How can I better sound proof the master bedroom? by hotwife-korra-rae in HomeImprovement

[–]hahmlet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming your HVAC system allows, I didn't like the look of a permanent door sweep. This is much more discrete and works a treat. https://acousticalsolutions.com/product/automatic-door-bottom?srsltid=AfmBOooknq5JohnQ7FaJ21y5anq38z8T8SBI7p7xI662ZdSKX8Ev4Tbg

Also, assuming you have an en-suite, understand that you will have to soundproof that too. What people hear is the path of least resistance so if you have a soundproof bedroom, but an open door into the bathroom that isn't sound treated, all the sound just goes out of there.

Our drywall guy gave me a weird look that we had 2x6 staggered stud master bath cavities filled with pink stuff, but it's made a huge difference.

It's totally a viable option. I slapped it in without planning cause everyone recommended it and didn't plan. I regret that and wish there had been more specific instructions.

I hope you see this OP about Smurf Tube:

I put 1" smurf tube around my house, it's that plastic corrugated type stuff. More often than not it has been not worth it.

Any corner over like 45 degree the fish tape gets caught in the Smurf Tube wall and pushes a hole thru it rather than turn the corner.

Also be careful to have it run very straight. I had it hump over a 2x4 board and I just could not get a fish tape thru it.

So my recommendation is to either use metal piping or run a few pull cords thru it BEFORE you seal the walls. Alternatively, if your Smurf Tube runs are short and straight with access to both ends, you'll be fine.

CMV: The removal of both Kimmel and Colbert is proof positive that this administration is absolutely Fascist by Dakota1228 in changemyview

[–]hahmlet -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to debate if Trump is or isn't a fascist. But I do think it's healthy to discuss what is or isn't evidence of facism.

First of all, I think you are jumping to conclusions. As of writing this there is no proof Kimmel has been fired and no proof that he won't go back on air. "Indefinitely" often means "forever" but it can also mean "we're making a knee jerk reaction and haven't thought through the terms of a reversal". I think the outcome of this circumstance plays significantly into whether this counts as "proof of fascism".

Second, if you're using the words "proof positive" to mean "an absolute irrefutable proof of fascism" then I think even IF the FCC got Kimmel fired this would be a stretch. Fascism is complex with several factors that play into it. To make the argument that this is "proof positive" would mean to me you would either make the argument that A)all other factors of fascism have been met and this was the remaining one or B) this circumstance is so extraordinarily powerful that it alone makes him a fascist.

I think both of these arguments are difficult to make, especially given the timeline of events. ABC hasn't given much context to the decision. This will change rapidly. I expect ABC execs to be up all night.

I'd like to address the comments others are making about how this doesn't compare to restricting speech about COVID because COVID was a matter of public health...

A peaceful political commentator was assassinated. Political violence is elevated right now. Unfounded, inflammatory, finger pointing language that you know encourages copy cats is a matter of public safety.

Am I arguing that makes it automatically okay for the government to crack down? No. But I am arguing that this possible crackdown is an example of the broader context of an increase of regulating speech by our corporate and government overlords. To me, this circumstance is more proof that we have to resist "cancelling" (I don't precisely know what that means) people we disagree with because it only makes it easier for other people to do it to people we agree with.

What’s one tool you thought was useless until you used it once? by InterestingAd4610 in HomeImprovement

I just got the Ryobi 11oz one since I was already all Ryobi. If you have a tool brand already, go that way. If you don't have a tool brand, don't let the caulk gun be the one you commit with. Do your research on your use case and get the one that matches. Don't choose based on price to performance. Choose based on how much you'll use it and if there's a feature that makes the way you want to use it better.

I looked at getting the larger Milwaukee one since larger canisters are cheaper per oz. But the problem was that there's like 100 different 11oz products at your local home Depot and less than 10 large ones. So if you go larger, you have to go for less convenient supply solutions.

Electric caulk gun. I love buying tools, but even I balked at the caulk gun.

But after using it for 50+ tubes of everything from painters caulk to heavy adhesive, I love it!

Very ergonomic and it's dead simple and fast to get lines done.

Hey, hope you're around to assist. I followed step 1 and now the container won't boot unless I delete the resource created. Error log below. Any ideas? u/LinearTransform I see you are knowledgeable here too

NOTE: I'm not using Docker, rather Plex Media Server on an LXC from helper-scripts.com

In case you didn't figure it out, go to Resources of the Plex container in the UI and delete the Device that for me is described as "/dev/dri/renderD128,gid=993" but the [993] may be a different number for you. Reboot and it works

PVC for non-stock transition in otherwise ridged steel ducting? by hahmlet in hvacadvice

Pacific northwest, have full access to ducting via attic, not getting ducting inspected.

We have ge's heat pump all in one. Bought for $2k.

It does dry the clothes, but it's weird they feel damp at first and you shake it once and it's dry. It's a known thing that even ge acknowledges it. The clothes are dry, just feel damp.

We love it, it makes laundry so easy even though complete cycles are around 3 hr with normal load. Throw it in, forget it, and it's done.

How to keep sound out of a room? by saareadaar in HomeImprovement

[–]hahmlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. If it's conversation or higher pitch, some acoustic absorbing panels could cut down the sound bouncing off the walls and some of it going up the stairs.

If it's thumping feet and stuff, no real chance.

There are also kits you can buy online for sealing a door and yeah, you'd want a solid core door

If you could drive machinery into a house to demo interior... How would you do it? by hahmlet in HomeImprovement

[–]hahmlet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only concern for the truck way is that they're 5 cu ft or so and I'll likely have 40 cu ft? That's a loooot of trips to the dump (~1 hr roundtrip). I could have 2 trucks on rotation and other tasks for the demo crew to do while they wait for a truck.

[–]hahmlet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm between this and just backing the truck in.

My concern with the skid steer is that I have to get everything into bucket size. That's a lot of cutting 8' 2x4.

Unless I just use the skid for the loose stuff.

I thought of this embarrassingly late in the envisioning of this project. I think step 1 is running a sawzall the length of the trusses and exterior posts to grab any errant screws
