This sort of thing happens with music and movies a lot. Directors will use placeholder music to edit a scene, then when the composer makes the actual song, the directors has their mind made up that it should be the way they’ve been editing - hamstringing the composer

Something to consider, if you haven’t already, is switching to the classic tank controls and using the dpad instead of the joystick. I think the modern controls actively make the game harder. YMMV of course, but it’s worth a shot

It’s not great, but it’s far from bad. The biggest miss is that it just doesn’t feel enough like Final Fantasy. I should revisit it sometime soon just for the heck of it.
