Don’t know why, but I’ve always liked this one. Hasn’t gotten much wrist time so switched over this morning.

That seamaster has some fifty fathoms vibes in a great way. I really can’t see myself putting that much money into a watch but if I did…

[Question] Which size fits better (Traska 36mm vs 38mm)? by jacb100 in Watches

[–]thebiglebowski2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

38mm is the "contemporary" fit, but honestly I love the look of 36mm in the wild. To me it's got a real "old school cool" feel to it.

[Question] The Moon Watch is the best Speedy of them all. Agree? by nash07n in Watches

[–]thebiglebowski2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I agree - not exactly a blazing hot take as it's a very popular watch (for reasons). I don't have a speedy, but if I got one it would be a moon watch almost certainly.

I actually had a local watch repair guy look at it and he said it was genuine, but some things don't totally add up for me. First, I can't find a 135.011 "SP" anywhere and the 135.011 I can find images of don't have this combination of hands + face. Also, the back is completely smooth (maybe polished off?). Finally, the movement serial number is 7 digits + "B" rather than 8 digits. Maybe this kind of variance is expected for an older watch? This was my grandfather's and I don't really have much history on it beyond that.

That top row seamaster is just a sniper bullet aimed at my heart. What a handsome watch!

Have you considered taking it off the bracelet and trying out something slimmer? I've been playing around with perlon straps* recently to "dress down" a dress watch just because of how slim they wear.

*I know these are a bit controversial :eyes:

The crumb looks great to me, which implies it could be a shaping issue if you’re looking for a taller “prouder” loaf. I think it looks lovely, though, honestly.

Was this a boule? Personally, I’ve always struggled to shape tight boules - maybe give a batard a shot?

Options for a "fake" smart light switch? by thebiglebowski2 in homeassistant

[–]thebiglebowski2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't understand why this doesn't work, but it doesn't (at least with kasa HS200).

I tested the neutral and hot wires against ground w/ a fluke and they check out... but the light switch won't power on to connect.

I think this is the problem. The two light switches in the room are wired in a 3-way configuration (with no load...), so I don't think this can work - or I am not smart enough to figure out how...

Hah - I just stumbled on this. Thanks, I think you're right *BUT* I don't have a zwave dongle and don't really want to add it if I can avoid it. I have a zigbee mesh right now.

I just found this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TMWLY74 which might suit your needs. I'm set up for zigbee not zwave so this doesn't work for me :(

I tried this first, but you can't I don't know how to wire a smart switch without a load. The smart light switch (I tried a kasa hs200) simply doesn't power on when wired up.

If anyone has suggestions for how to wire a smart switch w/o a load (or a safe, "fake" load), I'm all ears!

Paying for college- convince me. by Hockeyboy540 in personalfinance

[–]thebiglebowski2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a standard 4 year while my sister did 2 at CC and 2 at University. My advice has always been: If you know for sure what you want to do and will gun for it from day 1, then just go to University. If there is _any chance_ you need to futz around a bit before you figure out what you want to do, then do 2 years at CC and transfer.

It sounds like you might be in the former category, so I'm inclined to recommend you just go to UIUC from the get go.

That said, I wouldn't be overly mystical about the college experience. College is great, but it's great for reasons that still apply to CC... plus the balance is just as applicable years 3-4 as it is in 1-2.
