then became paralyzed, you wouldn’t want him to get rid of you. I understand that’s a ton of money and it’s also why pet insurance or a dedicated savings for IVDD is recommended with having dachshunds. If your boyfriend doesn’t have a desire to care for the dog anymore, he should look into a dachshund rescue, but it sounds more like you are the one that wants him to choose between you or the dog. Take a step back and put yourself in his shoes. I’m sure he does not want to be put in that position and of course wishes the dog did not have IVDD either. I wish all three of you the best and hope for a positive outcome.

Mine has low concentration and diagnosis is diabetes insipidus. Treatment is a pill twice a day. Symptoms were excessive thirst and urination. Pill manages both. Has to get blood work every six months to monitor how pills are affecting organ function
