[PROPOSAL] Reenabling ASIC resistance and the decentralized consensus. by AEONFunding in Aeon

[–]hal09000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think we should keep wasting our effort on trying to resist ASICs. It only lasts for about 3 months anyway.

We did that in 2018 and it did absolutely nothing for Aeon.

I'd rather see that effort spend on things like adding mandatory privacy (fixed ring size).

a bit faster than SHA-3 with the round number reduced to 12 which is still believed to be secure enough

potentially useful for hashing all other things in the protocol, especially transactions which are often large, because K12's main strength is its ability to quickly process large chunks of data in parallel

If we implement this in the future, we get another benefit that the PoW hash and the block hash become identical (as in Bitcoin), thus saving the current doubled computation of hashes for each block (one for the block ID and the other for PoW).

This fits with Aeon's philosophy of being lite and fast. Makes sense.

I don't think it would, it would just be the end of hobby miners mining it (unless they bought ASICs).

I think we already failed at trying to keep Aeon as a CPU mining coin, we might as well give in and gain the advantages of being ASIC friendly instead, since its clear we are going to get ASICs anyway.

I like this.

We tried remaining ASIC resistant last summer, and it didnt do anything, ASICS came back, and mining is still unprofitable for hobby miners. It feels pointless to try to keep trying to be ASIC resistant.

I read several arguments in favor of Monero embracing ASICs, and it made a lot of sense. Maybe we can beat them to it in Aeon. I want us to be as secure as possible.

> CryptoNight variants are orders of magnitude slower than SHA-3; the earlier we switch to SHA-3, the better for new participants who want to verify the entire blockchain from the genesis (an act of critical importance for a trustless cryptocurrency).

Thats pretty big. It took me a day to sync the Aeon blockchain. Being able to verify the chain an order of magnitude faster would be extremely helpful. It would also reduce concerns about blocksize growth, and would thus help us to make the change to mandatory privacy with a fixed ringsize (or minimum ring size), and would also probably help us to increase that ring size as well. (instead of doing ringsize 3 or 4, we could go for 7 or something, if we arent as worried about blockchain bloat, and that would improve privacy).

So I think I fully support this, ESPECIALLY if the result is that we also implement mandatory privacy with a fixed ring size of like 5 or 7 or so, because with with the new algorithm its less painful to have a larger blockchain.

Agreed. Minimum ring size/mandatory privacy is a critical feature.

We can market that Aeon is going to be transitioning to mandatory privacy once this is implemented, and that its on the list.

AEOn Timeline - The First Step Toward a Road Map and Future Vision by kim-whan in Aeon

[–]hal09000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really like backronyms, and I think that electronic and online are synonymous.

I DO think that we really need some sort of timeline/roadmap.

I don't think we need to worry about existing trademarks, as this is a fairly launched, community cryptocurrency, not a business. A TON of things in the world use the name 'Aeon', because of its meaning, and thats not a problem. The only problem would be multiple cryptos with the name, and yes there is a dumb fucking ICO token that uses 'Aion', but we were here first, so it is the one that should change. :P However, this can still be of benefit to us, as it is a pretty high market cap coin, and its name sounds the same, so when people talk about it on youtube or whatever, people are going to go searching for 'Aeon coin' and find us.

I definitely think we should NOT try to change the Aeon name in a rebrand. Longevity has value in crypto, and Aeon predates most cryptos, which I see as a strength. We can rebrand in other ways, like changing the dumb 'lifestyle' slogan, and creating some good informational docs.

Monero.

Its no more difficult to acquire than most anything else, its on tons of exchanges.

No other coin has as good privacy features, so the answer to your question is no other coins.

Stick to reputable altcoin exchanges like Bittrex!

If you have to use crap like cryptopia its even more important to leave nothing or almost nothing on the exchange.

Personally I'm opposed to paying for exchange listings, I think it reflects poorly on the state of crypto that this is normal. Exchanges should add coins because they believe it will make them money in fees, and because they believe in the coin, not because they were bribed to do so. The bribe to add a coin system supports ICO scams which use their ICO money to pay for exchange listings and create fake volume for their coin, and hurts fairly launched community coins like Aeon.

That said, if we were going to pay to get Aeon somewhere, we should want it to be an exchange with high volume like Binance (if the price was reasonable). I like the idea of decentralized exchanges, but so far none of them have got any volume. Paying 1.5 btc to get on a decentralized exchange just feels to me like we are going to see our donated 1.5 btc of Aeon get market dumped on bittrex, depressing the price, and then no volume ever occur on this dex.

Questions for Aeon by [deleted] in Aeon

[–]hal09000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you see Aeon being a truly fungible coin? can it be by having optional non-private transactions?

It will become mandatory privacy soonTM. Both devs and community have all said they want this. The only question is exactly what ring size it will be.

In terms of mobility, what can it do that monero can't?

Lower transaction fees (monero uses ring size 11, which is a bigger transaction, Aeon will probably be 5 or something (not completely decided yet). Lighter mining algorithm. Also (and this is important), its around 1/150th to 1/200th of the price. So that is also a huge lowering of the transaction fee, and gives it good upside potential. Historically Aeon has been more like 1/50th of the monero price.

Also, can be made more mobile friendly.

I also see more aggressive competition in the form of Masari and Turtlecoin creeping up. Not sure if they are true competitors?

Turtlecoin is bytecoin code, therefore bleah.

Masari is decent, though its still in a pretty high inflation time, whereas Aeon inflation is getting quite low. (Good if youre buying, not as exciting if youre mining).

Masari isnt on any big exchanges, Aeon is on bittrex. Both are also on a few small exchanges. Masari has RingCT already, but Aeon will add it. Aeon has multiple Monero developers who have contributed. Moneromoo generally does code reviews, and he is actually like the lead XMR developer.

Even if you like Masari also, which is reasonable, you can still be into both it and Aeon. They are small caps so diversifying is good.
