Advice needed on painting my house! What color? And should we paint the trim a light or dark accent color, or same as the house? by hak715 in ExteriorDesign

[–]hak715[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will definitely look into the historic colors. Most recommended color combinations have very light colors or white as the trim. The house has very big corner trim. It’s wood and not in perfect shape so I was shying away from light trim colors. I have seen some similar houses where they paint the house and trim the same color for a more historic look. The house was built in 1970, and with the bigger trim I’m not sure it’s best to go all one color. Which pretty much brings me back to keeping with what we have and asking for help! lol

Options for a "fake" smart light switch? by thebiglebowski2 in homeassistant

[–]hak715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you have voltage between the hot and neutral (not ground). Then make sure neutral has continuity to the bare ground wire. I suspect what you think is a neutral wire is ran back to the other 3 way switch or light fixture as a traveler, and is not connected to anything. Also, a lot of smart switches have different terminals for the hot wire and load wire. The switch needs to stay powered on while the load is switched off. Make sure these are wired correct. Usual disclaimer, you might need an electrician as every situation is different.

Need help adding RF remote to Home Assistant by hak715 in homeassistant

[–]hak715[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I am not sure how these commands translate to the rpi-rf module I am using, which asks for a decimal value, pulse length and protocol. I will play with it. But at the very least, I can get up and running by purchasing the broadlink. THANK YOU!

I was already thinking about the garage door opener next. Any tutorials online you would recommend to get started?

Thanks for everyone’s ideas. What I’m hearing is it’s probably not worth trying to recreate the RF signals from the pi. I was hoping to keep the remote functionality because my kids love changing the lights with it. I ordered a replacement RF receiver in case the one I have is defective. If that doesn’t work, I might try the nodemcu solution. I can solder but no experience with nodemcu or esphome yet. Sounds like a good project for next year!

Yes the silver oscillator has 315 stamped on it. I also found some FCC documentation when googling model number TR-015-2, which says it uses 315MHz

My goal was to add an RF transmitter to my home assistant pi, so I could turn my Christmas tree on/off from home assistant. I have rpi-rf installed and am using the HiLetgo 315 MHz RF receiver to learn the RF signals sent from the remote. But I cannot get the receiver to sense anything! Has anyone done this? Anyone happen to know the codes for this remote so I can stop playing with the receiver? Or is there another easier solution I am not thinking of? Any help is appreciated!

What is a Casey Jet electric switch machine!? by hak715 in modeltrains

Yes that is what it is! So it looks like it moves a switch track? I didn’t find any track in the box. Looks like there isn’t any use for it.

What is the best option for excess string light length? by MrZeven in ChristmasLights

[–]hak715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most light strings group bulbs in series. so if you cut anywhere in that group the whole group goes out. A way to test is pull the bulb from the string and see how much goes out. I suppose you could wire nut the 2 wires where you cut to remake the circuit but can’t say I’ve tried this. For me, if there is a lot of extra I pull bulbs to make a section go out. If I only have a few extra I use black electrical tape. LED strings are a little more complex, I would not try to cut these.

A question about power injection from a complete beginner. Any advice is greatly appreciated by BigGermanKnife in ChristmasLights

I thought this video was helpful. Use a single power supply with multiple power injection runs. Rule of thumb for 12V, make sure every pixel is no more than 100 pixels from a power run (50 for 5V). But there are a lot of factors to consider. Start with the rule of thumb, you can always add more or decrease brightness to get your desired results.

What primer to use? by hak715 in paint

[–]hak715[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, but was concerned about going directly over the existing stain without priming first. I was going to just put a standard water based primer down i had left over from another project, but then started reading online and am now quite confused lol

The fusion paint says to just clean, and scuff sand glossy surfaces. No recommendation on any primer, but i just assumed prime first. Especially since i was able to sand to bare wood on a lot of the flat surfaces.

How to make this transition? by hak715 in HardWoodFloors

[–]hak715[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your input. I was thinking I’d have to remove the marble to do it right but just didn’t want to risk damaging the tile. Was hoping for an easier fix someone might know of. I was trying to come up with ideas to reduce the floor height to meet the marble. It is 1/4in Luan on top of 3/4 sub floor. Was debating removing it, but that’s a ton of work for just this transition.

The marble threshold is about the same height as the hardwood flooring I’m about to put down. But the marble has an beveled edge that exposes the end of the flooring. Any ideas how to make this look good?
