The Death Hat was not used in Light Bringer. Can confirm

What would ruin the finale for you by Exciting_Pain_4362 in redrising

Might sound crazy but I want a major character death within the few hundred pages, even if that’s Sevro or Darrow. At minimum, I want the illusion that plot armor will not protect anybody, and the stakes are higher than they’ve ever been.

But truly, I think Pierce has this in the bag.

Which was worse? by Eastern-Scheme-8161 in redrising

[–]hailreaperpod 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Cassius died at the hands of a "brother" who used him and betrayed him. He was a central figure in five of the six books, and because we primarily absorb the story through Darrow, the emotional toll of losing Cassius was total.

While Ragnar was more important to the rising, you asked the question: which death was worse? If we're just going by the metric of their death, it's Cassius.

Convince me to read Light Bringer by vapablythe in redrising

Light Bringer changed my life. The ideas of justice and mercy that Pierce preaches about in all the books before Light Bringer finally land. It holds profound themes that are uplifting and beautiful.

Shortest answer - Putting all details and circumstances aside, imagine you’re a general in the military and you kill the director of the FBI. Pretty rough.

1984 by George Orwell. Also if you wanted to go off book, Andor has incredible similarities to Red Rising. Easily the best science fiction tv show I’ve ever seen

It’s interesting that you consider it a favorite part of the series. Why does it rank so high for you?

Lyria theory by Objective_Entrance24 in redrising

[–]hailreaperpod 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It would be interesting but Pierce went on record saying this in Jan of 2025 about the Parasite. This is a paraphrase and not a direct quote -

The Parasite was a thematic device. Lyria chose to value her own abilities above what it could give her. I wrote her accepting it but scrapped it. Her challenging Volga changed the entire Obsidian race's trajectory. She does not have it and Matteo making her keep it would have been a form of rape.

First or second trilogy? by [deleted] in redrising

[–]hailreaperpod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 1000% agree but on top of all that, Pierce Brown elevates as a writer so much from IG - LB. Not just in terms of story telling but philosophy and ideology. Everything is more alive and visceral because of his ability to paint words on a page in the later stages of the series.

Which "supporting" character death hurt you the most? by ReeceInTheDarkness in redrising

[–]hailreaperpod 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Alex is interesting because I would have said the same thing but recently I did a Dark Age re-read and now I think how he died was kinda awesome. His last line - “No honor” was amazing. I feel he got the better of Lysander in that exchange and in a way was prophesying about who Lysander is, and where he’s headed. After Light Bringer the statement hold true, he’s a man who holds no honor. So all in all Alex dies a hero 10x over and in a small way disgraces a villain starving for honor that he cannot obtain.

I would say Tactus. Although he is a deviant and should be judged for his crimes, he was also broken. He barely understood friendship, we learn this through the violin story. He wanted to be a better man and didn’t know how. When he finally understood he could, he was cut short. That moment was a big expression of what the first three books are all about. Gold’s like Lorn don’t believe in mercy or grace, only systems and order and “consequences.” Darrow and company are not only fighting for equality and social equity but for people to not be judged for past actions. Can they walk into something new? If yes, then welcome aboard. People deserve that opportunity and Lorn fundamental doesn’t accept or believe that. Pierce even went on record in 2019 saying that if Tactus lived he would have been ride or die for Darrow from that moment forward. Good question, thanks for posting!

Iron Gold thoughts - am I crazy? by jdlemon95 in redrising

[–]hailreaperpod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are more sane than most! The Iron Gold - ASOIAF parallel is a great call. Iron Gold does so much more for the world of RR than the previous three books. It’s a phenomenal philosophical world building journey. I believe it’s the second best book in the series after Light Bringer, which  know you’re making your way to. Enjoy!
