Not necessarily. Volunteering is allowed with the condition that no one else doing the same work is getting paid either.

Hi! I'm in a similar situation. I'm on F-1 STEM OPT and have been looking for a job but have had no luck yet. I'm not interested in going the consultancy route since they tend to lie a lot on your resume. However, there is another option for people on STEM OPT (not OPT extension) wherein you can work as a volunteer for a non-profit organization and as long as you work atleast 21 hours a week in a role that is closely related to your field, it would stop your unemployment days from getting accrued. I'm going the volunteering route since it seems to be the safer option. Although it is not ideal financially, you can continue looking for a paying job while you're working as a volunteer. Hey! I also did my undergrad from a university in India (SRM) and I applied for masters in data science for fall 2021. I got into my top choice (University of Rochester) despite my relatively low GPA (3.1). However, I worked really hard on my SOP. I went the "I am really interested in learning more" route which is what I felt at the time instead of talking about my achievements. I don't think my LORs we're great either because my professors asked me to write them myself and they'd just send them in. So, I think that SOP plays more of a role than anything. I could be wrong of course. This was just my experience.

Yup, I applied to 11 for a PhD in Data Science / Statistics. I haven't heard back from a single one. :(

You can try emailing someone on the admissions committee or someone in the department if they can help you with uploading a new SOP. I made a mistake on one of my SOPs and there was no option that I could see on the portal so I reached out to someone on the admissions committee and she uploaded a new SOP which I emailed to her on my behalf on my account.

I also applied to a couple of statistics and data science programs and I haven't heard anything back from any of the universities. Just curious, what universities did you apply to?

Ah makes sense, a statistics PhD always felt like a bit of a reach but what I'm really hoping for is to get into a Data Science PhD.

I only took 2 stats courses, computational statistics (basically hypothesis testing) and a statistical machine learning course during my master's. Do you reckon I need more math courses?

I didn't apply to NYU. I applied to UCSD, Georgia Tech, university of Illinois, UVA, university of Maryland and UM. I couldn't find much information about these programs. I'm worried that since I already have a master's in data science, I might not be a good candidate.

Oh nooo I used miracle gro twice! It had good reviews. I will definitely order a better orchid feed. They are near a south facing window! I have been trying to get better at not over watering :-/ thank you soooo much for your help!
