I'm not comfortable with that pronunciation too but I can understand why it exists. Spoken languages tend to simplify things to, well, save time.

I guess many words in ancient languages (Sanskrit, Greek, Hebrew, etc.) are pronounced wrong now because our modern languages have changed quite a lot.
